Noel was 90% certain that the nauseousness he was feeling wasn’t because of the boat. He had never been on a boat before so he doesn’t know if he has motion sickness. He wasn’t even sure if it would transfer over into the game. There was so much to this game that didn’t know how much of his real body was connected to this virtual one. But what he did know was that he was a nervous wreck. The ship had just left and he was already gripping the railing and leaning over to stare at the waters below. He didn’t bother going to find their rooms yet. Instead, he had stared as the shore slowly left view and they were surrounded by nothing but water. This was the first time they weren’t in the safety of the town. Whatever happened out here was something they were going to have to deal with on their own. He didn’t know what to expect. There was too much going on in the game for him to prepare. Every other day he was seeing some notification about a boss spawning in random areas throughout the world. What if a boss spawned while they were on the ship? There was just one that had attacked the ocean near Hook’s Cove. It wouldn’t be surprising to see another one spawn right next to their ship. “Do you think we can throw up in this game?” He mumbled over to Theo who hadn’t left him alone since they left. He knew the other was worried about him. Theo already knew about his anxiety towards their situation. He felt bad for not being better company on a trip they were supposed to be having fun on. He frowned at the thought of him spoiling their trip because he couldn’t get his fears out of his mind. The least he could do was try to but… “I’m sorry….You can go find the room if you want. I should be fine.”

he wonders about his last moment on a ship. he’d been on the ocean before; theo knows this to be true. the flow of the boat against the waves and the rhythmic motion as it picked up speed all seemed familiar. maybe it was when he was a child. some forgotten adventure with parents too engrossed in their own lives to ensure their son remembers such a thing. or maybe they’d done something to cause his subconscious to forgot.
somewhat stumped by his own thoughts theo leaned his back against the cold metal of the railing, arching it to bring his head back. the glare of the sun forced his eyes to look in another direction as his friend speaks up beside him. it had been amusing to watch noel stumble, clinging to the railing where his feet seemed to plant themselves; refusing to move from the spot his body chose to give up on. there’s guilt in his eyes, knowing that this was far outside of noels comfort; but theo knew he needed to the reward from this little mission. it’d help in the long run with keeping both of them safe.
“aww, sea sick? i can hold your hair back if you need to puke.” he muses, attempting to lighten the mood with some (unnecessary) teasing. it was probably the last thing noel wanted to hear. his lips part to make another comment when noel apologizes, saying that (if he wanted) theo could leave to their rooms. instead of words theo laughed, rolling his eyes before his expression softened. “i’m not going to leave your side until you’re able to stand up without feeling the urge to vomit everywhere.” he says, “and if you’re not able to do that than i guess we’re both going to be stuck right here. at least we get a view.”

It probably wasn’t helping that he was leaning over the railing and staring at the water going by. He knew he should step back and walk around a little to get his mind off of it. Worrying about what’s already happened wasn’t going to change his situation. Instead he had to accept it and move on...as soon as he moved from his spot. Theo was taking it in stride and Noel couldn’t help but feel a tiny bit jealous over it. He lifted his head a little to stare at the other, taking in his relax posture and the his head was tilted back to take in the sun. He felt his eyes linger a little too long at the sight before Theo’s words brought him back to reality. “Shut up.” It was a quick response to his friend’s teasing statement, glaring at him as he finally leaned back up. There was no possible way he could puke since technically he had nothing to throw up. But that didn’t stop the feeling of his stomach rolling as he stared out into the water and saw nothing but blue. As Theo spoke, Noel finally stepped away from the railing to look at his friend, taking comfort that the other didn’t leave even though he told him to. He would have been fine on his own but he always got that familiarity and comfort whenever Theo was around. “I don’t even think I can vomit since all we’ve had is pixels since we got here.” He joked before taking another step back from the railing. “I think I’m okay now. Knowing I can’t exactly vomit all over the floor makes it a little easier.” It was one of the reasons why he hadn’t moved yet. Embarrassing himself in front of the NPCs was not on his to-do list. “I’ve never been on a boat before so I can’t tell if I’m nervous or the game somehow transferred over our physical illnesses….but I doubt that’s a thing.” It was fairly obvious to both of them that Noel was just a nervous wreck but he wasn’t going to admit it. “Anyway,” he quickly changed the subject in the hope that his friend wouldn’t make mention of his anxiety, “have you been on a boat before? Back home?”2/10

