for some strange reason maya can’t remember the last time she felt this cold. she ventures a guess to a nameless winter back before they all were trapped within this game, where it snowed from one day to the next without signs of stopping. though, as she continues to walk forward through the snow that wastes no time to bite at her bare skin the deeper she sinks, maya wonders if the memory is false. the sensation of the cold nipping at her lips and the slow, steady feeling of warmth seeping through is enough to hold her concentration. there’s a temptation to remove the blindfold tied tightly to her head in order to view the dungeon before them in all its glory. “cecil, are you okay?” she asks, allowing the curiosity to settle down and remove the fear tapping at the back of her mind. “i didn’t think it’d be this cold when i suggested coming here.” instinctively her footing inches them closer together, stopping before she bumps into cecil despite the familiar sense of electricity that runs through her skin whenever near. despite all the faults the game offered to those unlucky enough to be trapped within it maya was happy that, at least, it kept the feelings she was used to.

It was strange how the game was able to make them feel the freezing temperatures on the terrain they were in. Everything about this game was strange to him. Nothing said immersive and innovative for players than trapping them all in a game with the only way out is letting yourself die. He had no hopes that anyone would beat the game. With all the bosses that kept spawning throughout the world, they were slowly getting picked off one by one. There was no escaping this place and the only option was to pick the way you go out.
But he had a reason to stay here and it was the only reason he was doing any of the god awful things that the game gifted to them to keep them occupied. But his reason suddenly decided they should take on the hardest thing the game had to offer and he wasn’t a huge fan of the decision. And despite his complaints and arguments on the reason why they shouldn’t go there, he didn’t have much of a choice once she had her mind made up.
The cold wind was sweeping through their hair and clothing, causing him to be constantly shivering as they ventured into the dungeon. “I’m fine.” He mumbled and looked to his side towards his friend. As much as he preferred that she didn’t have the blindfold on, he knew that she was used to not being able to see. It didn’t change anything about their situation other than he was more alert. He had already decided long ago that he was there to watch over her. “Are you okay? I don’t think we can get sick but who knows with how fucked up it is.” They could already feel things such as pain and temperatures so he wouldn’t hold it against the developers to make it possible.

everyone had been forced to adapt the moment they were told they’d die if outside intervention tried to free them from their prison. the shock had washed away with time, leaving pieces of its former self behind in all of them; however, maya had always been one to take what life gave her in stride. it was easy to forget that everything before them -- the bitter cold, the way their bodies shivered with every gust of wind -- were all fake. everything had been designed to trick their mind and, if it hadn’t been with her new found ‘gift’ given to her the moment she ventured into the game, maya may have forgotten in times like these. the laugher that stutters out from the boys mumble to her side breaks the consistent stream of warm breath she’d been focused on for so long. guilt twisted in her stomach the second she took a deep breath, nothing the sensation of pain that stung the back of her throat as the air filled her lungs. maya would never need her sight to imagine just how cecil looked in these moments. though, the idea of peaking for a brief moment was tempting. “i promise i’m fine,” she reassures, knowing the other will notice the tone flowing in her words. give it to cecil to still be so selfless despite being trapped in a death game. “plus, i have you to take care of me if i get a cold.” if maya thought about it the idea that players could catch something as simple as a common cold would be possible. they had ended up stuck in a videogame; they could feel the cold stinging at their skin. but, if maya gave into this she knew cecil would run with the idea. “we should go somewhere with snow after this,” maya starts. something different, she thinks. something … positive. “remember when we were kids and we’d play in the snow? we could do that again. i’d love to push you into the snow again.”

