GIVE ME ALL YOUR ENERGY LOVE ME LIKE AN ENEMY Third time was the charm. Alternatively, some people just never learn. The first time Cat had done this with Ghost, he'd tried to vault over a charging bear and only escaped unscathed through what felt like a miracle. The last time, they'd landed not only in the wolf's den but literally on top of the wolf boss, Scar. Not a single part of this was what he'd call having a good time, but at least they hadn't come away with health potions the last time. If they kept at it and stayed smart, they'd make profits slowly but surely. They 'staying smart' part might be the hardest bit. This time, he'd insisted on them heading to the dungeon together, since apparently otherwise one or the other of them would be waiting a while. Once Cat went through the portal leading into the dungeon entrance, he rubbed his hands together in the cold. If they were going to keep doing this, he did need to get warmer armor - it was just, you know, expensive. For the first few moments, it was a relief to get out of the building heat outside, but that didn't last once the cold truly set in. He rubbed his shoulders for a quick second before pausing to look back at Ghost to make sure his party member had come with him. "Think we should go forward this time, or?" He asked, waving towards the fork of different paths. Honestly, it was likely the map reset every time a boss was defeeated, so it might not even be reliable to go off of their past experiences. He didn't really know how this game worked yet. Sure, people talked about it, but Catharsis was hardly the person to take someone's word at face value. He of all people knew better than that.

He didn't want to come back. They had already faced a bear and a wolf so it was inevitable with their luck that they would come face to face with something much more frightening. It was pure luck that had saved them time and time again. The last time felt like he nearly ran out on his. If not for Cat fishing him out of the freezing waters by the scruff of his coat, he would've perished with Scar. Here he was though, at it again with Cat.[break][break] Ghost jutted out his bottom lip, glancing down at the chubby pile of fur in his arms. The man stroked at it gently as he walked with his party mate. This was the only reason why he had come along with the scrooge. He was bribed unfairly with an adorable pet raccoon dog. The creature was curled up his arms, resting itself comfortably. From past experience, Ghost walked behind Cat to keep both himself and his new pet out of the male's reach. Last thing Ghost wanted was for his pet to be thrown half way across the dungeon as a weapon.[break][break] When prompted with the question on which way to go, Ghost shrugged lightly. He began to hum a tune as he looked around at their options. Like their previous times, the paths diverged into identical entrances with god knows what deeper within. His memory wasn't the best and was sure that they had already gone north and east leaving them with the unexplored west. " Giddy up," Ghost murmured standing by the west entrance with Pudge, his raccoon dog, held up against his cheek. GIVE ME ALL YOUR ENERGY LOVE ME LIKE AN ENEMY Cat blinked as he saw Ghost standing by a different entrance, but he shrugged and went on through that way instead. He wasn't necessarily picky, so that was fine. He frowned slightly as he passed by Ghost, honestly surprised that the guy had actually liked the ugly raccoon dog mix. He had honestly tried to make it so repulsive Ghost wouldn't try to get another free pet out of him as any kind of favor, but it seemed like a hit with the Phantom. If it worked on convincing the guy to try just one more time, though, that was worth something. Honestly, he couldn't blame him for not wanting to return, given the plumet he'd taken with a nasty wolf boss. Although it probably wasn't worth much, it had earned some respect and trust back from the Empath. That was, if the maneuver had been on purpose. With the way Ghost acted, it was usually hard to be sure. Catharsis went on ahead through the entrance, noticing the icicles jutting both down and up to frame the pathway as it opened up into a cave and yet still seemed determined to lock in their pathway. He hummed a short note under his breath as he saw this, unsure what to make of it. The cave opened up, and for a ways there was nothing but bright, white ice tinged blue. This didn't keep him from noticing, however, that where his vision tapered off it veered, very quickly, into a pitch darkness he couldn't discern anything else from. The drop outside of the icicles, too, seemed too steep for him to actually see a ground immediately - if he had to guess, it would be made of ice. "What do you think we'll find this time?" He asked with a practiced cheer, so as to avoid commenting on the way the Phantom was nuzzling the gifted pet. Whatever made the guy happy. His voice echoed through the opening cavern, and he frowned. He could have sworn he heard some kind of squeaking off in the distance, distinctly different from the ice pangolins they'd run into earlier. He frowned, but it seemed so far off he dismissed it as some background music effect to keep them on their toes.

