After two raid bosses, Reign was almost glad that the game decided to give them a break. Each time a new raid came up, it was always that constant fear that someone was going to die. She had already witnessed it in the first boss that had popped up. She wasn’t going to forget the way the girl burst into a bunch of pixels while her loved one watched. It was that fear that made her hesitate each time when she was faced with a monster in this world. She didn’t know when her day would come. She thought it would be in her sleep in a warm bed sixty years in the future. She never thought that it might be in a virtual reality game that she bought to pass the time and relax. When she bought BWO, she didn’t expect to get pulled into the shitstorm that was this game.
Now she was stuck with no way out except beating the game...and that meant risking her life. She wouldn’t lie and say she wasn’t afraid of because she was. But she didn’t want to stand idly by and wait for someone to do something. She had always been an independent person, going out and getting the job done herself rather than letting someone do it for her. She wasn’t going to sit on her ass in the Town of Origins hoping to wake up one day. If she could do the job herself then why not do it?
But even she was starting to get a little somber about what was happening around them. And it was that reason why she decided to go to the ball. She had heard there was going to be alcohol and dancing which she was always down for the former. Dancing might have been an added bonus if she found someone who wasn’t going to fall flat on their face. There was a lot of drinkers tonight and while she didn’t mind, it would help if she was even close to being drunk. She was already on her second glass and she wasn’t even buzzed. She had already ordered a bunch of bar snacks from the bartender that was there but it wasn’t getting her anywhere.
And as much as she wanted to eat dinner at the fancy tables that were set up, she was more of a ‘hang out at the bar and crack jokes with the bartender’ kind of person.

who would have thought someone could actually get drunk in a video game? she guessed, logically, if someone could feel pain than they could also get the sensation of getting tipsy. but logic had long since left the woman's mind and the idea of sitting down to overthink such unnecessary mechanics just made her want to down another shot. everyone around her didn’t blur just yet, but their movement seemed too inviting and the music a soft hum at the back of her mind whispering her to stay. socializing was as much of a strong suit in her than everything else, but with some drinks in her eliza felt as though she could do anything.
her hand grazed the top of the bar as she made her way through the party, searching the crowd for someone interesting to focus on. everyone had a date of some sorts (or maybe that’s how her mind read it) and drinking alone was never really all that fun.
everyone's attention was on something else, someone around their arms or across the table from where they sat, engaged in their own little conversations. she fumbles, avoiding another pair of unfamiliar faces as they walk past, leaning her body against the bar enough to hold herself steady. it's only when eliza stops looking out that she catches a small sight that triggers some sense of familiarity.
“well well,” she muses, “i’ve been seeing a lot of you lately huh.” her attention focuses on the only face in the room that she knows, like a beacon only her eyes could see. it’s comforting to know her search is over, or at least for now. the defender, if her hazed memory wasn’t betraying her; the same one she had seen more than anyone else in this god forsaken game. “drinking alone is never fun,” she tries her best to act casual, in a way someone would be who hadn’t already drank more than they needed to. “could i join you?”

The bartender NPC was a fucking bore. She had wanted to get drunk and talk about how shitty of a game this place was; it’s what people with problems did when they came to the bar right? But so far the only thing out of his mouth was the automated, programmed script. If she so much as talked to him, he automatically started to ask if she wanted something to drink. While she didn’t have a problem with that per say...she did want a little more human interaction from him. Hell, he could have been quiet and pretended to care like most of them do. But no matter how much she tried, she wasn’t going to get much interaction from him except what he was programmed to do.
Just as she was downing the rest of her drink, a body leaned against the counter next to her causing her to glance over. “Well I wasn’t expecting to see anyone I knew.” Reign smiled and leaned back to stare at the other. She really didn’t think she would run into anyone she knew. Then again, it wasn’t like she interacted with other people here. But she did remember Hourglass from the many times they partied together. At least she was one of the more competent players in the game.
“Yeah you can join me...even though I think you’ve had enough.” She nodded over to the barstool next to her and tapped her empty glass on the counter. It was a little obvious the woman already had plenty to drink but it wasn’t any of her business what she did. It’s not like Reign wasn’t trying to do the same thing... “I’m trying to tell my life story to the bartender right here while I try to get shitfaced. He isn’t budging at all.” She glared over at the NPC who casually walked over and set a glass in front of her again.