It was easy to forget that they were in a dungeon when they talked like this. It was almost like it was an ordinary day where they didn’t have to live in fear of the monster attacks or dwelling on what might happen to them now that they were stuck. He had always been a pessimistic person, deciding long ago to look at the reality of their situation to avoid the disappointment later when it failed. But being with Maya sparked a little hope in him that they might get out of this alive and continue to have these talks like any other time.
While he didn’t believe her when she said she was fine, he left it alone to focus more on looking around them for any monsters. They were still in the beginning of the dungeon but he was expecting to see at least a few mobs run up to greet them. “I wouldn’t really have a choice now would I?” He looked towards Maya with a grimace even though she could not see it. He can’t say he would enjoy being stuck somewhere while Maya suffered from whatever illnesses this place could give them. “I’’m going to take a wild guess and say colds in here are a lot different.” Before he could continue, it was her next words that brought up a small memory of his childhood. His face covered with snow and Maya’s ringing laughter filling his ears. “I heard there’s a town that’s filled with snow. If you want to go, we can spend the day there.” He didn’t mind it at all. It would be a lot better than running around in a dungeon like this. “Don’t push me in the snow however. You already saw that I’m a lot taller and stronger than when I was a kid.” He could feel the familiar feelings of embarrassment rise up in him at the memory of her seeing him for the first time. “I can probably push you this time.”

oddly enough maya felt no fear towards what may lay hidden past their senses. once the doors had closed and the breeze of winter hit them she had understood the size of the area in which they now ventured through various assumptions. given neither of them had run into a wall it had meant they were now somewhere new; unexplored and thriving with creatures born to hunt them down. yet, still mayas only focus lay on the boy at her side and the voice that ran through the dull whistle of the winds. she was alert, however cecil always had a way to pull her attention to him. hearing him take the bait of the sudden topic change maya felt her lips turn to a smile, ever so slightly tilting her head in the direction of the other. the last thing cecil needed to do was worry more over such a trivial thing as a cold; and she knew better than anyone that he would do just that if left to his own thoughts. maya had wanted to agree with the idea of traveling to a town of snow once they left, however as cecil continued the words that left her mouth took importance over something so simple. “i’ll let you have taller, but stronger? i don’t think so.” her confidence beamed in her voice, raised slightly higher as her stride forward took a much bolder approach. she hadn’t pushed the other in snow in many years but she doubted the other would best her in something she very happily took pride in as a child. “but i’d love to see you try.” she begins, only to stop halfway in step before she could continue. “you know what. how about you try to push me down now. i’ll even stand still for you.” turning her body towards cecil, arms casually resting behind her back, maya waited for the sensation of a push. “if you’re able to push me down i’ll call you strong,” she mused, “but only if you can do it.”

Confidence was coming off of her in waves and he wasn’t sure why. While he believed in their abilities to get through this, there was always a chance for them to fuck up in some way...Or for him to fuck up and get them both killed somehow. Someone had to believe that they could do this and if that made her happy, he would keep his comments to himself. So he watched in silence as she strode forward before stopping, turning to face him in challenge. He wasn’t going to push her. He really didn’t want to but he knew he wouldn’t hear the end of it if he didn’t at least try. With a long sigh, he cast his friend a conflicted look before walking forward. His hand raised and slowly reached towards her face, stopping just before it could touch the blindfold that was hiding her eyes from view. It was tempting to lift the piece of cloth just a little so he could peek into one of her eyes, hoping that she would be able to at least see him for a moment and give him more than just ‘taller’. But the cloth was there for a reason and he would not throw away her small comfort just for his own selfish reason. So without a second thought, Cecil’s hand reached upwards and flicked his friend on her forehead, moving it back in the chance she tried to swat him away. “I’ll show you once we get out of this dungeon.” He moved passed Maya with another quick glance and started to move forward again. “Let’s focus on getting you out so you can enjoy getting shoved into the snow later.”

life had taught maya many things and while teachings of patience was something she thought were mastered many years ago it was times like this where those lessons fell apart. the wind brushed her hair against her face and, as she waited for cecil to approach, focused on the light touch of snow against her skin. the cold spread, dissipating as another hit. she wondered how long it would take cecil to finally realize she wasn’t going to move until he took her challenge. despite being in the middle of a dungeon maya wanted to distract the other from his thoughts. she knew going into this place that cecil would worry, far more than he usually would. sight or not, maya could see that same, upset look he had the first time she’d finally seen what cecil looked like. it made her stomach sink just thinking about it. the only heat in this space was cecil. the one sound that captured her attention for longer was cecil. so, as maya stood, feeling the sudden presence of the other inch closer her breathing faltered for a brief second. she braced herself for the sudden pressure that would come from his hands, ignoring the nervous tension that came with the wait. only when cecil finally does something to ease her nerves does maya react, jumping at the small feeling she hadn’t prepared for. her hands covered her forehead, tempted to slap the hand that had flicked her; but the warmth she could feel before was now gone and she knew cecil had moved. “you’re such a baby,” she started, biting back the pout that had began to pull at her lips. his voice came from a ahead and so she followed, hesitantly taking her first step before continuing on. “you just didn’t want to lose to me.” before maya can say anything else to tease cecil as they walked a sharp howl broke through the silence the wind had taken over for some time. it was distant, though as the echo carried on maya wondered if, maybe, there were something close that hadn’t alerted them of its presence. “do you think we’ll run into wolves?”