What did he think they would find? " A yeti," he said finally. It made sense to him with the pattern of things that they would eventually run into a snow creature like a yeti. The Phantom snickered at the thought of being chased by a snow-covered big foot. Didn't sound half bad in comparison to their previous encounters. A yeti would at least give them a fight chance. [break][break] Ghost perked up at the chittering sounds ahead of them, but did not take a step forward when he noticed a drop after the edge. Close call. Unlike the wolf's den the cave was miraculously less dark, allowing him to make out the basic shadows and edges of the map. Before them was a narrow path way that was wide enough for one person and it glistened like pure ice. " Hm." Ghost petted Pudge as he paced back and forth to see what else he could make out in the relatively dark cave. It didn't take him long to conclude there was only one way to the other side.[break][break] " You go first," Ghost said calmly. " I've got your back if anything should happen to flank you." The Phantom smiled well aware that the Empath was sure to protest. GIVE ME ALL YOUR ENERGY LOVE ME LIKE AN ENEMY Catharsis nodded at first - before he caught what Ghost had actually said. He frowned as he shot a look over at the attacker, and opened his mouth to do the predictable thing of protesting. "Okay, no, we've been through this and-" He stopped suddenly as he looked at Ghost, watching him evenly. He realized, slowly, that Ghost was probably as delicate as he was in any actuality. If anything, their encounter with Scar had just proved that to be true. With a shuddering sigh, he shook his head and went ahead to walk forward, careful in his steps on the narrow bridge through the cave. There was no wonder in that the landscape here was manmade at least in its design. He wasn't sure he'd heard of any environment like this. A few steps were taken and he found that he didn't slip or slide even when he paused, and that let him relax. He looked over his shoulder at Ghost, motioning forward. "See? It's fine. We'll be fine." He called, just in case Ghost might be a little hesitant after his last experience. His voice echoed, and he could swear he'd heard that squeaking again. If prompted, he'd walk on forward to continue to lead the way; he just had no interest of going too far ahead without Ghost.

Ghost followed as he had promised with a little beat to his steps. He suddenly felt full of life again. Their first obstacle was a piece of cake as long as they didn't slip off of course. The Phantom took his first step on the icy bridge, stomping on it a few times to test it's durability. When everything checked out, he took his time in catching up to Cat. Instead of smooth ice the bridge was closer to being frosted judging by the crunch under his steps. [break][break] Ghost placed a gloved hand on his friend's shoulder and with the other, held the raccoon dog against his shoulder. He would hate for Cat to walk too quickly ahead of him and with the amount of darkness, it was possible for the man to walk out of his sight. Now, that wouldn't do at all. Ghost patted at the Empath's shoulder lightly to signal that he was ready to walk with him. He had no doubts that their pace would be slow and steady until they reached the other side.[break][break] Hopefully, soon as the sounds from earlier grew deafening now that they were on the bridge. GIVE ME ALL YOUR ENERGY LOVE ME LIKE AN ENEMY When Ghost touched Cat's shoulder, there was no immediate tension he had to actively relax. It was probably just because he had turned in time to see the touch coming. When he turned to look up ahead, there was a bit of hope; just at the corners of his vision, he thought he saw the narrow path beginning to grow a bit wider. Of course, the only way to know for sure would be to continue walking forward. Catharsis didn't recognize, at first, that the sounds of squeaking had grown closer. Attributing it to background noise had been his first mistake, as it meant he hadn't recognized the gradual climb in volume. It was when he casually thought of the budding headache from the noise itself that it clicked, and he stopped suddenly with a straightening of the spine as he tensed. He only barely looked to the side in time to see a white bat, about as big as Ghost's raccoon dog, racing right towards him. That's not something a bat would do, an angry throught flashed across his mind for a moment before the thing rammed right into his face with a shriek and he remembered that reason, sense, and logic didn't really matter here. His hand flew up to latch onto the back of the creature, and he sucked the pixels straight from the bat and into himself, righting himself easily enough. "That wasn't so hard," he said with a foolish moment of relief, before he realized that the cries had only increased in volume. There were more. A lot more.

