At least, that's what Skadi told herself while she waited at the edge of the clearing, watching the bounty from afar instead of charging in on her own. She was itching to start the fight, cooling her heels reviving a feeling akin to sandpaper caught just under her skin. As much as she would like to take the undead knight on all on her own, she knew better. She needed a reliable teammate to either keep her alive for it or do enough damage that she could outlast it. Primarily because she wasn't sure her abilities would work on it aside from damaging it. Without her ability to slow or freeze an enemy, she was just like any other defender. Perhaps a bit chillier to be around, which wasn't a bad thing in the summer. Checking the LFG tool, she narrowed her eyes. Could the numbers have been thinned so quickly? She reached for her rapier with a sigh. There was no point in waiting any longer. She'd have to handle this herself. She'd recognize this woman anywhere; a defender that she once encountered in a raid. The both of them almost died together in the least romantic way possible. Shit wasn't even tragic -- it was stupid. Now were they going to go do it all over again? She hoped not.
The Slayer sighed, pulling up her personal menu to navigate over to the LFG tool. She sent Skadi her request to join the party. At least, if they were in a party together the benefits may help their survivability. She had been in the background, carefully watching the others take a swing at the bounty listed boss. Not that she didn't want to join in herself just-- disliked competition over one monster. If anything, she heavily preferred smaller parties over large ones found in raids. It was hard enough to keep track of the creature's movement, but to keep track of where her teammates were on top of getting out of the way, it was a bit too much.
"If you'll have me in your exclusive party, you should do it now so we can get down there. Looks like he's about to wipe out the rest of them." Anya frowned at scene unfolding into a massacre of players. One swing of the monster's sword and they were sliced in half through armor, shield, and flesh. Brutal. She was silent, assuming any protest would be met with suspicion. The accusation did grate on her nerves, however. Skadi never went halfway with anything in her life. She followed her gaze to the party that was getting torn apart, unflinching. There was no way to save them, so she compartmentalized. Not everyone was going to survive this. That was just the way it had been from the beginning. If anything, Otohime had just proven that more obviously for anyone who might have been willfully ignorant in the face of the reality. She accepted the woman's party invite, glancing over the name before trailing down the field. There was no way to reach them in time. The remaining player reached for her for help, and she didn't blink. "Run, if you can." Her voice had been steady, her attention elsewhere. They began to at least try to escape. Skadi's eyes were already locked onto the monster before her, weapon withdrawn as she noticed that they had dented the knight's health bar. It wasn't everything, but it was something. She wasted no further time, finally unsheathing the rapier to sidestep the monster's swing and attempt to draw its attention. Whether or not his attack had hit the fleeing survivor or not, she did not know. She would not ask later. She had expected some complaints and was pleasantly surprised that they were absent. This Skadi woman was more docile than she had taken her for. Anya mused at the thought finding it to be rather cute in a way. She chuckled when the Vanadis had taken charge already. By the time Anya was done with her small stretch, her party leader had positioned herself in front of the boss. Talk about being fashionably late to the party.
It didn't take long for Anya to make her way over to her and was just in time to meet the last survivor of the previous party. The pitiful warrior wobbled away sniveling, unaware that he may meet the same fate as his mates. It didn't take a second thought for her to grab hold of the front of the boy's armor, tossing him behind her. The swing was powerful, but did not travel as quickly as she thought. Anya hummed, approaching Skadi with a curved smile, tongue clicking.
"Tsk, tsk. That was cold of you," she commented with a light laugh, "I guess you did learn a thing or two since that last raid, huh?" Anya grinned at the reference. "So, how about we actually work together this time? Plans? I guess it also goes without saying that I'm not going to be the one to save your ass again."

Perhaps she was lonely, clawing for any reaction. She did not look at the woman, did not let her know how unlike her that moment in the raid had been. She was focused on this knight before her, studying him for a pattern to latch onto and use to her own advantage. It was unlikely she would have to come across the same creature again, and yet she would not make the same mistake of underestimating this opponent. Not again. She sidestepped again, lunging to damage the monster once more with razor-edged focus. It was the last comment that broke such attention. "If you do, I'll finish you off myself." She snapped, summoning glacial teeth up all around her when the beast made the mistake of trying to close the distance, driving the icicle straight up the knight's leg. Her sour expression lifted upwards in a smile, her eyes brightening with a certain light. It was unfortunate that she suspected the undead felt no pain. Anya didn't react to the woman's threat only grinning even wider. She approved of this player's attitude. Frankly, it had shut her up and kept her focused on the mission at hand. Anya nodded slowly, at least confirming that she understood Skadi loud and clear. Like Skadi, Anya dodged the swing easily; unimpressed by the sluggish knight. It would have been strange to someone who was familiar with games. To Anya, she assumed the knight was fairly weak and the players who attempted to slay him were awful. Their loss, she thought half-distractedly.
