It was Inari's good luck that landed them on a trip to paradise (or so they claimed). The couple headed into town for lunch when their eyes caught sight of a lottery drawing. On a whim, the both of them bought one ticket each to try their luck. As the goddess of fortune would have it, Inari's number was chosen out of at least a hundred participants. Which, granted them two tickets to a private island for the weekend through a luxurious boat ride. It was about time that they had a proper honeymoon.
kintoki was all smiles and grins the entire way there, racing to wait by the docks, brimming with anticipation. back in the real world, they both worked day and night to make ends meet. that left them with little money to spend on trips, much less each other. no matter how many hours or days kintoki worked, there was just never enough left over after paying bills to treat his love to something fancy. even through all of his insistence that kintoki was enough, it was hard to believe considering, he wasn't much. he was a simple sushi chef with no money to his name.
the thought didn't dampen his enthusiasm at all; he was determined to enjoy it. his ears twitched as he caught onto the faint sounds of soft footsteps. he knew only of one person with such grace and gentleness in their movements. his heart skipped a beat, thumping quickly within his chest. it felt like the first time that they met.

inari wasn't sure how to feel.
it was a strange mixed blessing, a moment of respite woven amongst so much fear and tension. the very game that threatened to take everything away offered them something inari hadn't been sure they could ever have had in the real world. as toki turned to face him, he lifted his eyes from the ground and a small smile found his face. "is everything ready?" he asked. the cruise wouldn't take as long as it perhaps might have, given the game mechanics, but it would be more than enough for them. he was sure of it.
he had never needed so much excess when he had toki. there was no hunger for gross extravagance within him versus the simple things in life, not when there was so much more to living. he couldn't keep himself from reaching out to trace a hand down the front of toki's arm, not when there was a chance they could die any day to begin with. a wandering gaze and he blinked in surprise, reaching for his lover's hand before he began to move with an, "oh, i think they're boarding-" it looked even nicer than he'd expected it to.

toki gently wrapped his hand around inari's to lead the way, but not before giving his love a kiss on the cheek. he felt good about the arrangements and from what he saw, it looked legitimate. he was cautious at first fearing that it was all an elaborate trick to rob them of coin or even worse, their lives. however, after following through with the procedures, it proved to be just another case of generosity from the game. generosity from the world was not a thing he was accustomed to and only knew it to be tough on him.
the game world was vastly different in a pleasant way. it was filled with friendly programmed faces and players who were more or less helpful to those in need. he couldn't count how many times he had been helped since he started. he never understood the appeal of games before this and now, having experienced it first-hand, he grew fond of it. less fond of the creatures trying to kill them at every waking moment, of course.
"careful when you step on, it sways," he said, tone soft with worry.

the kiss quelled any worries inari might have still had, and he smiled softly up at the man. even if this went all wrong, toki would be there to take care of him, and he would be there to take care of toki. he relaxed, allowing himself to be led the rest of the way by kintoki, trusting the expertise of the fisherman's son in these matters. he knew, right away, that everything was going to be alright. he paused by toki's side before heading the man's warnings, stepping up onto the plank leading to the boat only with support from toki's hand.
there was worry in toki's voice, but it was soft, not hard with urgency. it was the same as back home when he had stayed up too long into the morning studying, leaving toki in a cold bed. as soon as he felt he'd found his legs again walking onto the boat that rocked gently, he allowed himself a glance over his shoulder towards the man. as soon as both of them were on the boat, he looked around with wide eyes. he had no experience in this, and perhaps neither did toki, but the bakemono was still far more of an expert than he. "how long until they leave, do you know?" he asked, his voice soft.

kintoki chuckled at the question as a loud roar of the engine confirmed his guess. "soon," he answered. he walked himself up towards the front of the cruiser to familiarize himself with the scenary. he turned to look over his shoulder, a hand gesturing towards inari to come closer. the views were not breathtaking, but they were nostalgic. the sun was setting before them, casting a warm glow over the area. he felt at home again after being away from it for so long.
he crossed his arms on top of the railing as the cruiser purred underneath. it moved at a nice, steady pace that was fitting for the trip. the waters were as calm as they were, reflecting the skies upon their clear surface. when was the last time they relaxed together? kintoki could only recall coming home every night after work to minato fast asleep in bed or awake studying. the days were long when they were apart and when together, the moments they had always felt so brief. it was never long before his fiance had to leave for class or go to bed early to wake up for class.
now, they were together in comfortable silence with nothing to come between them. he had grown used to their routine to the point that he stopped wishing for moments like these. with it possible now, it was difficult to sort out his feelings. he was happy yet, something felt tight in his chest. going back, would he be able to continue those days now that he's had a taste of a better life here? the bakemono frowned to himself.

inari was quick to follow kintoki's lead, drifting after him and latching onto the last shred in his life that vaguely resembled stability. with the constant threat of death looming over him, kintoki and his smiles were inari's rock - perhaps unfairly. when kintoki leaned against the bar alongside him. briefly, he considered leaning against him, before deciding instead to stand close enough that his arm brushed his fiance's. even with the calm of the water, the vibrations of the cruise engine that he felt through the bars made worry he might unbalance him.
when toki grew quiet, he wondered if it had been the wrong choice.
inari watched him for a moment or so, quiet in case the silence had simply been him getting reacquainted with the sea. kintoki had always seemed loud and engaging to him, but inari was unfamiliar with how things were when the boat actually took him away. he had never realized just how deeply toki missed it until- well, recently. it was a reminder of just how much had been given up for him.
it seemed to him that something might be wrong, and so finally he overcame his hesitance and raised his soft voice, reaching out with a gentle touch and a soft voice. "toki, is something wrong?"

he was quick to answer 'i'm fine' without a pause, holding his smile for inari's sake. he didn't want the day to be ruined by his trivial thoughts. kintoki brushed his thumb over inari's hand to further reassure him. perhaps he endured too much on his own both physically and emotionally in his relationship. at the end of the day, however, it was well worth it to him. he was built strong for a reason.
it was rare for them to miscommunicate and even with his habit of hiding his feelings from his love, they got along well. ever since they were kids, they came together as a perfect balance. toki chuckled thinking back on it. "it's nothing you should worry about," he laughed, "i was just remembering the weird looks people used to give us. they could never understand how we could be friends. i was loud and you were quiet; they all thought i was bullying you!" those were innocent days.
"that's right, i never got to ask, but why did you fall in love with me?"

toki's assurance came quickly, in a way that made inari pause as though the man was assuring him while wounded. he relented with eyes that drifted down, resting his free hand on top of toki's when the man touched his other arm, drawing soft skin against toki's worn hands. there was something to the man that seemed off, and yet his gestures still calmed inari's worried heart. a laugh left his throat when toki spoke of times so long ago, back when everything had seemed to mean the entire world and he'd thought he'd never know any faces outside of those in the village.
his smile faltered for just a moment when toki asked his question - had he never told him before? but then inari realized that yes, he had told the man things he loved about him, and yes, kintoki had never asked him before this. there was nothing wrong with needing to hear such things now and again. he relaxed. it had never been as simple as any one thing, but toki knew that. saying as much felt unnecessary.
'you have always been everything i am not,' inari could say, but toki might mistake it for inari thinking less of himself as opposed to valuing what he was not good at as well as that he was. "do you remember when you began to bring me a fish every day?" inari asked. "it would always be one that you caught yourself." he smoothed his fingers across the top of toki's hand, "there was something about .. your tenacity, your passion-" he glanced over at toki, trying to catch his gaze. "i didn't stand a chance."
