the moment skadi heard there was a serial killer, she no longer cared if it wasn't real. this one wasn't the same as the others, when she raced off and gave notice to anya that she was going to end the monster. if the slayer wanted to join her and meet her at the location, she could. if she wanted to invite anyone else as backup, that was fine. this wasn't something to be drawn out, and skadi wasn't here to learn anything new.
it was unlikely the portrayal would be accurate to any profile she had been forced to study, likely hyped for extra horrific effect. skadi didn't care. everyone knew the game was trying to kill them all; there was no need to be so literal about it. it got under her skin, made her angry in a silent way that waited for a chance to strike.
Her kitsune took quiet steps through the darkroot hollow, frost climbing up through the roots where the fox took her steps. skadi didn't care about being subtle; the monster was free to attack her on sight. she was ready for a fight, and the sooner it came, the better.

[attr="class","bang"] [attr="class","bangimg"] [attr="class","bangtext"]Anya had never been so nervous in her entire fucking life. At least, not that she could recall. Her heart was now overworking itself as the thoughts jumbled. "That fucking idiot," Anya cursed under her breath as Sasha ran at full speed leaving behind wisps of flames with each step. "Mush," she commanded in a growl. She wasn't happy, she just wasn't. If it was any other bounty -- fine, she could have continued her day like any other. Not this one, no. Skadi was heading straight towards a fucking serial killer known to be so brutal with his methods that those who survived were said to never be the same again.
Fucking idiot, fucking idiot, fucking idiot!
Her thoughts chanted the phrase over and over again to keep the 'worse-case scenarios' out of her mind. God, this woman was going to be the death of her. "Skadi!" Anya shouted out as her mount lept past a clearing of trees and onto damp grass just outside of an old house. One that was modeled after generic haunted houses in horror films. It made her heart sink upon looking at it. "Skadi?!" Anya was frantic and a mess almost tempted to barge into the house herself to look for the defender. She hesitated as a cool chill washed over her from behind.

Skadi heard her name called, and her heart skipped a beat. She frowned, ushering the kitsune to quicken in its steps, cursing under her breath. Of course she was worried, with the way Anya was yelling. It was anything but subtle, and she was more than aware that the AI of the enemies here was more than what she had come to assume in games. The fox leaped and bound over branches and roots, nearly stumbling and losing footing at least once, but she forced it to keep going. How Anya had gotten ahead of herself, she wasn't sure. Where Skadi had taken care to be aware of her surroundings, the other woman must have been charging in thoughtlessly. Why? Even as the question echoed in her mind, she knew.
She had made a mistake.
She came to an abrupt halt the moment the clearing and the woman came into view, trying to recover her breathing before she was seen as she allowed the kitsune to slow to a pace it preferred. The moment Anya was in her sights again, she was safe. The woman frowned as she looked at her, doing her best to compartmentalize the mixed feelings that swarmed in her chest. There was a battle coming up. "If you keep yelling like that, maybe he'll come to us instead." She dismounted, eyeing the house as she equipped her enforcer and then glancing at Anya. "Are you alright?"