it’s funny to think that noel assumed he’d leave his side. the rooms dedicated to players aboard this ship and the npcs that walked the deck didn’t interest him; nor did the idea of going off somewhere on his own while his friend tortured himself over the railing of the ship. this whole adventure had been his idea in the first place, spanned out over time in an attempt to coax the boy into accepting the idea of leaving the safety of the town for a mere trinket. he would have gone on his own but problems would arise with that; and honestly, theo couldn’t find it in himself to believe he’d be able to do it alone.
if he were to die here than at least he’d have noel near by.
“probably a mix of both,” he says, shrugging at the idea. if someone could make a trigger that’d trap them all within a virtual world than he wouldn’t hold it against them to have them add those nice little details to make everyone's lives hell. “but hey, if you want to test it out you can. i won’t judge you if it happens.” the last thing he wanted to do was see noel vomit all over the floor but he’d spent too many countless nights drunk, head in his toilet regretting everything he's ever done to make fun of noel for letting his nerves get the better of him.
however at the question theo quiets, clicking his tongue as the same thoughts from before resurfaced. he hated thinking of his parents in the real world, and even now that held true. his breath comes out slow, laughing a bit as he straightens himself up, back still pressed against the railing and his eyes focused on the floor. “it’s funny, because i think i have but for the life of me i can’t remember.” he says before his tone hints at a bitterness he can’t quite shake. “i probably got forced into some gross dinner party by one of my folks. one of them might have slipped up and said they had a kid, so when they got invited i had to come because that poor sap remembered. they probably hated it ...”
he doesn’t want to make this awkward nor focus on the bad taste that enters his mouth as the final words drip from his tongue. there was no point in dwelling on his parents, nor their horrible skills in raising a child; and he knows noel didn’t mean to bring up this irritation in him. it was all his own doing. “are you … sure you’re feeling okay? looking at the ocean probably isn’t going to help so how about we go walk around for a bit.” he smiles, doing his best to try and ease the moment he’d almost had. pushing himself away from the railing theo extends his hand, offering it to noel. “for balance.” he explains, eyeing his hand to indicate what he was talking about. “i don’t want you bumping into anyone.”

Noel sent Theo a withering look at the suggestion that he should test out whether or not he could vomit. If he didn’t want to vomit back home then why would he want to do it in virtual reality? He knew the other was just teasing but that wasn’t helping him in the slightest. Just the thought of it made him feel worse. But it was his question that caused Theo to suddenly click his tongue causing him to stare in mild confusion. The bitter tone seeped out of his friend’s mouth unknowingly as he talked about his parents. It was a sensitive topic for both of them. He knew about Theo’s parents from the few times he heard the other talk about them. The topic of parents was avoided as much as possible between them. They each had their own reasons for why they didn’t talk about them. Guilt crept up in him for bringing it up even if he didn’t know. Whether or not he knew didn’t matter because he knew just how shitty it felt to think back on the past. Before he can apologize, however, theo interrupts making noel switch the topic with him. He knew the other didn’t want to hear an apology and it was best that they moved on from it. “I’m fine now.” Noel mumbled, the response sounding weak even to him. Theo was right in the sense that looking at the ocean wasn’t helping him the slightest. There was no land to look at and no town to escape to. It was just them and the sea at this point. At the suggestion that they should walk around, Noel stared as Theo held out his hand for him to take. “Yeah right…” He glanced at the hand held out to him before moving back to his friend’s eyes. “You just want an excuse to hold my hand.” Not doing anything for a few seconds, Noel waited to see Theo squirm a little before he took the other’s hand. His grip was firm as he held the other’s hand, tugging him to stand next to him. “Lead the way cause I’m afraid I might bump into all the NPCs here.” He suddenly leaned on Theo, throwing most of his body weight against his side so the other would have to hold him up. “ Guide me because I’m too weak to not see anyone else. I feel so faint. Be my eyes and lead me towards our cabin so I can rest.”
If Theo was going to treat him like he was going to fall over any second then he was going to act like it. 3/10

