inari blinked when toki asked for reassurance, only offering a smile and a nod. it was comforting, that toki would check up on him to make sure. it reminded him, as did many things, that his wants and needs mattered to the man. it didn't hurt that they were on the same page about aleu; he wanted to help her and protect her as well.
his shoulders dropped with relief when the both of them chose the lit path. "that's settled, then." he hadn't been sure what he would have done if they had preferred the dark path, except go along with it and try his best. he nodded, smiling, and moved on towards it, unworried as he lead the way. whatever the lit path held on the way forward, toki would protect him. he had faith in that much.
drawing his weapon, he moved forward, worried for the maneuverability but trusting in the decision they had made together. up ahead, he heard ... something, but couldn't see any movement. at least, not yet.

toki gave inari a warm smile, giving him a peck on the cheek before breaking away to stand in front of the group. whatever was ahead would have to answer to him first. he wasn't an aggressive man, but he was protective of those around him. if push came to shove, he would do his best to make sure they were alright. he let out a breath as his hand pushed open the door that had temporarily blocked their path, opening inward. he popped his head in, looking around quickly. no signs of threats just yet...
he nodded at inari's idea, following his beloved in the same movement, unsheathing his sword. there was nothing to fear, he decided. he stepped in finding himself surrounded by pure white. there was nothing around, but snow for miles it looked like. he squinted into the distance, speaking gruffly, "i don't see an exit. it might be further ahead." he didn't like it, but they had no other choice than to move forward. "think you can keep going, aleu?" he asked, a hint of worry in his voice. it was going to be freezing and they had been walking for what felt like miles since they started.

aleu followed the two men down the narrow path, turning her head slightly as toki kissed his lover on the cheek. it was rude to watch intimate moments such as that. the defender stepped in front of the group, leading them down the path, willing to take any blows that came his way. even though this path was lit, the girl was still uncomfortable with how tight the squeeze was. if anything were to attack them here, they'd be able to see their enemies, but how were they to attack? she couldn't help but wonder if may they should have taken the dark path, even if they couldn't see.
the two men drew their weapons, but aleu wasn't much of a fighter unless she was transformed. even then the girl much preferred to sit out than jump in. nonetheless, she equipped her claws, the weapon she chose to use outside of wolf form, even if she'd never used them before.
the lycanthrope let out a quiet, "yes," at the man's question, but soon she heard some sound coming from up ahead. both the men had to have heard it too, right? they were probably just too focused on getting out safely to make mention. she knew the two were in sync, there was no need to communicate something like that through words. there was no reason for her to speak up about it, but she was afraid. fear and silence only led to death, she had to say something. even if they didn't need words to communicate, she did. "d-did you guys hear that?" she meant to keep the stutter from her voice, but the fear passed through.

With a peck on his cheek, Toki had moved on ahead of Inari instead. The man ducked his head down with a small smile, letting him pass. Sometimes, he forgot the game mechanics. While he technically knew that Toki was a defender, it worried Inari to see him take the brunt of the force. And there would be a fight, this time. There was no way around it, even if they had been lucky so far.
When Aleu spoke, he glanced over his shoulder at her. He nodded firmly. "I did. I haven't seen anything, but we should be cautious." He said, before getting a closer look around the room. He could have sworn he heard it again, but it was in the distance, farther off still rather than closer. Inari frowned, glancing up reflexively, but all he saw was a dark ceiling. Still, there was nothing there. He looked after Toki, always the braver of the two of them.
It was too quiet. With the girl in mind, Inari lowered his head and began to chant, prepared for anything. Something was already there, waiting for them. He could feel it. It just hadn't shown itself to them yet. He was more than willing to continue moving forward, but not until they weren't left completely unprepared. The moment the shadow dog materialized, Inari began moving again, his steps cautious. "What about you, Toki? What do you think we should do?" He asked, probably appearing completely relaxed to the unobservant. He didn't want to startle Aleu if it turned out there was nothing to fear.

toki let out a harsh breath, nodding his understanding of inari's words. the man was right, they should be cautious within the room. there was no telling what would unearth from the snow to pounce at them if they were off guard. at least, with their weapons raised and ready, he felt better about moving around through the relatively harmless room. was it possible that there was nothing dangerous here? as much as he wanted to believe it, he knew it was best to be skeptical.
he moved slowly at first, his feet crunching through the fresh snow until he relaxed with inari's charm active. he wasn't entirely sure what it did, but it was something. in the shape of a dog, it made him feel like he was being looked after in a weird way. it was familiar to him, remembering the large stone dogs that sat watch in front of temples back at home. meant to ward off evil, he was sure that was inari's intention with summoning one now.
kintoki froze in place, eyes flickering across the landscape, watching for signs of enemies. like the other two, he did hear a strange indiscernible sound mixed in with the slight wind. it put him on the edge as the party proceeded deeper, coming across a large door by the end of it with little trouble. toki shot his party a look, unsure if they should push it open. it was a gut feeling that told him the source of the sound was definitely, behind these sturdy doors.
"should we?"