[attr="class","bang"] [attr="class","bangimg"] [attr="class","bangtext"]It felt like Anya's heart had stopped for a second when she heard Skadi's voice as she came in on her kitsune. Her mouth suddenly felt dry when the woman spoke. Anya shut her mouth, nodding hard that she understood that it was stupid, but it had worked. Skadi was here and in one piece. It was strange. Her fists were shaking in anger but her heart felt at ease knowing that Skadi looked to be fine and had just arrived to meet up with her. Dismounting from Sasha, she approached her guild leader with a glare even if the rest of her face softened.
"I'm fine. What the fuck were you thinking? You were going to do this alone? What if I was too busy to come then what?" Anya couldn't stop the questions; she wanted answers. She wanted an answer on what had driven Skadi to do something that even she could see was risky. "Why are you doing this?" Anya crossed her arms, eyebrow quirked at her. Sure, from an outsider's point of view it was normal to go and do a bounty when one shows up, but she knew better. Something felt off this time around.
"You and I both know this guy is bad news." She let that hang in the air, motioning with her head for the defender to follow her. They were there and she didn't come to stop Skadi from going. She was there to support her with whatever it was she wanted to accomplish even if it meant endangering herself in the process. Skadi blinked as Anya turned to her with a glare, but there was something mixed in with the woman's anger. For some reason, she didn't expect to get punched, but even the volley of questions didn't seem like anything she'd expect from a guild member. Then again, Anya had always been separate from the rest, by her side from the beginning of Regalia. At times, she felt as though Anya was more committed to her than the cause of the guild itself, although she had never voiced these suspicions. She was terrible enough with people to acknowledge that she might be wrong.
At first, she was quiet, no room to get a word in edgewise with one question after the other from the woman. Why are you doing this?" Left Skadi grappling with the fact that she needed to verbalize something that she wasn't sure she would. When Anya stated that they both knew the bounty was bad news, Skadi nodded. "That's why." She said without missing a beat, even if it wouldn't make sense to the other woman.
Anya wasn't trying to stop her, and that was something she was grateful for. She didn't have to remind herself that the slayer wasn't like the rest; while whatever the game had in store for them in the house was guaranteed to be gruesome, when it came down to the actual fight Skadi trusted Anya to be able to hold her own. She folded her arms as she stepped forward, eyeing the front door and the windows. A cellar door would be convenient, but also land them straight in the worst of the horror unless those behind the quest were original.
Anya had asked for an explanation. "Most of the people in this game haven't dealt with this sort of thing." The words tumbled out, and she shook her head. "It's different than whether or not they can handle the battle itself." She knew it sounded stupid, knew that it would be different, but she hadn't been able to talk herself out of this. She didn't expect Anya to change her mind, especially now that they were there. She didn't move to meet the woman's eye, her own pair set on the house itself. The front door probably held some kind of traps, she had decided. If the bounty hadn't bothered to put up a front of normalcy, he'd be expecting aggressive visitors. "We can't go through the front door." She announced, her veneer of calm uninterrupted. "Not without a way to test it, first."

[attr="class","bang"] [attr="class","bangimg"] [attr="class","bangtext"]She wasn't going to argue nor question the woman's motivations now that she had gotten an answer. That was all she needed and she stayed quiet for the rest of it. There was no way to brush off the feeling that this just came naturally to Skadi. Anya knew what she was outside of this world and somehow, it felt to overlap now. As distracted as she was by the thoughts, she didn't let it hold her back from properly scoping out the place. What Skadi said made sense to her, but also, didn't feel right. It was a gut feeling and as her father had told her -- trust it.
Anya moved a few steps back from the door, not waiting to announce her intentions. A strong side-kick was all that was needed to send the old door flying off it's hinges. It kicked up a large cloud of dust, causing her to cough, bringing the back of her hand close to her mouth. With the other, she waved it away to clear it quicker. From what she could see, it was a regular old house with a staircase sitting directly in front of them and to the side of it, the living room. Well, alright.
The Slayer shrugged, waltzing herself in with some caution, head peeking into the barely furnished living room. It was far from warm nor comfortable from a glance. A fire place, wooden planks, and an old rocking chair was what she saw with an entrance to the kitchen. She stood next to the staircase, leaning against the smooth railing. Not a sound; it was eerie.
"Right, so I forgot to tell you that I volunteered to test it. Also, you have experience with serial killer cases and what not? Don't tell me you were a paper pusher until this promotion thing," she spoke casually. Skadi had just forgotten why she had started off on her own for this when Anya did exactly what she had just said not to do. Skadi stared with wide blue eyes, frozen for a moment while she waited for the floor to drop out from underneath Anya or a net to fall down, any other way to immobilize her and render her helpless and waiting. None of it came, but the woman still stood for a moment longer, frozen with her own fury.
The moment Anya went inside out of her line of sight, she broke into action, following her up the stairs even as a voice in the back of her mind screamed at her not to. Immediately as she walked in, she glanced over her shoulder both sides, just in case. Nothing. She looked up the stairway as far as she could see, nothing out of the ordinary aside from a resounding notice of, 'only one exit.'
"That was reckless." She responded absently, her mind alert on keeping her focus on their surroundings. They could not afford to be caught by surprise, no matter how leisurely Anya wanted to lean against the stairway. She didn't want to answer the question Anya had asked so casually, her eyes on the details of the house. She didn't see a stairway down like she had expected. Perhaps the upstairs was the only path available. "Personally, one." She said, finally, "Plenty of murderers, though."
After looking into the kitchen and realizing there was nothing she wanted to find in the fridge, no reason to pay attention to the evidence on that lavel, she turned back towards the stairs. "If we go up, our way back might be blocked. Or we might be doing the same to him. Are you ready?" She asked, looking at her. She stood at the foot of the stairs, with little room for Anya herself to pass on by. If the slayer agreed to do this, then she would lead the way.
Just in case.

