Ever since he had met Maya, he had always felt the urge to protect her.. Everyone thought he was just helping her because of her disability or the fact that her shy personality back then made it hard for her to talk to others. There were a lot of assumptions and rumors that flew around while they were in school and each time one of those stupid assumptions popped up, he was the first one to shut it down. No one knew maya like he did. Everyone held themselves back because no one wanted to be friends with the weird girl at school. No one was drawn to maya’s upbeat personality that countered his pessimism at everything life threw their way. No one saw the way Maya smiled when something exciting happened or the way she made sure he was smiling even though she couldn’t see.
It was because of these reasons that he stuck around, his protectiveness only growing more and more each day until it overshadowed his rationality. He had been the quiet kid in class, getting the top scores and never getting a note home. But as they grew older and more kids started to bully his friend, his quiet kid persona was thrown out the window leaving him with a reputation for being a dangerous asshole. Seeing all the times Maya cried or hid behind him because of their words made it hard for him to hold himself back, wanting nothing more than to shut them up and to leave her alone. It wasn’t until someone had pushed her down the stairs and sent her to the hospital did he finally snap, finding the kid who did it and punching their face in until it bled.
It was the same thing for everyone who harmed her and video game monsters were no different. This time it was a lot more real, knowing that if he didn’t do his job, she would end up dead. This wasn’t bullies or nasty rumors in school. It was a life and death situation and he can’t punch his way out as much as he wants to.
He heard the panic in her voice as she hugged him back, trying to reassure him that he didn’t fail in his job. While her health still looked good to him, he would rather it be at 100%. She was going to be stuck like that until another monster appeared for him to use his skill on...and he wasn’t sure if he wanted one to. He wanted to leave the dungeon already, getting Maya out as quickly as possible so nothing else will harm her. As she rambled to him, he saw her shaky hands slowly reach for the bow that held her blindfold in place. And as the cloth slowly drooped down, Cecil grabbed it and held it in place before she could see.
“I’m fine. I’m still here, aren’t I?” He began and slowly started to tie the cloth back into place. He already knew how she felt about her newly regained sight. The last thing she needed right now was to gain the anxiety back, especially not after what just happened to them. They were both shaken up already and he knew it would be worse once she took a look at his health. “It’s not even that bad so don’t worry about it.” With a quick hands, he tied the blindfold back onto her face and raised his hands to the top of her head. Slowly he pat her hair, hoping to calm her just a little like he did when they were children. “I’m just glad you’re okay. You did well.”

there’s something different with the anxieties that sit heavy in her stomach as her fingers undo the blindfold from her eyes. it’s that constant scare of sight and everything it holds however, as maya's shaking hands finally complete their simple task, she can’t help but truly fear the extent of cecil's injuries. there was no blood. no scars. just a simple, small bar of color that dictated their life span. if cecil had gotten as hurt as she thought -- would they even have the chance to run? the doors had shut tight behind them the moment they entered the floor and from what she heard it seemed they had no intention of opening any time soon.
hands; heat. it’s startling to feel cecil press the blindfold against her, stopping it from falling to the snow and allowing her eyes to see everything. his voice relaxes her, letting her mind focus on the way his hands tie the cloth back in place -- though, as she does, maya wonders what cecil is trying to protect her from the most. the panic that came with her vision or the current state of his health.
from behind she can hear the start of a howl; longer than the ones prior. stronger in tone; commanding even. but all maya wants to do is stay, standing before cecil as his hand pats her head, just barely ruffling her hair as he does. she can feel something burning into her back; the eyes of a predator slowly coming into view from the shadow of trees. “cecil,” she starts, voice soft in an attempt to coax the other into accepting her coming terms. “if i did so well, than let me protect you. stay back, let me take all the damage.”
maya's hand finds cecil's before he can pull it back, taking it in hers. she squeezes it, recalling a memory of when they were kids; of how meek and quiet she used to be, clinging to clothes of a boy so ready to protect her from the world. it was her turn to return the favor.
that is, if cecil complied.
“i’ll be okay. i have you to heal me after all.” she lets go, unwillingly so -- but it’s necessary. whatever is up ahead cannot be allowed anywhere near cecil; so, maya would come to it instead. “i’ll keep you safe.” with that she walks off, quickly; distancing herself from the other as fast as possible before he can stop her.
there’s a weight in her hand as maya brings her sword back, letting the weapon change in her grip before pointing it towards the sounds coming from a few feet away. another wolf -- or something very similar to one from the familiar noises it made -- the alpha, from how heavy its footing seemed as it inched closer.
please, she thought, picturing cecil behind her. two steps forwards. the beast mimics, calling her bluff; and maya clicks her tongue in response. let me do this. without warning she tosses her sword, letting the blade spin towards the wolf -- cutting into its side, stabbing into it as it cries in pain -- before coming back, bringing the angered canine with it. scar drops a foot away and, as it stumbles to its feet, maya's sword finds her hands, lifted upwards, changing back to something heavy, before slamming down on the body below.