He didn’t move too far ahead from her, knowing that she felt most comfortable when she could sense something other than the bitter cold of the dungeon. He had noticed the way she walked close to him as they made their way through but he didn’t have any real complaints. It wasn’t like he minded helping her. It was his job, his own personal goal, to help her in any way he could. So he stood and waited for her to join him again, brushing their arms together to show that he was right by her side.
He was at least happy she couldn’t see the pout forming on his face at her teasing, glancing away from her in the small chance she decided to peek from under the blindfold. He already knew she could sense his embarrassment with how quiet he had grown after her teasing. It was the same thing that happened between them. She teased and he took it, not saying anything and simply enjoying the attention. It was a guilty pleasure of his, one secret he was going to keep silent about. She would never let him live it down.
Before they could say anything else, howling came from somewhere further in. He immediately stopped walking, grabbing onto Maya’s arm to stop her as well. “If we do, I can take attack them from afar. I can take their aggro and you can attack while they’re distracted.” He took out his bow and waited to see if the wolves would appear. “Don’t do anything reckless. I can heal you but it won’t be enough to keep you alive if take all the damage.” The last thing he needed was for her to getting hurt so bad he couldn’t fix it.

she knew cecil would be near the second his voice came from ahead and, as she felt the feeling of his arm touch hers, she leaned into it, relishing in the familiarity and warmth for a minute too long. it’s almost frightening how easy she’s caught up in it, startling herself as cecil talks again, answering a question she nearly forgot was asked. she doesn’t realize the other had stopped until his hand grabs her arm, pulling her to a sto that stumbles her steps. her head turned in the direction of his voice, catching the serious tone that followed his words, and for a second maya thought something had happened she had not caught. however, as cecil continued, explaining to her the danger of being hurt above his ability to heal, it’s the words that he’d take the aggression of the monsters rather than her that made her silent. there was a reason why she’d chosen to become a defender, to protect both herself and others during a fight; and, whether cecil liked it or not, he was included. the momentary fear that had triggered in her head had disappeared, fading into irritation at the blatant -- though kind-hearted -- dismissal. if only cecil could see the glare in her eyes. before he could say or move maya took a half step towards cecil, stabbing her fingers into his side, attempting to catch his attention and bring his focus on her. she’d been tempted to shove him into the snow, though figured it’d be too hard of a punishment. maybe. “don’t you dare do that,” she scolded, pointing her finger in his direction. “you’re a utility, not a defender. i’m the defender. i’m your tank, and it’s my job as it to take the damage.” what was cecil even thinking saying that; she wouldn’t be able to heal him if he got hurt -- and dying in this game didn’t mean just respawning a few minutes later. not anymore. “you’re lucky i didn’t push you into the snow,” she said, muttering the words under her breath. “but i’m still tempted, so don’t try me.”