while not too surprising theo was happy to see the topic of parents be avoided and with it the rather awkward response he had given in regards to such a simple question. he hadn’t meant to reply to noel in such a sharp tone, nor make the other even more uncomfortable than he already was. it was bad enough he had dragged the other out of his comfort zone and out to sea knowing full well of the fears that plagued them both. as theo's eyes glanced to the ground it was noel's voice that brought his attention back, reassuring him with the little comment made towards the reasoning behind his gestured hand. his expression shifted, feigning shock at the accusation being placed on him. “wow, i would never.” theo gasped, doing his best to sound as appalled as possible. he and noel both knew full well that something like that just screamed theo -- and noel wasn’t completely wrong. though, this time around, he had meant it as a gesture of kindness than flirtation. “you know, if i wasn’t such a good person i’d be absolutely offended. but, i am so i forgive you.” the firm grip took theo by surprise, however he quickly took hold of the other, only to pause as the other made a scene. his eyes narrowed slightly, watching as noel leaned his body against him to the point where he had to adjust his weight to keep them both from falling over on the deck. “why do you have to be like this?” theo murmured, keeping his amusement at bay for now. he leans his body against noels, doing his best to keep the boy standing straight while rolling his eyes as the thought of them both slipping and falling to the ground entered his mind. “if you don’t stop it i’ll carry you instead,” theo starts, grinning as the idea pushes away any other thoughts. “you can pretend to be my wife and i’ll bring you to bed so i can take care of you properly.” that should do it.

Noel wasn’t a child and he didn’t like to be treated as one. He couldn’t remember the last time he had been treated like a kid or even spoiled like one. Not too long ago he had been forced into adulthood way sooner than he should have been; and he had to suck it up and deal with it. He didn’t want anyone’s pity for his situation nor anyone’s concern. He didn’t get emotional over his situation nor did he cry about it. Whatever happens, happens and there was no use in crying about it. And so whenever someone showed a little concern, he brushed it off and put on a front, showing confidence that he didn’t even know he had. He didn’t want anyone to feel sorry for him. But Theo was different. He was the only person to show true concern about him, going above and beyond to ensure that he was okay with everything they did. It was easy to let down his fake smile and front, instead letting the other know the insecurities and anxieties hiding underneath. He could let his guard down whenever they were alone because he didn’t have to worry about Theo giving him pity. If there was one person in the entire world who understood him more than anyone else, it was Theo. He brought out everything he had locked away to protect himself; throwing away his childhood personality and replacing it with tough skin. But whenever the other was around, it was easier to fall back into that carefree and fun spirit that he once had. And as he leaned heavily on his friend and laughed at the surprise on his friend’s face, he knew there would be many more times just like this that he would be able to let loose and have fun. “Like what? You have to help me since I'm going to run into everyone.” Noel smiled and continued to lean his full weight against the other. He could feel that Theo was doing his best to keep them both upright. It served him right for making that pathetic excuse in order to hold his hand. But it was the threat that made him pause, causing him to turn and look up as his eyes slowly narrowed in accusation. “You wouldn’t dare.” Theo would; he would pick him up and carry him away as if he weighed nothing all the while laughing at his protests. And he would carry him to their room and… He felt his stomach flip. “And what does that entail?” One of his eyebrows raised in question as he finally stood up on his own and turned to look at the other. “Oh please do explain so I have a reason to throw you off this boat since you insist on calling me your wife….again.” The underlying threat was there and he knew Theo could see clear on his face that if he answered wrong, he was going to stab him. 4/10