It was the howl that startled Cecil enough to take his eyes off of Maya, turning his attention to what was coming up from behind her. From the trees appeared a giant wolf, a lot bigger than the ones they had just fought. It was snarling at them, its wide jaws opening to reveal the sharp teeth with drool dripping down to the ground. It was definitely the boss and as its name and health bar appeared overhead, he knew they were going to be in for a tough battle.
It was the sound of his name that snapped his eyes back to Maya, looking down as she took his hand and squeezed it into hers. He couldn’t stop her. He knew he couldn’t. This was different from all the wolves they had just fought. Scar was stronger and if they weren’t quick enough, they were going to die. “I can’t…” Cecil began and quickly squeezed her hand back, staring down at her. Scar had not moved much, sniffing at them from the distance and seeing how strong they looked. “I can’t let you…” Her hand slowly let go of his, leaving him to reach out to try and take her hand back. It was supposed to be the other way around. Maya wasn’t the one that was supposed to be protecting him. She wasn’t supposed to be the one that would shoulder all the damage. He was supposed to be protecting her.
“Maya wait!” He called after her, stumbling to try and catch up to try and stop her. But she had already started her attack, her sword slicing into Scar’s side. He was left there dumbfounded, unable to really do anything but stare. He didn’t know why Maya had so much confidence in him. He wasn’t reliable nor was he someone trustworthy. But despite all the things he’s failed to do, Maya still put her faith in his abilities. A bitter laugh escaped him as he raised his bow and aimed for Scar, grimacing as he fired the arrow straight into one of its eyes. “I’m pathetic.” He mumbled to himself as Scar howled in pain, and shook its head to try and get the arrow out. Cecil quickly linked Maya to it, watching as the health Scar was losing slowly went into Maya's health bar.
Gluttony with a single strike of their weapon on their target, they place a debuff that continuously drains the health of the enemy over a short period of time. taking the health drained from the target, the cardinal is able to transfer the health to one ally, creating a slow regeneration of health as long as the debuff is on the enemy.

maya had made up her mind the moment the other had placed the blindfold back against her eyes, hiding the current state of his health with fabric and soft words. as cecil’s voice called out to stop her maya fought to push it back and focus on the beast in front of her. she’d succeeded; however that didn’t stop it from hurting.
cecil had always been the one protecting her, from when she was a child till they got older; and, even with their current roles in the game, cecil was still putting her safety first. it was all second nature between them and, for so long, maya had relied on cecil more than she’d like to admit. but, like many others had said, jaded and laced in venom that easily sunk into her skin, her dependence on cecil was a problem. so maya grew to better herself, taking care of her own problems rather than crying for his help.
she wanted to be stronger, to protect cecil as he did for her.
maya stepped back the moment her sword made contact, focused on the pained sounds the alpha cried, only to rise in tone at the impact of the arrow to its eye. it felt strange -- too real -- and for a second she couldn’t help but forget this was all just a game.
her breathing wasn’t even, her grip shaky. the weight shifted in her hands as the sword changed, returning to something simpler. she could hear scar thrash about before her, attempting to loosen the arrow lodged into its head.
another swing of the katana. maya waits for the impact of the blade through skin, however it doesn’t come. instead she feels the tremble and pull of the wolf's teeth biting down on the sword, stopping her swing and stumbling her forward by half a step. its head thrashed until the weapon slipped from maya's hands, and as she attempted to move back from the canine scar took the moment of weakness. putting her arm out to shield herself the wolf lunged forward, sinking its teeth into her forearm.
maya had wanted to stay quiet, swallowing back the pain so cecil wouldn’t have more of a reason to risk his own life. however, as scar dug its teeth into her, maya couldn’t help but scream for a moment, biting it back into a low whine as she stumbled, trying to keep her footing despite the pull.
she winched, steadying herself. “d-don’t!” maya knew cecil would try to come to her; he always did. but she could handle this, ignore the pain and protect him. “don’t you dare come over here,” maya warned, hissing the words through closed teeth.