Skadi's short and sweet challenge was something that she couldn't ignore. Pull her weight in damage? Oh, honey. Anya took advantage of the small opening that the woman had practically gifted her. It was a step-in followed by smash straight into the knight's side. The twist of her body only added to the destructive nature of the punch, giving her more power to drive it into the creature's side. Just for safety's sake, Anya quickly jumped back after she had gotten the hit in, carefully watching the knight's health bar.

Very, very hard. She had no intention, then, of being hit more than she had to be. Given the attitude of the woman next to her, however, she had no interest in giving that much away. The bravado would probably do the attacker good - just as long as she didn't dive in front of that massive sword. "Not bad." She said, disappointment lacing through her words as she watched the knight's health bar go down for the same amount of damage the other party had managed in all their efforts. She hit harder than any of them did, which was technically good. Glancing at the creature's hefty health bar, it still looked like it might be a long fight. Her lips pulled back into a grin. "Keep going."The knight was slowed by her successful hamstring, chill still wrapped around his leg after the icicles had faded. There was something exhilarating about seeing a monster so fearsome weakened so easily. And by its own mistake, too. The woman was forced to chip away at the health bar herself, a swipe here and there to keep its attention. It was sad, really. Every stab meant that the creature wouldn't last quite as long. It was when he finally landed a hit on her, and a graze at that, that she jolted back with a snarl. Her strong defense and health pool meant it didn't chip away on her as much as it might have on Seneca, and yet it wasn't anything to laugh at. Granted, she hadn't seen many to begin with, believing it's probably just in their nature to die in battles first. First line of defense? more like first in line to die. She couldn't imagine the same happening for Skadi, who showed immense control over the battle. It excited her to see the Vanadis playstyle in all it's glory.
Well, she simply couldn't stand around and let herself get outshined.
There was a pull to her words that did not offend Anya, in fact she liked it. The push and pull they had going between them was refreshing. It kept her motivated to do much more, though not to impress, to prove that she was more than capable. She was a force to be reckoned with and deserved to earn this woman's respect. That, she decided herself.
Just as Skadi had been knicked by the tip of the knight's sword, Anya dove in simultaneously with her teammate. Both of them attacking the monster head-on without a shred of fear to be found in their hearts. Anya drove her sword into the bounty boss' armor as hard as she could, sending it skidding backwards a few inches. That was as much as she could get out of it. She cursed under her breath.
Not even a damn crack in him. This wouldn't do. She stepped into his space aggressively, drawing up the defensive spikes of glacial teeth once again to chill and slow down Aldus once more. It would give her time to study the dynamic. There was a correlation she hadn't put together yet, and she had no intention of letting it overtake her before she could correctly pin down the cause. It threw Anya off of her rhythm when she dashed in to try and follow up Skadi's damage with her own. At first, she had thought that the woman's slow was wearing off the boss monster. But, it didn't make sense to her. The feeling that something was wrong was growing stronger by the minute. She had ignored it earlier when the boss' swing had barely missed the defender. She initially thought it was Skadi's own reactions and lack of concentration that had led up to that. Fighting side by side with her, Anya had to rule that possibility out.
Her expression fell quickly when she found herself hesitating to attack with the same pressure as earlier. Something was off and she couldn't put her finger on it. "Hey..." Anya called out apprehensively, "you've noticed it too, right? it's not us, it's him." It was vague, but she was sure that Skadi had picked up on it. Timing was her special skill that she had honed over the years in order to figure out patterns in her opponent's movements. There was no doubt that she had made a mistake, no way.