with each step they took further down the travel, the girl felt herself begin to shake a little more. whatever was making sounds continued to make them as they got closer. it was like it knew they were approaching and it was warning them of what was ahead. it was like it was telling them to go back, to not step any closer. yet here there were, coming closer and closer. inari summoned some sort of dog, aleu wasn't sure what it was, but she hoped it would protect them from whatever laid ahead.
there was nothing the girl could do to help. if worst came to worst, she supposed she could transform, but if something attacked out of no where, there was nothing she could do to protect herself. she would be a goner the second anything pounced on them.
there was nothing, though, the distant sound becoming closer yet muffled. the group came up to a door. aleu was certain that whatever laid beyond those doors was what was making that eerie sound. the white haired man asked if they should go through, but what other choice did they have? there was no turning around; they would just be taken back to the fork in the road. aleu knew that if they had gone that path, they would have eventually come to a different door that came to the same room. she knew that this was the final destination no matter what. the lycanthrope kept quiet, waiting for the other man to answer.

inari smiled when toki asked first, bowing his head in a nod. even looking around, he hadn't seen any other path but forward. his heart began to beat in his chest, and he doubted himself, but this was why they had come. turning back now would just mean coming back later. the wish to move forward wasn't so much born of confidence, as a feeling of inevitability. it did not even occur to inari to simply sit back and let others do the dirty work of forging the way forward through the dungeon.
the summon beside him panted, nothing to attack within sight. it eased inari's nerves in that it meant nothing was there in the room with them, but it also meant that the sounds truly did come from the larger door that toki had found. the suspense was almost too much.
"let's." He said, stepping forward and reaching for the door. even with how weak he was, the door began to shift - but only so far. he frowned at such a strange contraption. "I ... don't think i can do it alone." he admitted freely, with toki right beside him. whether the door only needed one more or not to push it, or if he was simply too weak, he wasn't sure. still, with toki and aleu with him, the three of them together would figure it out. he wasn't worried about that.
the battle to come, on the other hand, was a different story.

kintoki stood to the side as inari had taken the initiative in opening the large stone door. it had budged at least, more than he had expected. it wasn't uncommon knowledge that inari did not possess physical strength having been rather frail as a child. not only that, the man spent most of his youth indoors studying. it was never a problem, of course. toki gave himself a little boost of encouragement, beating a fist against his chest as he stepped forward right over inari. placing both his hands on the door, he pushed hard, inching the door little by little until it was wide enough for all three of them to get past.
toki grinned down at his fiance before backing up to motion towards the new path and like earlier, he was the first to enter. they were close and had come so far that this must be the end. the defender entered fearlessly, standing in place to take a look at this other room. there was no snow, only stone beneath their feet. toki tilted his head to the side, pointing at the figure up ahead cloaked in the shadows.
"statue?"

aleu watched as both men worked together to push open the door that blocked their path. her heart began to beat faster as they finally pushed it open enough for them to fit through it. the girl waited for both the men to walk through before she followed closely behind them. she didn't wanted to be faced with any terrible monster when passing through, but to her surprise, there was nothing there to greet them.
things had seemed too easy as they made there way through. there hadn't been any monsters or traps anywhere along the way. aleu could only imagine how big and scary the boss that greeted them would be. up ahead, a shadowy figure stood. toki had called it a statue, but it's presence seemed more ominous than that. she didn't that that it could be a statue.
she considered transforming into her wolf form now, but what if it was nothing and she was just overreacting? she didn't want to change if she didn't have to. instead she simply asked, "should we get closer?"

inari's hands nearly withdrew when toki took over opening the door, but he didn't want to leave all of the strain to the other man. while he probably didn't help much, he didn't give in, even as it was clear most of the door opening was his fiance's hard work. when the other man stopped, inari had little choice but to do the same and follow him through, calm as the girl and shadow dog followed behind him. unhindered by the large door, the sounds escaped to him more clearly; the low growling of bears.
inari had never seen one up close, and the hair on the back of his neck stood on end as he watched the armored creature stand tall and proud. around him, others rose, as if they'd been interrupted from something. inari did not like this. "be careful," he said again, although he half suspected toki to already be on the move. lifting a finger up to point towards the bear, inari watched as the dog leapt forward to bark at the bears.
it was a shrill noise that echoed out instead, a pulse sent towards the group to damage them with the sound itself.