This one was the size of a small dog and it's fangs poked out like short daggers. Ghost let out a small whine when it came for them with a shrill screech, he shut his eyes tightly. If it bit him then well, it wasn't going to kill him.[break][break] When the punishment was slow to come, Ghost opened his eyes to peek at what exactly happened. To his surprise, Cat had the monster at his mercy. The Empath sapped away at the creature until it bursted with a dying gasp. Ghost exhaled slowly and reached his hand up to pat Catharsis' head to let him know of his approval. " Good work," he murmured. " Suppose this will be smooth sailing after all."[break][break] He spoke too soon.[break][break] The flapping of wings intensified and when he looked up, he was met with over a hundred pair of beady eyes. All of them glowed the same way as the white bat. It didn't take a genius to know that the had finally run into a swarm. " Go! Go! Go!" Ghost yelled practically into Cat's ear as his hand tapped away rapidly at the man's shoulder. GIVE ME ALL YOUR ENERGY LOVE ME LIKE AN ENEMY Catharsis barely noticed the fact that he'd been patted on the head like some dog being praised for doing a trick right, his attention more attached to his imminent death looming above him as all of those bats woke up. He swore under his breath, in the same way that he often had just before having to turn and put on a bright smile for a hospital patient or a family friend, and honestly, Ghost didn't need to tell him the first time before he broke into a sprint. He could now, very easily see that there was a reason why a single one of the bats had been easy to sap of life in no time at all. He didn't bother to try to count onto them, holding an arm over his head as he felt one lunge at him, sapping at his health before continuing to fly and probably circle back. In that one attack, it was like a pinprick. With the swarm, it would be a death of a thousand cuts if they let it be. Thankfully, he had been right about the pathway starting to grow wider, into the mouth of a different kind of snowy cavern. His feet crunched down into a thicker layer of snow as soon as his feet made it off of the bridge, having been pelted by attacks from the bats before he turned swiftly and fired off a shadenfreude - it wasn't much, but when the bat caught in the line of fire burst into pixels, they were redistributed between himself and Ghost. He got the feeling that it would be an important kind of skill to keep up as he placed a barrier behind Ghost, trying to at least limit the bat's ability to come at them while he swore. It wouldn't be perfect, but it would limit the deluge down to a trickle of a few bats at a time. He glanced over, ahead of them, and immediately regretting having wished there had been a puzzle instead - up ahead was some kind of locked door with some mechanical pulleys and some kind of system behind its opening. "Uh- you want to handle that?" The Empath asked, not wanting to fight with Ghost to try to get him to handle the bats.

If it was a death trap, he hoped it didn't hurt as much as a thousand bats latching onto him. The Phantom yelped when the bat that had grazed Cat rounded around to come after him next. He started to yell at the top of lungs as he ran with all his might, grateful that Cat had gone ahead of him. If it was any one else, he would have run them over with the speed he was going. For once, he was thankful that Cat was by far the faster of the two when it came to running away. [break][break] The Empath already worked himself into a position to put up a convenient barrier after defeating another bat. Clutching Pudge safely to his chest, the Phantom dove himself into a tumble right inside of the pulsing force field. As much as he wanted to catch his breath, he was left with no time. Ghost was on it when he saw the sturdy stone door. He started to jog in place, eyes darting left and right to take in what he needed to do to get it open. Destroying the door wasn't an option if they needed to lock out the swarm, he decided. [break][break] He picked Pudge up between it's arm pits to look straight into it's eyes. " Which one?" Ghost asked frantically, shoving the creature in front of an assortment of levers. The Raccoon dog took it's time in the selection, sniffing at the middle lever first. With no time to lose, Ghost chose that as his option as he secured the pet under his arm and pulled with all his might down on the handle. The door slowly opened upwards like a mechanical garage, inviting them in.[break][break] " Come on!" Ghost called out. GIVE ME ALL YOUR ENERGY LOVE ME LIKE AN ENEMY While the barrier had kept out a lot of the bats, it hadn't - and, as time wore on, wouldn't - keep out all of them. Catharsis had trusted Ghost to handle the door, and even if it wasn't in his nature, he didn't have a choice on whether or not he might have kept an eye on the Phantom's progress with the puzzle. Every time he'd beaten down one bat, two more struggled through the breach between the mouth of the cave and the top of the barrier. He'd been forced to use bond of compassion on himself once, even going so far as to drop the aoe heal of well of tranquility when he finally heard the door start to move. "Alright! I knew you could do it." He shouted, backing up to run just as the barrier started to flicker. Ghost had really put his tricks to good use and saved their hides here. Where Ghost had gone through, Catharsis noticed the clicking of a timer even as he was running full speed, and he dove down into a slide to just barely make it through as the door closed shut, squishing a bat into pixels. He winced at the sight, before slowly starting to stand, the snow making its way all the way up to his elbow as he started to lift himself up. He cleared his throat, before looking for any sign of what they'd gotten themselves into. "Ghost? You there?" He called, noticing the cavern they'd come into was much more narrow, and yet somehow felt even colder.