as funny as his friend could be, theo couldn’t help but eye the boy leaning against him, silently judging him for the accusation. while the idea of using this as some excuse to hold the other's hand seemed like something theo would do, this time around he had meant it as a much kinder gesture. though, now he was regretting it. maybe that was why he said what he had, knowing full well the extent of his threat and how noel would react to it. they both understood that if noel slipped theo would happily obliged and pick him up as he said; though, the boy wasn’t going to let him get what he wants easily. he feels noels weight leave his side, allowing him to straighten himself properly as he watches noel look in his direction. the question and remark that falls from his lips leave theos smile faltering under the pressure noel so easily places on him. everything about those words were rhetorical yet still demanding some sort of answer. theo understood the meaning behind noels posture, his words -- his threat. say the wrong thing and get in trouble or, if he was smart enough, climb out of the hole he’d already dug for himself. instinctively theo clears his throat, falling to silence before letting out a laugh that’s a little too nervous for his own good. one would think after so long theo would avoid situations like this; or at the least know what words to say to make noel forgive him. “uh, well …” theo starts, trying to quickly fill the silence he’d made for himself to buy some time. “hopefully something you’d like?” he doesn’t mean to question himself, but by the time the words come out it’s far too late to take them back. “you know, if you wanted to pretend you were that weak then it’s only right for me to take care of you. get you things, make sure you’re comfortable,” theo's mind finds a open door and, like always, he runs for it, attempting to explain himself in a way that noel might deem correct. “you wouldn’t need to lift a finger because i’d do everything for you. need something to eat? i’d get it. something to drink? of course.” his voice drops for a moment. he knows he shouldn’t say what came to mind; but like so many times before theo can’t find the ability to bite his words back. “if you need company through the night and someone to sleep with, well … it’d just be rude if i didn’t.”

It was easy to fall into their little game. Theo would say something, and then him, and then Theo again, and then he would get mad and Theo would have to take it back. It was becoming a routine now. He would never stay mad at Theo for too long, immediately caving when the other looked at him with puppy eyes and a genuine smile. As easy as Theo gave into his whims, he was the same way and as Noel stood and watched Theo try to explain what he said, he couldn’t hide the amused smile that appeared on his lips. Theo was cute. “Oh really?” Noel began and shifted his feet back a few steps in order to stare at Theo’s figure. “And who exactly would do the cooking since you have a tendency to burn almost everything? And who was the one who had to clean your unused kitchen and buy you actual food that wasn’t cheap chinese takeout?” He could remember the day he first came to Theo’s apartment and stared at the kitchen that clearly hadn’t been touched in awhile. And he remembers the day Theo hovered over him as he cooked something for the both of them, only to have to shoo him out of his way. It had not been that long ago but he was feeling homesick for their little apartment.
Before he could continue, screams started to fill the air from down below. Suddenly the ship gave a lurch, almost throwing him off his feet if it weren’t for the railing that stopped him from falling. With a tight grip on the railing, Noel looked down into the water and saw dark shadows swimming by before leaping onto the boat. He couldn’t see exactly what they looked like but judging by the terrified screams from the deck below, it was most likely monsters. “Um…” His hold tightened as he watched shadow after shadow jump on the boat and the screams increased. “We’re getting attacked.” Nervousness creeped up on him as he stared at the monsters boarding the ship “I might vomit.”

one would have thought that over the time they’d known each other that theo would have been able to stop himself from falling into the same holes he dug himself day after day. however, whenever he was around noel it happened naturally. there was something about the way noel talked and, simply, how comfortable he felt around him that caused theos words to fall with ease. so much so that the same words and floods of compliments usually came back to haunt him, dragging him down as the other retorted until he was left to stand there, silent and submissive until the next passing comment came to mind. it was the same even now -- and as noel began to speak, listing out just a few of the things he’d done for him, theo was left to stand there, silent and biting at his lip. nothing that was said had been a lie. his tendency to burn food had quickly caused theo to give up any attempts to cook anything complex and outside his range of understanding. for example, anything that required him to use his stove rather than a microwave. “i don’t burn … everything.” theo lied, knowing full well that he was stretching the truth rather thin. “and i helped you clean, so don’t act like i didn’t.” that hadn’t been a complete lie, though he can recall making sexual comments towards noel more than he had cleaned the counters. hopefully noel didn’t remember that. he’s about to plead his case more when he feels the lurch of the shift, his hand finding the railing for balance. it’s the screams that fill the boat that his he hears, drowning out whatever else around them -- yet, despite it all, theos eyes are focused on noel and the nervous pitch in his tone as he talks. “hey,” he starts, pulling his hand away from the railing with more force than he had thought it’d take. there was fear in his eyes for a brief moment, scared of the unknown the monsters brought with them as they came from the depths of the ocean and onto the boat. but as his hands found noel's face, cupping it to bring his focus to him, theo let that fear fall back so the other couldn’t see. “it’s fine. we’re fine… i promise.” there’s a small smile on his face, doing his best to ease the tension he knows is growing inside noel. “we need to go kill those things. it’s just you’re average monsters, no big deal. especially for my virtue, right?” he lets his tone be as playful as possible, glancing back behind noel to make sure they were okay before focusing back on the boy still in his hands. “we got this. it’ll be a piece of cake, than after we’re done i’m going to like a word with you over the very rude things you said to me.” his hands linger against noels cheeks for a moment longer than they should, brushing against them as theo drops his arms back to his side. “you can make it up to me by letting me carry you to the bed, and from there we can figure out something else. you know, details we can talk about while we’re laying there.”