kintoki bristled when the 'statue' had moved and even worse, it started to growl at them. he inched forward with his sword in hand to show the massive bear that he wasn't going to back away. not that he could as the doors had slammed shut after he heard aleu entered, but wasn't sure. he didn't have the liberty to check for the girl, afraid that the moment he tore his eyes away, the beast would have killed both him and inari. "aleu? you make sure to stay close to us," he said, voice dropping into a rough whisper. he didn't know what this thing was capable of and didn't dare to test it.
his red eyes widened when the bear had come barreling at them the exact second inari's charm had started to bark. "it doesn't like thatttt!" toki yelled, sheathing his sword away. there was no way for him to slice through a rampaging beast, but, knew it was possible to at least wrestle it. he had to try. kintoki moved quickly, charging at the bear until the two had collided, heads clashing against each other so hard his ears were ringing. next, the creature had reared up on both legs, arms swinging down at him. with his bare hands, knocking him away.
gotta think, gotta think, gotta think.
there was nowhere to run.

it was soon quick to see that the shadow was no statue at all. it was a bear. a bear that stood on two feet and wore armor. a bear that didn't look very happy at the trio for disturbing it. a bear that also didn't like inari's dog and the sounds it was making. a bear who had plenty of friends to watch its back. with kintoki facing the bear head on, it was now or never to change. there was no time to be afraid. if they had to protect her, they would end up dying in the process. this time she had to fight on her own.
using call of the wild the once human girl now stood on four paws as a wolf. it was the only way she knew how to fight, the only way she could fight. sticking her muzzle into the air, she let out a deep howl, summoning a small pack of wolves to aide her. the three canines charged in from behind the bears; aleu never questioned where they came from, they just appeared whenever she called.
with one more howl, she strengthened her attacks by placing a "bleeding" effect on them: her tooth and claw would do a small amount of damage over time. without wasting anymore time, she charged in to help kintoki, using her teeth to bite down sharply onto the bear's calf.

inari was afraid.
the bear was even bigger than his first impression had told him when it charged, but it was not for his own safety that he was so afraid. toki, predictably, went for the beast headlong. his heart leapt into his throat as he watched the bakemono grapple with the bear, feeling as though there was nothing he could do. they aren't supposed to like it, he thought, but the words never left his throat. it was a moot point, left long behind the moment the battle had begun.
"again," he ordered instead. the banshee spirit raised its head to bark again, threatening and snarling as the sound waves rushed towards the bears. there was no time, inari thought, his eyes glued to toki. this was real. if they failed, he could lose everything, or perhaps his life.
inari jumped when wolves entered the fray, expecting them to be another enemy, but when he glanced over his shoulder he noticed that aleu was gone. had she not followed them into the battle? perhaps that meant she was safe, or, worse yet ... it took him a moment to realize, once the wolves had attacked the bears rather than himself and toki. for just a moment, his shoulders dropped, before one of the bears rounded around to flank one of the wolves - which of them was her? he couldn't tell.
chanting softly, he cast paper charm: seal, watching the enchantment fly as the smaller bear temporarily disappeared. it would last hardly seconds, but any time that could be bought would make all the difference.

kintoki started to cough as he rolled over onto his stomach, touching at his side gingerly. broken ribs? he couldn't tell, but it pained him to stand back up. once he did, he looked towards the bear then back to where inari was standing watching proudly as the man was doing his best. he was working his magic, the charms affecting the bear a little more than earlier. if not for the dog charm, he was sure that he would've been mauled by the violent beast. the screech had deterred him and the binds had held him in place, though, he knew not for long.
"come on, move!"
kintoki gritted his teeth powering through the searing pain at his side. they were going to get out of this place alive even if it meant breaking all of his bones. drawing his sword, the bakemono froze in place as the young girl -- now wolf -- had started her own assault on the monster. it brought a smile to his face and gave him a little more energy in his step. it was clear that they did not give the shape shifter enough credit; she was going to be fine as long as he did his part.
lunging back in, kintoki pressed the tip of his sword as deep as he could into ursong's paw. he hoped that it would be enough to cut down it's strength and hopefully, give them an edge. with a twist, toki pulled the sword back out, wincing as the boss began to roar out in pain. the paw fell to his side almost lifelessly.
