Who was the grove sacred to?[break] Did it really matter? Nebulous nature spirits aside, there were monsters that needed to be slain lest they taint the land of Faywood, and that was good enough for Raynauld. Flicking through the new shiny guild menu, he determined that Rex probably didn't care enough, and he was mostly unaware of Drakka. Unfortunate. He'd have to fix that.[break] But not today. He fired a request off at Akeno instead. Of the three, she was both the most receptive to his deity and the most likely to not spout off at him every other moment. All he had to do was keep her from eating the mushrooms and getting sick - shouldn't be too hard, all things considered.[break] He walked into the grove with purpose, a sword in place of the flail that had been there before - blunt trauma would merely aggravate any of these supposed "mushroom creatures" and cause spores to fly, no doubt. No, better to try and sever the mushrooms, stop the infection at its roots (ayy).[break] So he stood, and waited for Akeno.[/break] Quest - 1/9 akeno

"This is the last straw, lefty!" She sat in the middle of the street, people bustling around her as she sat, an obstruction in the center of lots of movement. Reaching back, she pulled out her knife from her bag. "You tripped three times today, and stubbed more times than I could count!" Pointing the knife at her foot. "No more!"
"Huh?" Suddenly, her malicious, nearly murderous moment she had with lefty was no more, as an invite popped up in front of her. Looking up, she read the details, shrugging and accepting the invite. "You live this time, lefty." Following the notification telling her where her party member was, she tracked down the grove, and soon discovered her armored friend and guildmate.
"Heya!" Running along, the barefoot lass stumbled over large roots of nearby trees, making her way over to the recognizable figure. "What're we doing here? Chopping down trees? Hunting bad guys? What's up?" With her hands on her hips, she looked around in a somewhat heroic pose.

"Ho, Akeno!" Raynauld waved to her, "Listen well, now. They say ill monsters, polluted by fungi of dubious intent, have weeded their way into the grove behind us.[break] "Our task is to end them," Raynauld drew his blade, "And keep the sanctity of those ancient fey whom designed this land intact. Come, let us sally forth!"[break] The first one wasn't hard to find - a Myconid of some sorts, but different from the usual ones. Word had it they weren't aggressive, and preferred to hide, but this one... it was writ large, an amanita cap for its head. Sunken orbs hid below the mushroom's brim, and from its body leaked an ominous purple substance - not that Raynauld knew what it was. Anyone could tell by looking that it was horrid, no doubt the cause of the strange infection.[break] "... That must be one of them. The description said a literal garden of these things must be taken from this land. One way or another." Weird... Where WERE the other ones? This was stranger than anticipated, honestly...[break] "Shall we? Ladies first, dear Akeno."[break] Quest - 2/9 akeno

"Ohh! Myconids, no way!" The Cannibal pointed excitedly at the little creature with a little mushroom hat on it's little head. Oddly enough, Akeno was seemingly rather happy about it. "They've got myconids in this game, awe!!" She shouted, leaning over slightly, with her hands on her cheeks. She stared lovingly at the thing. "There are those in Dungeons and Dragons!" Chuckling in amazement, she cheered. "I never knew they were in this game!"
"Oh well!" Seemingly casually, she reached an arm back behind her head, taking her slingshot out. She notched a pebble, straining the bamboo structure a little, as she pulled back to fire the little projectile at the mushroom creature. "It's unfortunate that we gotta kill em. They're so cute and ugly."
Hit in the head with the pebble, the thing fell backwards on it's rear, when another pebble was fired at it, causing it to fall back onto the ground. It seemed the bludgeoning effect of her pebbles wasn't very effective.

"No surprises there," Raynauld watched the rock bounce off of its skin. Knocked down, perhaps, but... Well, nothing for it. "Ave Maria!"[break] Raynauld dashed, empowered, and brought down his blade on the creature, a gruesome sacrifice. When he pulled back to free the blade, he let the creature writhe on the ground, looking at the blade. Sure enough, trace amounts of those purple spores remained - almost certainly, something about the creatures was causing the corruption. But what? Was it intrinsic to them? It didn't sound like-[break] An odd noise drew him away from his thoughts, turning behind him to see more myconids, in varying shapes and sizes. One the size of him. Others about up to his shins. One that only had one arm, the poor thing. Now they knew he and Akeno were enemies, and moved forward to stop them... not that Raynauld could guess how.[break] "Ah, they come!" He raised his shield, taking a defensive stance to buy time for his ally, "Very well - Akeno, let us show them devils! Deus vult!"[break] Quest - 3/9 akeno

"Sorry about this little guys!" Akeno charged thoughtlessly at the group of things, ignoring the big one as she leaped into the thick of it all. Having changed to her knife, she was better perpared to combat the things, eviscerating one with haste, before a large, bark-made arm swung down and crashed into her back.
It was probably a bad idea for her to ignore the big one, and she turned back. Gathering herself, she turned to glare up at the big, less cute, less lovable thing that glared down at her, The Cannibal grit her teeth. Shifting her knife from a slashing position to a stabbing position in her palm, she prepared to fight with the big one.
Then, a few of the little ones gathered around her, grabbing at her legs. She was stuck in place, as their strongest raised his arm to prepare to strike her again. Immobile, she could do nothing but look up and watch.