[attr="class","bang"] [attr="class","bangimg"] [attr="class","bangtext"]Anya laughed at Skadi's hesitation finding it...endearing. "Live a little, hun," Anya called out, a finger curling to coax her partner inside. She waited patiently as the woman did her own assessment of the place before returning to her with a small comment. Anya nodded, "yeah, it was." Was she proud? A little. It brought her back to her rebellious days where she would frequently break into abandoned private homes just to drink with friends. This was just slightly different, she mused, jumping over the railing with ease.
She flashed a mischievous smile at Skadi after learning of the woman's past accomplishments. Anya purred, "impressive, sergeant." There was just something cute about the woman's behavior today. It was her first time seeing the woman so serious and grounded over a bounty compared to her usual impatience to fight. It put her into a playful mood despite the fact that they were inside a murderer's home.
Anya brushed a finger against Skadi's arm, her eye half-lidded at the woman as her lips pulled back into a charming smile. She chuckled briefly at Skadi's expression. Her lips parted to speak in a smooth husk, "you must be popular, sergeant." She broke away after that, returning back to the issue at hand, shrugging at the question. She gave it some thought, weighing between the logical option and the one that sounded more...adventurous.
"Maybe we should check the kitchen first, you know, typical horror flicks like to put these guys in the basements of their mother's homes, right?" Anya laughed softly as she led the way through the living room over to the kitchen she had thought she saw. She had only stepped in past the door way before her nose crinkled up at the disgusting stench. The place was a mess.
"Gross, it's a fucking pigsty." She walked carefully through the kitchen, turning away from the sink with piles upon piles of unwashed dishes. It was way too real and smelled just as awful. "Fuck!" The sounds of scurrying mice had nearly given her a heart attack as they ran right past her. Aside from the sink, the kitchen table was covered with a generic cloth with obvious blood stains. Nice. The Slayer shook her head, pointing at an obvious unopened door that looked so unassuming that it was most likely where the boss dwelled. "Not creative, are they?" The Vanadis stared blankly when Anya purred compliments at her, her heart beating faster. She wasn't certain what to think or say of the rush of feelings that were tempered with her current caution. They - no, she - had a job to do. This wasn't the time, and yet ... since when had Anya actually flirted with her? It made Skadi wonder, distracted just long enough to consider that maybe Anya had realized-
It didn't matter. Not now.
Skadi had been ready to go up the stairs and let the bounty come and find her, but no, Anya actually wanted to investigate the kitchen of a cannibal serial killer. The woman closed her eyes for a moment, processing this information, but Anya was already moving and so she wheeled around on her heel and turned back to trail after her into the kitchen. It was a small relief that the developers weren't as over the top as she had been expecting - at least, not yet. She still made a point of not looking in the direction of the battered, old looking fridge. She didn't want to give Anya any ideas.
Her head jerked when Anya shouted, sidestepping the rats. Her nerves were already starting to jump; the absence of the murderer was worse than if they had just run into him already. When Anya motioned to the door, Skadi let out a long sigh and swept through the air with enforcer, grip on the shield tightening. "No," She answered flatly. She didn't announce that she was going first, simply doing so and forcing the door open. It creaked, a yawning of the wood that grated against her nerves, and Skadi stared down at the pitch blackness that lay beyond a few steps.
Of course.
She glanced at the light switch just inside, the back of her hand hovering before it. It would announce her presence, she thought, but then she realized that they already had, if not for the simple weight of their steps on the main floor than by Anya. She thwacked the back of her wrist against the switch, waiting as the lights flickered, one every couple of steps above the stairwell on the way down. They were dim, and they continued to flicker, but they wouldn't be fighting in the dark. Skadi took one last moment, before she began to walk down the steps in a measured way, eyes up ahead and quiet.
The moment she stepped down at the bottom of the stairs, she turned her head to see the grotesque display of carved bodies, some splayed across a table, some hanging from fishhooks that had no place in the architecture. None of them were players; decorations, for the sake of being grotesque. They weren't real, Skadi told herself, and yet her anger still flared as her expression and eyes hardened.
She stepped forward without checking her flank, and barely raised her shield in time to block the attack from her blindside. The bounty had been waiting just behind the wall between the room and the staircase, and Skadi growled as her eyes narrowed at the monster in front of her, chains wrapping around her shield with a clang.