The sight of the monsters jumping onto the ship made his stomach turn, waiting for the perfect moment to bring up all the nice pixels he had scarfed down before they boarded the ship. For once Noel was a little thankful that not everything from the real world transferred over or he would have suffered something as embarrassing as puking because of fear. It was hard not to be fearful of losing your life at a moment’s notice, watching the very moment when death would take you to something dumb like a video game. They were trash mobs, something easy for players to pick off easily but that didn’t mean that one of them would mess up somehow. It only took one time for him to fuck everything up and watch as he, or even worse Theo, disappear in a burst of pixels.
Hands suddenly cup his cheeks and he’s staring up at Theo, eyes wide and fearful from watching the mobs coming on the ship. He didn’t know how freaked out he looked or what he said to make his friend suddenly turn his attention to him but as Theo talked, he could feel himself slowly start to relax the more he went on. It was hard not to stare, taking in the other’s confident expression and teasing remarks underneath his comforting works. It just made him realize how much this game would have been a very different experience for him if Theo had not been there with him. Theo’s words wash over him making him slowly start to relax and not have the urge to vomit on the ship’s deck. And once he finished speaking, brushing his hands against his cheeks as he let go of his face, Noel could feel a hesitant smile appear as he stared up at him.
“You just want an excuse to carry me.” His words echoed back to a few moments ago when Theo offered up a hand for him to hold, Noel teasing him for being so touchy when it came to him. It was always easy to fall into their game and even with the threat of monsters looming closer with each passing second, Noel felt himself relax at the familiarity of it all. “If everything turns out fine,” it will “then i’ll let you...just this once…” He was going to regret his choice later but the thought of curling into a bed right now did sound appealing.
The sound of running footsteps started to come closer, breaking his gaze away from Theo to see what was going on. NPCs were flooding onto the deck and tripping over themselves in an attempt to get away from whatever was chasing them down below. “Um...when they come up, I’ll wait for you to use your skill so I can attack them. We can try to take them out as quickly as possible.” He equipped his weapon and his weapon appeared in his hands, gripping it tightly as he tested its weight. This was their first battle and nerves were hitting him hard. “We’ll keep each other safe.” With his other hand, he raised his fist towards Theo for a fist bump, a grin on his face to show that despite his fears, he was ready to go.

theo understood the fear he saw etched so deeply into noel's expression, or at least he liked to believe he did. he knew the hesitance that came with dangerous situations and hard acceptance that this video game could end either of their lives in an instance. but, just as he did when they had been told they’d be stuck in this game, theo quickly understood his role to protect noel from what triggered his anxiety. over time he had been able to work the other out of his troubles and, gradually, watched as he became more of himself in this strange world. but to survive they had to be stronger, and to do so it meant theo dragging noel out past the safe haven of the towns -- so when that fear struck again theo was ready to bring noel back as best he could. he had the utmost confidence in the other, even if this was their first, official fight. to theo there was nothing noel couldn’t set his mind to -- it just took a small push in the right direction to get the other going. hopefully, he could be that for noel. the smile, while hesitant, was what he needed to see, and theo quickly returned it with a far more confident one of his own. he wanted the other to feel at ease and the false bravado helped trick his mind from worrying about the looming possibility of death on their shoulders. “aww, sweetheart. you’re going to regret that bet.” theo mused, watching the other retrieve their weapon -- ignoring the flutter of excitement as he did the same. it comes to a surprise how little theo has his weapon out, and the presence of the beads around his neck felt odd. tentatively his fingers went out to touch the weapon, tracing against the simple pattern adorned on each one as he listened to noel speak. he’s unable to speak the words that fell onto his tongue, cut off by a loud, animalistic sound. it hid the sound of loud steps, a creature on two legs -- scaled and dripping water -- attempting to follow the fleeing npcs to wherever they hid. it stopped a few feet before them, head tilted in confusion before it raised it arm, pointing its weapon towards them before letting out another screech. instinct was strange. in the same moment the creature had stopped so did theo, eyes watching the odd monster come forth, an echo of however many more of these things hide below sounding off amongst the screams. it was only when the creature pointed its weapon towards them that theos finger lifted, sending one of the beads from his rosary out onto the creature; embedding itself into its body as it screamed. “i’ll target anything else that comes up, so go crazy.” theo starts, hesitating for a moment after the words fall from his tongue. “be safe too. i don’t mind taking care of you, but i’d rather not see my little house wife get hurt.”