He stood off to the side when he yelled for Cat to hurry up. The clicking of the timer was not subtle in the least and intensified as the door started to grind against the frame, threatening to close. Again, if not for Cat's abnormal speed, the man would've have met the same fate as an unfortunate bat. Literally sliding himself to safety by just a hair. Any slower and he would've lost his head to the door.[break][break] Ghost shuddered at the thought, shaking his head of it. It was over and done; they were both safe. " Yeah," he answered. Ghost swaddled his pet closer to the space of his neck when a cold chill blew at him. It felt like they were in a small blizzard. The Phantom shuffled his legs through the snow awkwardly, pushing himself forward to scope out the area. He was glad that the room was well lit opposed to the darkness from before so they had that going for them at least. Ghost squinted.[break][break] " Cat..." he drew out, " what do you make of this?" Ghost reached out to touch a stainless mirror that reflected him from head to toe. It rippled under his touch, spreading itself across the other mirrors that surrounded them. They were in a room with nothing but mirrors and snow even the door that they had just gone through just conveniently disappeared and it's place was another mirror. On each was a line of words lit up in a golden glow that faded right as the ripples smoothed away. " I...can't read this, can you?" GIVE ME ALL YOUR ENERGY LOVE ME LIKE AN ENEMY Catharsis frowned once as he looked from mirror to mirror, feeling almost like he was at some high budget carnival gig. This was really not his style, and he stepped back towards the door with the killer bats only to be met with another mirror instead. The man frowned, backing up and looking from mirror to mirror, only checking the text the second time. He squinted, trying to figure out the language, but the words went by so fast. It took a moment before he realized what was going on. "They're backwards." He finally said, glancing at Ghost and trying to whirl around in time to see the word reflected in the opposite mirror - too late. "I don't ... What? I don't get it." It was only by chance that he saw one mirror reflect a much shorter word on the one behind him and to his left - trust? He frowned, looking at Ghost and pointing to the corresponding mirrors with both hands. "So is 'trust' the mirror that actually has the word, or the one that reflects it?" He asked, patience a little worn as he let his arms fall to his side. "Also, honestly, genuinely, what the fuck does that even mean?" He ran a hand through his hair.

Yeah, that makes sense to him. Ghost turned around just in time to catch another word before it also faded. " Forward," he repeated for Cat and also, for himself feeling confused still. Instead of slaying monsters they were met with another puzzle. One that was less simple than the pangolins room and like the other, he was sure they couldn't simply shatter the mirrors. Worth a try.[break][break] Flipping a materialized card between his fingers, Ghost snapped it towards the mirror in front of him expecting it to do little. It did less than that. The card disappeared into the mirror as if it was absorbed and from his attack, another wave of ripples expanded. Again, the words temporarily appeared upon the surface as a clue if they could read it quick enough. Ghost whipped his body all the way around to try to get a hold onto the reflected sentence. It was just asking for a dizzy spell.[break][break] Ghost placed a hand to his face feeling ill now that he had basically spun himself like a top. How the hell were they supposed to do anything? The Phantom whined pressing his back up against the Empath's for some support. Just a moment was all he needed to feel better. GIVE ME ALL YOUR ENERGY LOVE ME LIKE AN ENEMY Catharsis didn't so much as blink when Ghost rested against his back, sympathizing with how fast he'd flipped himself around. Himself, he was just regaining his breath and energy while he tried to figure out what kind of person would design something like this, or what would be the really obvious key forward. The flashes of light that he was actually supposed to look straight at and then read were not helping his headache if he wanted to be honest. Just as Ghost leaned against him, though, the sentence flashed again and he squinted, reading it out loud a bit too fast. "To move forward, trust yourself to go backward?" The Empath's expression instantly soured into a scowl. "What kind of nerd bullshit is this?" That was it, this was how they were going to die - just because they couldn't move forward through a dumbass puzzle. Weren't these games supposed to be about mindless killing? Wasn't that what the soccer moms were always so worried about? Why pull some sick mind game on top of that, honestly, it made him so mad.