Akeno danced among them as if leaves on the wind, knives flashing to and fro. But even she could be fallible, now surrounded as she was.[break] Raynauld brought himself between the large one and Akeno, raising his shield. With a loud thump, the two forces collided, and the Crusader very nearly buckled against the sheer weight. And yet he stood fast, bringing up his blade and infusing it with the powers of Heartbreak Smite to lash out at the large one.[break] It wasn't very effective - there was little love to defend here against these creatures. Still, he would persevere.[break] "I shall buy you time here at the tipping point, Akeno!" He shouted, "Focus your efforts on freeing yourself!"[break] A solid plan, given her lack of mobility - if he tried to free her he just ran the risk of wounding her himself. Standing tall and eye-to-eye (relatively speaking) with his fungal adversary, he slammed the flat of his blade against the shield, the sound ringing throughout the grove.[break] "You face me now - Raynauld, champion of Lasivia, thou cur! Stand and face me in open combat, fiend!"[break] And so they clashed, blade meeting bark.[break] Quest - 4/9 akeno

Akeno was glad to have her ally to block the attack that would've likely crushed her flat against the ground. She didn't have the most substantial hp, to say the least.
The roots from the little mushroom creatures arms grew up around her, hoping to bind her further. Using her knife, she was able to slash back some of these little things, freeing her right leg first. Turning to her left side, she squirmed a little, but made no real progress at first.
"C'mon lefty!" She shouted. "Righty made it out! You better not get us killed!" Reaching down to grip her thigh with her hands, she pulled with as much power as she could, leaning to the opposite side, eventually pulling her foot free. With her left lower limb freed, she stumbled back, falling onto her rear.
"Thanks for saving me, pal!" Swiftly standing up she stood back to back with her companion, as more little creatures crawled up, approaching her. Carefully, she regathered herself to prepare for the incoming assault of slowly moving, adorable, evil things.

At least Akeno was covering his back now. He couldn't watch her, but given her predilection towards the precociousness of the myconids, he had faith that she wouldn't try to cram any of them into her mouth.[break] Hopefully.[break] Regardless, he'd leave them to her with a nod of his head, as his quarry was much bigger. It was slow and lumbering, but every strike the behemoth loosed slipped through his guard and still made him take damage. He'd been nicking at it every chance he got, but evidently its size wasn't merely for show. It wasn't until Raynauld wised up and went for a Heartbreak Smite aimed at the legs that any progress was made, with the brute stumbling over himself.[break] He pressed the advantage, slamming his shield into the brute to shove it back and follow-up. Of course, his class only dealt the type of damage that Rex and Akeno did in situations that weren't like this one. At best, he could hold the line.[break] "Akeno, how's it looking on your end?!"[break] 5/9 - akeno

As one little one began to lead the others in their cute march, Akeno interrupted the organization, by sprinting forward and punting the mushroom thingy far into the air, it's body hitting a tree and falling. Seeing as they were rather little, The Cannibal crouched down to swing through them, handling most of the ones around her with ease.
Suddenly, something struck the back of her head hard. There weren't many of the little ones left, but one, about three quarters as tall as her, stood out, a slingshot in it's hand. In fact, Akeno's slingshot. The thing must have taken it from her while she had been bound.
"I'm doing fine..." She responded to her companion. "I should be finished with these guys soon." There was a seriousness in her tone, something she usually didn't have. Then, what came after her words, could only be described as a petrifying screech, charging at the one that had stolen her toy, dagger in hand, kicking littler ones out of her way as she barreled through. Her anger was almost taste-able in the air.