He regretted becoming a utility type class. When they were first picking out their classes, he wanted to do something supportive for Maya, knowing that if the rumors were right, she was going to be able to see everything that the game had to offer. He knew that with her newfound freedom, she would mostly likely want to go headfirst into everything the game had to offer. Being a utility meant that he could would be able to help her and watch over her from the back, making sure her health didn’t fall too low or the monsters wouldn’t be too tough for her to kill. He figured he would be able to switch his class later on to something more attack like so he would be fighting alongside her. But that went down downhill and now he was stuck with barely any attacks and only providing support.
The only saving grace he had was taking aggro from Maya and putting it on himself. Too bad she her class was all about bringing enemies to her which made his job a lot harder to do. He tried to ignore the way she was pointing at him, looking disgruntled as she scolded him about his plan. He knew she was right but that didn’t mean he was happy about it. “Like I told you,” he began and walked a few steps ahead only to see the wolves spawning from down the path. “You can push me in the snow later when I get you out of here alive.” It’s not like he had a death wish. Dying in a shitty game like this was not something he liked the idea of. But Maya’s safety was a lot more important than his and he wouldn’t be able to handle if something happened to her. They could sit and argue about who would take the aggro all day but he knew she would win in the end. Her class was all about taking aggro and pulling enemies closer to her. While they could both use their skills to attract enemies to each of them, her skill would win in the end and there wasn’t a damn thing he could do about it. “Fine.” He grumbled and aimed his bow at the first wolf who was getting a little too close to where they were. “But be careful. I can only do so much.” With careful aim he fired his arrow, hitting the wolf right in its side. It gave a loud yelp and tried to dig the arrow out with its teeth as its health slowly started to fall every few seconds. He turned to look at Maya with a small pout forming, watching her health to make sure it would stay at 100%. “Get out there, go-getter.”

maya was stubborn when it came to matters such as this. cecil knew better, they both knew that, however he was too selfless for his own good. even now the gesture was sweet and, if it had been in any other situation, her words would have been far less upset. but cecil was talking about taking damage from creatures who could actually kill them now, both in this game and real life; and the notion of not having the other in her life made her ill. they had spent years together, inseparable from the start; her family was as much his and vice versa -- it’d affect everyone. yet cecil was always ready to give himself up for her safety and, as kind as that was, she didn’t need his protection … at least not like this. for once maya wanted to be the one protecting cecil. it had been part of the reason for choosing a defender in the first place. she had always been the one others looked after, carefully ensuring her well-being before their own. but in here things were different. there’s a shift that startles her for a moment as cecil moves a few steps away and, as she opens her mouth to say something again -- to fight back at a comment that never comes -- she quiets at the sound of the bow being snapped back. he’d hit something, a wolf from the sound of the yelp that echos off ahead. as she takes a small step forward, sword appearing in her hand, maya stops at cecil's next words. she wonders if he’s looking at her and with that simple thought comes the temptation to see herself but, as her smile widens, she swallows the notion back. “i will!” she cheered, shouting the words louder than necessary. as maya moves forward to get between cecil and the wolves ahead of them she extends her hand, brushing her fingers against the other's arm. “thank you,” she says, her smile softening as she briefly turns her head in cecil's direction. “stay safe.” a breath escapes her lips, the weight of the sword cradled in her grasp; she gets closer to the wolves, the sound of their growls louder, blurring out any else. maya focuses on one, the wolf (she believes) that cecil had shot before. she felt their eyes on her, burning into her skin; and, before they could break their formation to attack, maya dashed forward. her sword changes in her hand, a rapier appearing just before the blade makes contact with the body -- and as she stabs the needle-like sword into it maya retracts it, moving a few steps to the side as she feels the rush of air brush against her of another wolf missed pounce. maya rushes the already injured creature, slashing at it -- gripping her weapon harder with each contact the blade makes -- until she hears the familiar sound of a body falling to the ground, exploding into pixels. she takes a step back, letting the breath held in her lungs out; however, before she can ready herself again another wolf pounces, slamming its body into maya until they both fall to ground. she stabs her rapier into the chest of the wolf until her skin feels the coarse fur brushing against it, pushing upwards to keep the animal from snapping at her face.