Reluctantly, Anya made the decision to attack it once more now that Skadi had slowed him down again. The boss suffered from two attacks from the Slayer's sword and gauntlet, health decreasing into the red now. As she turned back to escape to a safe distance, a shadow of the sword came right at her out of the corner of her eye. Shit! Anya raised up her gauntlet to maybe, just maybe guard the damage. From what she saw earlier, she was probably as good as dead. Sneaky son of a bitch, wasn't he? Her back stiffened when she noticed the knight turn towards the Slayer instead of herself, and the reaction was instinctive. Grabbing the woman with her free hand, she threw her away from the immediate battle, further into the clearing. She barely backed up in time to avoid getting sliced in half, the tip of the sword grazing her again and causing her to grit her teeth as she lunged in again, her health depleting an uncomfortable amount. They could do this, but they would need to be careful. He had only grown faster as the battle progressed- "His health!" She barked. "The lower his health gets, the faster he is." The moment the cooldown came off, she used another glacial teeth. There had to be a balance they needed to strike between drawing down its health and keeping him from speeding up too much. She would find it. She expected it to be swift and clean, but instead found herself flat on her back away from the knight. It confused her. She was sure the swing had knocked her away but did not feel the blade against her questionable make-shift shield. The answer was clear when she had gotten back up and noticed her defender's health. Fuck
Again she stood by this woman's side and instead of rainbows and sunshines for the mood, she was sulking. The Vanadis had once again, saved her ass. This was even after she had boldly announced that she wouldn't do the same for her. This debt was hanging over her head like a grey cloud and she wouldn't have admitted it but she would've preferred to risk her chance with the guard.
Her pride knew no bounds.

This time, she was ready, keeping time with Aldus as he began to speed up again, ducking under a swing of his sword and darting faster from side to side. It wasn't the type of thing anyone could give up, but if it translated, her physical training gave her an edge. She huffed at the woman's comment, but it sounded like a good plan. The near stranger was, honestly, smarter than she talked. Skadi noted it, to keep in mind for later. "As long as you can keep yourself away from its attention." She hissed, but was starting to relax. With snowball effect, it would be more and more difficult for the knight to ignore her. On top of that, she could already feel her speed and attack speed spiking. It never wasn't useful, but within this context, it was vital to her survival. "On my count! On zero, strike." It was like she'd hit a second wind, a grin on her face as she avoided the attacks, her mere presence egging him on. There was some trust, here. If she was the only one who attacked, her life could very well be in danger. "3 -" She ducked under a swing of the sword. "2 -" She leaped over the next one, clearly meant to cut her down at the knee. "1 -" She jumped back, heels skidding in the dirt and knocking against a bone hidden in the grass. Her eyes were bright; she didn't need the other woman to be having fun to feel exhilarated. "Now!" Rather than joining in herself, she fell back to recollect her concentration. It was a ritual that she often performed prior to entering the ring after rounds back in the day. Clear her mind and breathe in the sounds of the footwork, the swings, and twist that into an image. That had always been the key to her strong comebacks.
Brandishing her sword, Anya placed her entire being into the battle in front of her. She heard the woman's words and acknowledged them. It was now up to her to do her part -- correctly. The margin for error was unforgiving and she was aware. It was the reason behind her wicked grin, feeling a rush spread like waves throughout her body. Oh, she was more than ready.
She didn't allow the knight's swings to slow her down from closing the distance between them. At the count of three, she slid easily under the swing. The count of two forced her body to remain compact, close and low in preparation for her next attack. With the count of one, Anya twisted her body back and even before the word 'now' had completely left the lips of her partner, she had let loose. Her fist swung upwards at the knight completely smashing through the armor that he had worn at the same time the tip of the woman's rapier began to drive through it's chest. With nothing to resist the brutal thrust of the rapier, Aldus was done for.
It was only from the corner of her eye that she saw the once red health drain down to zero. All of the efforts that had lead up to this was worth it, and her eyes were wild for a moment as the ends justified the means. Everything had come to fruition, and with only two of them. It would have been more ideal, perhaps, to have waited for a healer. Regardless, what was done was done, and they were victorious. Skadi panted as she stepped back to watch the foe break down into pixels in all its glory, a grin already spread across her face. "Good work." It was the most anyone else could get from her; the attacker had done her job, and praise was due. Already, the woman was kneeling down to pick through the loot, taking her own and then standing back to allow the other woman to go through her own things. It wasn't as though she was going to fetch it for her, after all; she was clearly capable of taking care of herself. Bounties didn't seem all that bad. She might try some in the future.