Noel knew he was going to regret his choice the moment he said it. The thought of being carried around like he was a child didn’t appeal to him in the slightest. However, if that’s what it took to get them through this in one piece without any trouble then he would suck it up and enjoy the ride. He knew Theo wouldn’t be lax in the way he battled if Noel had said no to the carry; Theo wasn’t that type of person to be petty over something as small as that. However, he was trying his best to get Noel’s spirits up about the coming battle and their game brought a wave of comfort over him. So fuck it, if that’s what Theo wanted then he would do it.
“Don’t call me sweetheart.” It didn’t come out with enough spirit as normal, nerves taking hold as soon as one of the monsters came up to them. It was ugly, scaly, and everything Noel wished he didn’t have to face. His hands tightened on his weapon as he watched the creature stare at them before pointing its weapon in preparation for battle. He didn’t realize that Theo had started the attack until he saw the bead embedd itself within the monster causing it to scream. The shrieks it was making was echoing around the ship and soon there were more calling down from below. If they didn’t take care of this one now then they would have to deal with all of them at once. And Noel didn’t feel very confident taking out one of them.
Theo’s voice stopped him from his self-conscious thoughts and he let the familiar tone and teasing wash over him. It was the name he called him that made him pause, temporarily forgetting about the battle in order to turn to glare at his friend. “Didn’t i tell you not to call me that?” But before he could turn completely, the loud screeching of the creature interrupted his rant as it saw an opening to attack. Noel turned back around quickly, watching as the scaly creature leaped at them with its weapon raised in swing. Everything seemed to slow down for him as he watched the mob come closer and closer. Almost on instinct, he raised his weapon and aimed carefully, finding a point to attack before throwing.
The javelin soared through the air and stuck right in the creature’s abdomen, causing it to lose its momentum and fall to the ground. But before it could hit the deck, Noel appeared seconds later, slamming his feet into its body as he landed from his warp, causing both him and the creature to go sliding across the floor. Noel managed to stand upright on the monster as he used its body as a board to slide along the deck. His grip on his weapon was tight and painful, adrenaline running through him as they finally skidded to a halt. The creature shrieked in pain as it tried one last attempt to get free. However, its health bar soon plummeted to zero and it disappeared in a spray of pixels.
Noel watched in awe as the monster disappeared from his sight, his feet landing on the deck now that nothing was holding him up anymore. “Oh…” He breathed out and took a few steps back, turning around to face Theo once more. “We did it.” A breathless laugh escaped him and his hands were starting to shake from excitement. “We did it!” The fight wasn’t over yet but for a few moments, he would be able to enjoy this small feat with theo.