It was embarrassing to see her smile like that at him for something so simple. It was even more embarrassing to see her step in between himself and the wolves, taking a protective stance in front of him. It was supposed to be the other way around. He was supposed to be standing there instead, guarding her and stopping anything that comes at her. He hated himself for choosing a class like this but there was nothing he could do now. The only thing he could do was provide support and hope that it would be enough to help her in the end.
But despite all that, seeing her smile at him and be happy as she charged forward to attack was a little worth it. He stood by and watched as she managed to take down one of the wolves with ease, staring in slight awe at the way she handled her class. It was something he still couldn’t get over, even now when she still chose to use the blindfold rather than seeing what was in front of her. It took a lot of skill for someone to pull that off and maya did it with ease. It was just another thing that she did to amaze him each and every day. So caught up in his staring, he didn’t notice the other wolf until it was too late, watching as it jjumped on Maya and slammed her into the ground. It was a heart stopping moment as he watched the wolf’s jaws snap at her as she tried to push him away from her face. “Maya!” He started to run forward to help, panic almost making him forget he had no real attack skills to kill the monster. But as he ran forward, he stopped short at the sight of two more wolves spawning nearby, their growls echoing throughout the cavern. “Hurry up and get that thing off of you or I’ll come over there and wrestle it!” It was what he had been planning to do to it, tackling the wolf off of Maya so she would have the chance to get away. But it wouldn’t turn out as well as he planned and all he would get out of it was either dying or a scolding. So instead he threatened maya, knowing that she knew his protectiveness that sometimes bordered on the lines of recklessness. If she didn’t do it soon, he would do it for her. But right now, he had to stop the other two mobs from coming over to her. With a loud whistle, he called over to the two wolves that were about to make their way over to Maya. There was no way in hell he was going to let them try and get close enough. He wasn’t going to stand there and let her get mauled. Knowing that she would eventually be able to get the wolf off of her, she turned to face the other two wolves who turned their attention to him. “Over here, you fuckers!” Activating his skill, the wolves fully turned and started to run towards him, a small grin appearing on his face “That’s right, come at me!” Drawing the string back, he began to fire arrow after arrow as they continued to run, only slowing them down temporarily in their race to get to him.

something had gone wrong. in the second of the shatter, that enlighten feeling which washed over maya had left her ignorant to the rest of the pack that circled. she fell heavy but slow, crashing to the ground from the weight of the wolf colliding with her body. the snow that fell from the impact scattered on her body, seeping into her skin where they faded into painful bites of cold against her nerves. her confidence had shifted, surfacing panic that ate away her optimism. she pushed harder against the wolf, digging her blade deeper in an attempt to push it away. maya hears her name, a familiar voice that causes her hands to shake as everything hits her at once. she’s being attacked by a wolf. there are more around her; around them. her head turns at the sound of cecil, hearing the panic in his voice that chokes her words back. she hated hearing him sound like that most of all. “cecil,” she starts, quietly saying his name aloud despite knowing he couldn’t hear. maya had to stay confident for both of them. she knew exactly what was going through the others head, and she couldn’t afford to fall into the same pessimism. bringing her legs up maya attempted to shift herself in the snow, pushing her knees against the wolves stomach. its claws cut into her, scraping against her clothes until they found skin, sending a shock of pain that pushed a whine from her lips. in one motion maya shoved the wolf off of her with her legs, kicking it to the ground beside her while retracting the blade from its chest. she swung downward, changing the thin rapier to a greatsword, smashing the heavy sword down against the wolf where it shattered beneath it. she had heard the others taunts, tempting the rest of the wolves that had spawned to him rather than her. “cecil, wait!” she calls, pushing herself up from the ground and turning to face the direction of his voice. there wasn’t anger, only fear, rooting itself in the pit of her stomach until she felt sick. maya needed to get the wolves back to her before they attacked cecil or fell out of range; she needed to protect the other like he always did. her rapier appeared again in her hand and, after a quick, stumbled steps forward, was pointed at where she knew cecil was. the sound of the bow; the heavy breathing of the wolves -- she listened as she waited, charging the sword until it was ready. it was the same sensation as falling, letting go and waiting for the inevitable to hit. the sword came forward, piercing the air before being brought back, taking everything with it. the wolves that had charged forward towards cecil were caught in the force, tossing them backwards towards her. as one slammed into the ground maya brought her arm back, gripping her sword with both hands as she let the weapon change, bringing back the greatsword. in a quick motion maya lifted it, slamming it down on the other wolf. her chest felt heavy as she pushed her weight against the sword, digging the blade deeper into the canine until it’s whines fell to silence. she could hear the other growling, angered. its attention was on her; as it should.