[attr="class","bang"] [attr="class","bangimg"] [attr="class","bangtext"]Anya didn't protest when Skadi had finally taken the lead like her usual self. The door opened easily, revealing a dark basement as she had guessed. Man, she was on a roll. She waited patiently for Skadi to start walking downwards after flicking on the light that had that old horror feel. It was a nice touch, she thought, looking at the old light bulbs hanging on the walls in a mismatched way. Creepy. To add to the experience, their footsteps creaked loud and clearly as they carefully descended. Admittedly, she had gotten distracted by the small details in the graphics, touching at the weathered wall with lines of scratches in them. It was so realistic.
By the time she had turned her attention back to the defender, she was already engaged in combat with the murderer. Not wanting to waste any more time straggling behind, Anya jumped past the last few steps. Splish? The Slayer glanced down at where she landed, horrified that her face was reflected in a pool of blood under her. Even with the lights not being in the best condition, she was able to make out the rest of the room. It told of a gruesome story that had somehow gotten to her. It wasn't real and she knew that yet, she felt herself freeze in place. There was so much to take in.
Did Skadi deal with this in the past?
Anya swallowed hard almost feeling herself gag from the overwhelming smell of iron in the air. Her eye followed where the bounty had continued hammering away at Skadi's shield. The chains dragged along as he moved and the expression on his face made her nauseous just thinking about how he had genuinely enjoyed torturing his victims. There wasn't a doubt in her mind that he had tortured players to death in the past. Anya unsheathed her sword, holding it with both hands to get a grip on herself.
It wasn't fear, it was something else.
It was the realization that she had come face to face with something that she could actually label as 'evil'. Evil had to be destroyed, right? Anya let out a yell, slashing the bounty from behind to at least get it the fuck away from Skadi. "Hey, you have the worst job ever." Anya laughed shakily as the large body turned towards her with eyes blank of any emotion. That, that was frightening. For a long moment, there was nothing in the world except for Skadi and this bounty that looked her straight in the eye as he pulled back on the chain, her arm aching as she was jerked forward and towards him. And then it was him who was pushed instead of pulling, moved with the force Anya spent, and Skadi snapped back into reality from the blinders she had put on. She wasn't alone. She barely heard Anya's quip, let alone registered it.
Just as quickly, the butcher had turned his attention to Anya, and Skadi screamed and rushed forward, her index finger twitching over the grasp of her shield. A pulse left her body, coating the ground in invisible ice and pushing the butcher away from the attacker, yanking his attention towards the defender in a nonverbal taunt. The Vanadis did not let him be the one to close the gap she had created, lunging forward with the tip of her shield first. She did not care when she hit armor he had melded into his own body, not pausing to swipe at him again even when she met the sickle he had implanted to replace his own hand.
All she cared about was making sure he died before he could touch Anya.
At point blank range, she finally just pointed the tip of the shield towards his face and issued a hailstone rain, icicles piercing directly into his body. Some shattered immediately upon hitting armored plate embedded into his skin, but enough didn't. Enough sank true, obviously causing the man pain he preferred to be on the other side of, and Skadi didn't even wince when he lashed out, sickle sinking into her leg until a moment after he'd done it. She didn't stop, lashing out again with her enforcer instead. It hurt, but she knew immediately that he'd missed any important blood vessels.
Probably on purpose, she thought grimly.

[attr="class","bang"] [attr="class","bangimg"] [attr="class","bangtext"]Anya let out a breath, her concentration was at it's peak now that she was aware she was facing something bigger than the both of them. She was beginning to understand why Skadi was so determined to put an end to Grimace's sick games. It wasn't just about her or the players of Gargantua. With a swipe, Anya took a defensive stance going back to using her sword one-handed as intended. She had expected the butcher to come right at her with every intent to kill her. Instead, he hovered over her like the reaper as his aggro had switched back to Skadi after her screaming had pierced through the eerie silence. There they were again, in a dark dance where only one of them would make it out alive.
Skadi had a better hold on the situation now without Anya's aid. The Vanadis had Grimace in the palm of her hand until he had taken his sickle to her leg. Anya felt herself stir with rage, her teeth clenching at the bounty toying with her. He didn't try to kill Skadi; he was just playing with her. She didn't like the feeling that was beginning to envelope her entire being. It had happened only once before in the past. There was no difference between her and the butcher now that she couldn't control herself.
"I'll fucking kill you!" Anya snarled, chopping down on the hand that held the sickle. Through bone and flesh, Anya could feel it all as her sword's edge cut through with ease. The hand that had held the weapon soon disappeared into pixels sending Grimace into a howling fit. Shame. "Eye for an eye," she said quietly, shoving her sword through the murderer's leg to bring him down on one knee.