theo understands that his short comment regarding noel's ‘favorite’ nickname of his being said wasn’t in the least bit needed. however, their game is far too tempting to ignore even in the worst of moments and, during a time like this, face to face with a monster, theo needed that sense of light-hearted familiarity to ease his nerves. his eyes were still trained on the screeching beast in front of them, eyeing it with caution and a fear that, if he chose to look away for too long, it’d all be over for them. however in the periphery of his vision theo notices the motion of the other turn and, despite the haunting thought that scraped its claws through his veins, he couldn’t help but be pulled into noel's presence. despite the danger -- the fear and worry -- he was, and always had been, weak against him. their eyes caught for a second -- turning into a dragged out moment that theo thought wouldn’t end but rather return them to a simpler time just a few minutes ago. that their game would continue, uninterrupted by the creatures causing havoc around them. but the scream came and with it their attention was torn apart. instinct told theo to brace himself; to shove noel behind him to protect the other from what was to come -- but noel never needed protection and this time was no different. from behind all theo could do was watch as noel attacked the creature, and as the fight continued he continued to glance at the others health before back. it was only when the monster's body shattered into pixels against the hard flood of the ship did theo realize he’d stopped breathing, caught in awe at the others victory. his smile matched noels once the other turned around the cheer, and with it theo laughed -- breathless and half-caught in his throat as he pushed his feet off the ground to move towards noel. he could feel noels passive take effect, quickening his pace until he arrived beside noel at a startling speed, ignored by the excitement that ran through his blood from watching the others display of power. his hands found noels, grabbing hold of them by the wrist without warning, pulling the other near him in a small twirl. that smile hadn’t left his lips and, just as before, his eyes couldn’t leave noel even if he tried. “you were amazing!” he started, voice too loud for the situation they were in; but he was far too caught up in their victory to realize. “i don’t think you understand how cool you looked.” there was so much more he wanted to say and, as theo opened his mouth to let loose the flood of compliments hanging from his tongue another screech ripped through the noise around them. his grip loosened, his eyes finally being pulled to the distant shapes of two more creatures making their way clumsily up the stairs to where they stood. before noel could move out of range theo turned again to look at noel, smiling the same, wide smile he had when first running up to him. “let me give you something fun this time,” theo started, grabbing one of the beads around his neck and pulling it from the invisible cord that kept the others together. with it in his grasp theo pressed it against noels javelin, pushing down with little force to ease the bead into the weapon until it was gone. “try this.”

With his eyes trained on Theo, he could feel his smile grow wider than he thought was possible. Ever since they had arrived in the game, he had been too scared to even leave the town, let alone the inn room they shared. It had taken a lot of encouragement from Theo to even get him to do the simple quests around town. And it was because of Theo that they were on the ship in the first place. Noel had been apprehensive and terrified to go anywhere but now… Suddenly, Theo was sprinting towards him and with a wide smile, grabbed him and twirled him around. Noel stumbled over his feet and gripped Theo’s hands in order to stay on his feet, glancing up to meet a smile that almost matched his in fullness. He looked at the wide grin and excitement on theo’s face, feeling his own face start to burn a little at the sight. It had been awhile since he had seen the other beam at him like that and it was leaving him a little starstruck and embarrassed. Theo threw all sorts of compliments at him each and every day but this...seeing him this happy and excited about something he did...it left him a little breathless. “Y-yeah…” He stuttered out and he could feel his cheeks burn once he realized that he had been staring at the other a little too long. “Thanks.”
He turned his attention to what Theo was doing, watching as he took one of the beads from around his neck and pressed it into his javelin. Suddenly flames started to flicker around his weapon as Theo’s skill blessed it with fire damage. “Oh, that’s so cool!” He watches the flames spread around the tip of his weapon and gave it a swing to test it out. “Can you do other ones? You should show me later.” Despite the embarrassment that was clearly shown on his face, Noel couldn’t stop the smile that formed at the sight of what Theo could do. They really were a team.
The monsters were now charging at them and Noel didn’t waste time meeting them head-on. With his weapon raised again, he propelled it forward and slammed it into the closest one, appearing a second after to run it through. The creature shrieked as the added fire damage burned its body. With a loud cry, it burst into a spray of pixels leaving its friend to swing down at Noel. The creature’s spear hit his shoulder causing him to grunt and sprint back a few steps to get out its path. His eyes immediately went to his health, thinking for one heart-stopping moment that the monster would somehow drop his health down to zero. But as soon as they landed on his health bar, he could see the monster barely did any damage to him.
The mob suddenly began to screech and he could hear more creatures coming up the stairs to join it. “Theo!” Noel sprinted back towards his friend and stopped right in front of him. “We should do that one skill! Maybe we can take them out in one attack! Let’s try it!” The thrill of the fight was getting to him, making him jumpy and excited to test out what the couldn’t do until now.