Arrows flew one by one in rapid fire as he attempted to keep them at bay. He wasn’t a close combat class, instead shooting his targets from afar while others took them at close range. Usually his skill was used to gain aggro and have the enemies face him, creating an opening for his party to attack rather than him taking them on himself. He was still low leveled and all of his skills were trash until he could upgrade them to better suit himself and his party. But for now he was stuck, shooting arrow after arrow into the wolves as they charged at him and jumped.
The first wolf leaped at him, the claws and teeth just barely hitting him as he ducked down to avoid the hit. He could briefly hear his name over the snarls coming from the wolves and that small distraction cost him. The last wolf slammed into him, biting heavily into his shoulder as it drove him into the ground. He gave a loud grunt as it twisted its head back and forth, ripping into his armor in an attempt to rip through it. He had never experienced the pain in this game before, only hearing rumors that you do feel something when being attacked. He wasn’t surprised when he heard the news but this was a lot more brutal than what he expected. What happened to all the players who ended up ripped apart by bosses? Did they feel themselves getting eaten and torn apart? “Fucking hell.” The other wolf was starting to come closer and the last thing he wanted to do was get mauled apart by them...and leave Maya alone in this godforsaken world.
He quickly took an arrow and stabbed it into the wolf’s neck, hearing its loud yelp ringing in his ears as it let go and backed off-- only to get swept away in Maya’s attack. He quickly got off the ground and watched as she managed to slam her weapon into one of the wolves, killing it instantly as the other one growled from nearby. The wolf was slowly approaching, cautious now that his pack was gone. He grimaced as he raised his arrow to aim as its attention was turned, firing right into its weakened side from where he previously stabbed it. It let out a loud howl into the air before disappearing into pixels, leaving only the two of them in the area.
Cecil grimaced as he looked at Maya’s health, running towards her as he saw the claw marks slowly healing up as the last of the wolf’s health transferred to her own. He could feel his own pain slowly fading away as his health finally stabilized, a little over half his life left for him to enjoy. “Are you okay?” He finally reached her and pulled her into a tight hug. It was uncommon for him to be the one to initiate contact, always used to Maya clinging to his clothes or arm or pulling him into hugs. But the attack had left him rattled, leaving him to cling to her instead to make sure she was still here and alive. “I’m sorry I couldn’t do much. I could only get them off of you until you had the chance to get up.” He pulled away with his hands still on her shoulders and looked her over. He gave a bitter laugh as he looked at her health which wasn’t the full 100% he left it at. “I couldn’t even heal you properly.”

her hands gripped the hilt of the sword now dug into the snow, steadying herself as she turned, focused on the snarls coming from the last remaining wolf. there was pain still pulsing in her legs from where the claws had dug into her skin, however it was her mind that was the most exhausted. all maya could think of was cecil, just a few feet from her, and the unknown that came along with those few, fleeting seconds where the wolves turned their assault to him. what if he was hurt? she couldn’t heal him like he could her. what if something happened and he ended up worse than before --
maya couldn’t bring herself to finish her remaining thoughts, nor fall further into the worry blurring her concentration. she could hear the creature getting closer -- feeling its presence too close for comfort -- but, before she could find the strength in her to lift the sword a familiar sound rings in her ear. a bow (cecil's bow) snapping back, a pained howl than silence. it’s only maya hears nothing else that she finally lets her breathing steady as well as she can muster. “cecil,” the name came with such ease, taking her back to a place when she was a child, fingers gripping a young boys clothes to keep him close. “cecil …”
it's the sensation of arm circling her, pulling her close against a body that seeps heat into hers and reminds her just how cold she had once been. there’s comfort that causes maya to relax, sinking into the feeling and leaning against cecil as he holds her close. as he away, tone bitter at his attempt to keep her healed, the panic that had been ignored comes up. in a second maya’s reminded that cecil had pulled the attention of the wolves on him -- and those questions that had stranged her before slowly inched their fingers around her throat.
“i’m fine! you healed me, i’m okay. but, what happened back there? you shouldn’t have done that … i could have handled everything. i thought you understood that.” maya starts, voice rising with each word that falls from her tongue. she can hear the panic in her voice, though the fear that cecil wouldn’t understand her tone was still hidden. her hands quickly move upwards to the blindfold tied around her head, shaking as her fingers search for the bow. “you must have gotten hurt. let me see how low your health is. if it’s too low we can stop and go back, we don’t need to do this. i’m sure there’s a way to go back.” there was a hesitance in her actions, an anxiety ridden issue yet to be resolved with her sight; but cecil’s safety was far more important than her personal comfort. it takes but a second to loosen the cloth, feeling the familiar pressure come apart as it began to fall.