Skadi had thought she had heard Anya angry before, but it had never been anything like the tone that had cut right through the officer's concentration, pulling her back into reality and drawing her gaze from Grimace to the woman. Just as quickly as she had glanced towards the slayer, her eyes were left to follow the sword that cut through the butcher's arm, and then into his leg. She had gotten into a frenzy before, but it had never been anything like this. Skadi felt, deep in her bones, that something was wrong. She couldn't place what, not exactly, just that she needed to fix it.
She needed to be the one to finish this.
The moment the butcher fell to one knee before her, Skadi reached with her free hand to force the man's head back, drawing her shield before his neck in a quick motion. Just as quickly, she'd pulled his head forward as she slid the blade across his throat, limiting the resistance. Pixels gushed around the edge of her shield, but Skadi did not laugh or smile. Her expression was just as grim as she had been the entire bounty, drawing quiet even as the bounty began to disappear.
She wasted no time to dwell on the empty victory. Instead, her eyes turned to the woman who had joined her in this, perhaps unwittingly. "Anya," was the only word that choked out of her at first, the woman not quite back to any sense of normalcy. Perhaps she wouldn't be, not yet. "We should leave," She acknowledged, voice hollow, but she didn't move.

[attr="class","bang"] [attr="class","bangimg"] [attr="class","bangtext"]Anya felt her eyes glazed over at the victory that left a hollow feeling in her chest. She didn't like this; it wasn't a victory. Anya nodded once, letting her head hang down as she retrieved her sword, sliding it back into place. The way Skadi called her name had put her into a better spot than it would have otherwise left her. She was the first one to leave the basement, not looking back once at the room and it's grisly features. It felt heavy to think about and so, she didn't. By the time she was outside, she could feel the awful weight lift off of her just enough to talk with her partner again.
"How's your leg?" she asked absently, looking away. Man, she needed a drink or a smoke. "You know, I've been through hell and back with you." Anya paused, glancing up. "What's your name? Your real name." Would it make her feel better somehow? She didn't know and honestly couldn't reason why now out of all the other times. "Nothing wrong with wanting to know more about your partner, right? You ever have one?" Somehow, she felt like she knew the answer to that one. Even in the basement it felt like she wasn't needed and that Skadi looked to be better of handling the situation alone. Of course, she couldn't let that slide. it was better that she had taken the killing blow, skadi told herself. there had been something raw back there, that she knew, and yet for once, she wasn't entirely certain. she took a step backward as anya began to move, but was still for a moment or so longer than when anya began to climb the stairs. still, she broke out of her trance enough to follow. there was nothing left here. it would be best to file it away somewhere she didn't have to deal with it until later and move on.
she had to.
even in a place as grim as darkroot hollow, it was easier to breathe once outside. the battle was over, the deed was done, and skadi was more aware than she would have liked to be of just how poorly it might have gone for her alone. she hadn't been thinking, and she knew it. when anya spoke, it broke her from her thoughts, and she looked at the slayer whose life she had put in just as much risk. she wasn't sure if she was supposed to feel guilty for having invited the woman, but she wasn't.
she looked blearily at the woman for a moment before she registered that she was genuinely being asked about her wellbeing. "i'll be okay. the out of combat regen has already started." she answered, coming a little bit closer to the present when anya asked her for her name. she owed her so much more than that, and the answer came easily, "saskia." she was quiet for a moment, stepping further from the house as if the action itself would distance her mentally, turning towards anya fully. "I did, once. not since my promotion." she answered, honestly. "i consider us partners. if you want to know anything, you can ask." she allowed, waiting. it seemed as though there was something bubbling under the surface for anya, perhaps more questions. she wasn't good enough with people, even with anya, to know for certain.
