GRUNGE: hey is there anyone around here GRUNGE: im looking to start this goblin quest GRUNGE: i dont know if i really need a second person GRUNGE: but hey why not
Darrin sighed as he typed out the messages. When he'd set out on his own after this whole mess started he'd expected to be able to just exist by himself for awhile. That was how he'd always handled games like this before (learning the ropes and grinding by himself) and he'd assumed this time wouldn't be any different. Turns out the whole "your mortality is tied to the game world" deal was a slightly larger factor in his decision making than he'd imagined.
In any other game approaching a quest like this solo would be a no brainer. The prospect of fighting waves of Goblins would have been no more than an interesting challenge. A task where if things went south he'd be able to train up and try again. Not so here. If he overestimated himself and died that would be it and, while he wasn't as stressed about the prospect as some other players he'd met recently, he certainly didn't want to die because he made a bad call.
So, here Darrin was; sitting outside some beginner level area hitting up the channel chat to see if anyone was in the area to do this quest with him. He figured Just one person would be enough. He was already a tank and with how low level the area and quest were he couldn't see the game throwing any curve balls that would put him in the dirt.

daddy: never here, daddy's here. daddy: i mean, if you need a second. daddy: haven't done much quests out here.
daddy sent out a party invite to grunge with a smile on his stupid face, not even able to see who or where the other person was in this large area. daddy walked with his beginner shield, axe and armor grinding some low level monsters to test his abilities. it was incredibly scary to think that one wrong step could ruin the entirety of everything he had in the real world but as he continued to think about it, he hadn't much. a college student who probably flunked out now due to how long they've already been inside of the game. All Daddy really wanted was to log out, he missed his family.
as the other accepted his party invite, Daddy saw the NPC offering the quest and decided to start it, seeing the mini-map showing that grunge was on the other side of the village. Dom walking over with a quick nod. "You ready to save the village?" He was half-serious but knew that this quest should be easy enough. "I'm Daddy, Vanguard. Main Tank if I ever get there. You?" He wondered, looking Grunge once over, offering a smile in the silence as the noises of the goblins began to build from the other side of the trees.

GRUNGE: yeah i wouldnt be sending out messages if i didnt need a second GRUNGE: im right outside faywood village by the quest giver
of course he'd netted some weirdo. darrin didn't know what else he'd expected when he cast out an open line into a sea of strangers, but it was with an odd sense of acceptance that he approached the response from "daddy". it was almost comforting. if someone normal had answered his call maybe darrin would have felt tempted by the end of the quest to strike up some kind of working relationship but as long as he was dealing with a guy who'd pick that as an IGN he didn't really have to worry.
there was even less worry once the other player showed up and darrin could have a good look at him. he was fairly decent aesthetically -- sporty build, nice eyes -- but looking at his gear and hearing his role made it seem simply logical that they wouldn't work together too much more after this. another tank, probably a better one than his class but probably similar enough in stats that it wouldn't make much of a difference.
"we're not really saving anything," he answered daddy's question with a flippant tone before turning to the quest giver, "you already know my ign from the chat. i'm a defender class too; a sworn sword if that means anything to you. this quest probably won't be hard but with two tanks? it's going to take longer than i'd like i can feel it."
even as he spoke he flipped through the interaction with the npc. it was possible to do all of this stuff verbally, to roleplay if you were so inclined, but thankfully the game hadn't ditched the idea of a text interface. by the time he was done with "introductions" darrin had the quest ready to begin and the sound of whooping goblins started up as they spawned in within eyesight outside the village entrance.
"here, let me get this out of the way," darrin spoke as he reached out his hand, placing it firmly on daddy's shoulder. there was a glow where their bodies met for a moment, and then a moment later a pair of circles around both their feet. indicators for his oathtaker passive.
"stay within a couple feet of me, we get bonuses from staying close."

”i guess i do, grunge. Was just being friendly, is all.” he offers a smile in solace to the other’s curt attitude. He couldn’t blame anyone, truly, on the new level of stress forced upon them all considering it was a truly life or death situation. ”i think it’ll be fine, who knows, maybe you are the off-tank i’ve always needed.” looking over at the other giving a quick nod, dominik gripped his sword tightly before feeling grunge’s hard against his shoulder. ”Can do but if we’re giving out buffs..” he chimed in, releasing a large shout into the surrounding area using his skill BOOMING VOICE to increase their damage down for a short period of time.
The goblins began to appear from the bushes, each one a different hue of green with slight deformations scattered across their bodies. They hadn’t seemed to strong, barely level 2 creatures but it was just so unknown how quests could turn here. Dominik began by jabbing at Grunge to follow him in pursuit, rushing into the fray of about six goblins for the first wave. Using his SHIELD SLAM, knocking his beginner shield into the face of one of the goblins to build threat and see how much damage the bread and butter skill of his class did against opponents his level or a little higher.

"yeah, friendly, so was i," darrin responded with a coy grin as the quest started, "we've got stuff to do, figured i'd focus on that. think of it like . . . business casual conversation. it's not quite formal, but i'm still here to work."
the word work bled nicely into his next focus. darrin watched the goblins approaching two by two, three by three, and in all manners of singles and readied himself. his right hand drew his sword and he leveled it as well as he could in his grip; it still felt weird. off-balance as if there was some hidden part of handling the blade he was missing. regardless he saw no reason to make a big fuss out of it, just set his eyes on the quickly encroaching enemies.
in his head darrin had thought he'd likely wind up leading the charge, but when "daddy" nudged him on the shoulder he quickly realized that letting the vanguard run in first was probably for the best. hell, it was in his class's name. it even felt better, following the hardier tank like a shadow seemed almost natural to darrin, and sure enough when the actual fighting started he found himself more at ease than he'd been in the past when fighting and questing solo.
even surrounded by goblins he could rest easy, "daddy" had the aggro after all. not too easy though. if "daddy" was going to keep the goblins in check darrin figured it was his job to keep "daddy" as healthy as possible. he did his best to weave his way through the wave while the bulk of the goblins focused on the vanguard. a charging goblin went in for a swing on "daddy's" right and was met by darrin's duty of care -- his body blocking the bulk of the attack's damage while only the end of the swing actually scratched his party mate.
two swings after that and that was one goblin down (booming voice's bonus helping in no small part), allowing darrin to swing around to the other side and take another few cracks at another offending goblin. he could feel himself falling into a healthy rhythm already -- a dance between his eyes scanning the remaining opponents and his body's readiness to meet them (he liked to pretend it was his own reflexes but more likely than not the game was assisting him -- as it likely did everyone).
he finally garnered up a bit of threat for his trouble, but was able to meet the first angered goblin with a flash of stalwart resolve, catching its crude weaponry on his longsword before throwing the damage back at it with a flick of his wrist.
"maybe this won't be so bad," he breathed through his teeth, the commentary mostly for himself.