It was worrying how quickly Raynauld had managed to interpret Akeno's state of mind. First she said she was fine, to not distract him, and then immediately bellowed at a pitch normally reserved for altar boys - meaning that she was deep in it.[break] Well, not like he could do anything about that. Right now, however, her pallid screeching DID have the effect of making his body lock up long enough to get struck dead-on by the giant, flying until armor met tree. Raynauld almost comedically crumpled down at the base of the tree.[break] "Ow..." In retrospect, maybe he should've tried the one he didn't know instead of Akeno. He scrambled to get up, narrowly raising his shield in time to block another strike. Now, however, the tides had turned as quickly as they had before. When Raynauld found the first opening he could, he barreled headlong into the large one to push him off-balance, only somewhat succeeding. And here he thought this would be easy. Raynauld began hacking as best he could at the myconid, until genius struck him.[break] "Ave Maria!" And with that shout, Raynauld leapt and spun, turning his body into a maelstrom of steel long enough to break through the large one's guard. The sound of an arm dropping loose was enough to give him solace - until he turned around and watched the myconid run full-tilt towards him.[break] 6/9 - akeno

"GIMME THAT!" Shouting in a grizzly fashion, The Cannibal charged, taking a pebble in the forehead, before she was able to grasp it out of the mushroom creature's hands. "This is mine, not yours!" And with that, she brought back her knife to pierce the face of the little mushroom thing. In an explosion of pixels and spores.
Some of the spores in the air reached into Akeno's mouth, causing her to cough, disgusted by the taste of the nasty stuff. Having become dizzy because of it all around her, she stumbled for a moment, before turning to face her ally.
Seeing the creature charging at him, she couldn't make it to him, but she knew, deep down in the pit of her stomach... Literally... She had something to help him. A belch, coming up from within her core, shot out as a projectile. A sticky, yellow, acidic ball soared through the air, splattering across the waist of the mushroom monstrosity, causing to slow and stumble, the acid audibly sizzling against the surface it had struck.
"Excuse me..." Akeno brought a hand up to her mouth as she became less dizzy, somewhat embarrassed by the belch. Regardless of that, it had been effective, and she soon regained her senses. But it left a very bad feeling in the pit of her stomach.

"... I'm never certain if I should applaud or berate you."[break] Well, she did save him... at the cost of... eating the awful mushrooms. God willing, it wouldn't drive her into a frenzy that ended either in Raynauld burying her or Akeno stabbing him in the back. Properly re-adjusting himself, he steeled his nerve and strode towards the large myconid, frowning, watching it writhe in pain.[break] "I will not miss you. Aut Lasivia aut nihil." He raised his sword, "Requiescat in pace."[break] He brought it down, and that was the end of the overgrown terror, its body left until Raynauld pulled the blade from its body to pixels and spores. Turning to Akeno, he caught glimpses of the few smaller ones she had left, running - in terror, or something else?[break] "... Well, that's a moment, at least. Are you relatively safe? We still have to find out why they're here to begin with." Raynauld decided that commenting on her... impressive diaphragm control was not worth the headache. "Remember - it said a small garden's worth. I don't doubt we're near the end, but I want to be certain."[break] In honesty, they had better have been near the end. Raynauld wasn't certain he could handle another set of these things.[break] 7/9 - akeno

With her knife out, and slingshot safe in her bag, The Cannibal looked around, seeing more of the little mushroom things crawl out from around the corners of bushes and roots. It didn't seem like there was any more of the larger ones, at least for the time being. The Cannibal pinched her nose.
"All of these guys shmell like shit." Her voice sounded very nasal as she spoke, with her nose pinched between her fingers. This incoming group was probably the last of them, hopefully. In a surprising moment of realization, The Cannibal looked up to peer at her teammate's hp.
It wasn't as high as she would've preferred it to be, but she rarely carried any sort of hp recovery option... With a disappointed frown, she realized that she wouldn't get to do cool abilities like that, seeing as how she was The Cannibal class. But at least she was able to slaughter stuff, and with brows furrowed, she'd grip the handle of her knife tighter, prepared for the oncoming assault of the little things, as the little army began to run.

Akeno wasn't wrong; they smelt as if they had come from the bowels of his uncle's animal farm. She also wasn't wrong about his health count - he'd seen better days, though admittedly most of those were prior to his arrival here.[break] But he couldn't stop. Not while people loved this land.[break] Perhaps some would call the rationalisation cheating, attempting to activate the deity's blessing. Those people rationalised such things all the time, the hypocrites. To that end, he did much the same. This would be the tipping point, if Akeno were to be believed.[break] "Ave Maria!" Raynauld dashed ahead of Akeno, straight into the myconid lines, swinging his blade downward. Let them come, then - Faithless could not defeat faith. "You will do no more of your corruptive influence, not whilst I draw breath and hold this blade! Come! Break yourself against this stalwart faith!"[break] He swung again, cutting the lines and breaking them enough for Akeno's inevitable rampage. Just a little bit longer. God willing, they would all go home today, at least.[break] 8/9 - akeno