it’s funny to her, knowing deep down she’d probably have not listened if the woman had told her no. she’d have sat down right beside her regardless of the answer, too drunk to care and too tired to seek attention anywhere else. plus, in this entire ballroom, reign seemed to be the only person here that eliza knew. luckily for both of them reign had agreed to her company and, with the comment that she might have already had enough to drink, eliza couldn’t help but laugh. her hand lifts to her mouth, trying to quiet her laughter just a bit and hide a smile too big for such a simple comment.
she makes her way onto the stool next to reign with as much grace as she can muster in that moment. at least she didn’t fall. her eyes catch the movement of the npc that places a drink in front of reign, only to focus solely on what the woman says. she wonders how she could get a drink for herself, even if reign was right. it surely wouldn’t kill her to have another one.
“well, let's see if i can help you with both of your problems.” she starts, pointing towards the drink reign had just ordered. “down that, than start from the beginning. i’m all ears. we could even make a game out of it.” her voice falls into this small giggle of a laugh, right under her breath as she recalls what she just says. a game within a game. it was stupid and, if she had been just a tad bit more sober, she wouldn’t have laughed at such a dumb thought; but she wasn’t, and drunk people were always bound to make a fool of themselves. “if you tell me something about yourself, i’ll do the same. that way, we either both come out of this knowing far too much about the other and being too drunk to care.” she says, shrugging her shoulders a little. “or, we get so tired of hearing mundane stories we need to get drunk to make them sound funny.”

She couldn’t help but smile at the way Hourglass was acting. She knew the other could be a little playful considering all the snow puns that they all participated in. But she wasn’t sure where the woman’s personality ended and the alcohol began.
Reign wasn’t sure if she wanted to play the game or not. Hourglass was good company; it was a fact considering the amount of raids and dungeons they’ve been through together. And she highly doubted that she would go around blurting out her life to everyone in the vicinity. And she doubted that they would remember the conversation with how wasted they were going to be tonight. “Fuck it, I’m down.” She had never been one to back out of a challenge. Raising her glass, she toasted to herself before knocking back the drink, barely wincing as the alcohol burned its way down her throat. “With our luck, we’ll be too far gone to remember a single thing about each other.”
She had joked about sharing her life story but it wasn’t like she was going to spew out every little sad detail about her life to someone. She wasn’t a private person but it was a little personal to share facts about herself to someone she didn’t know that well. One thing she did know was that if she was going to delve into all of her issues, she was going to have to be gone.
“I’ll start,” Reign slammed the glass onto the counter and turned to look at the blonde next to her. “What’s your actual name?” Might as well start from the bottom and work their way up.

maybe she was being too bold or perhaps too pushy, but she was bored and drunk in a party where only a single person knew her; what else was a girl to do? when she heard reign agree to her offer eliza couldn’t help but smile, easing her body in the seat. at least now she wouldn’t have to be pushy and force the woman to have some sort of fun with her. in silence eliza watches as reign downs the drink as she was told, eyeing the glass as it slams against the counter.
this was going to be fun.
before she answers eliza eyes the woman beside her, feigning surprise as she leans forward, enough to outstretch her hand and take the glass from the others grasp. for a moment she holds her touch there, not yet pulling her hand away as her fingers brush against the others to remove the glass from reigns possession. “wow, not holding back are you. such personal information, i don’t know if i could even answer.” her tone, laced in whatever alcohol this bar was serving hints at light-hearted flirtation. before the other could pull away or make a comment eliza does it first, moving her hand away with the glass now held firmly within it.
she mimics the others actions from before, tapping it against the counter to bring forward an npc to place down another drink for her. “might as well, right?” she says, before bringing the cup to her lips and downing the burning liquid. maybe she shouldn’t drink more, but rationality was quickly losing the fight.
“my name’s eliza, nothing special but i guess i could have been given something worse.” there’s the familiar sensation, the rush of the alcohol settling into her body; and its relaxing. “reigns a pretty cute name as is, but let's hear what you were shackled with. what’s your name?”

Reign allowed the woman to take the glass from her hands, taking note of the way the other woman’s fingers lingered over hers. She didn’t know if it was the alcohol or not that was making the other a little bolder but she didn’t mind. If anything, she was hoping to get to that state as well. She smiled as the other pulled away and commented about her first question. “Hey, we might as well start off easy. You’ll thank me later once I start getting really deep like me asking if you have daddy issues or something.”
She waited until the bartender brought the woman a drink and watched the other down it as well. She should be trying to be a good friend and stop the other from drinking. It was very apparent the other was drunk. But it wasn’t like these were their real bodies. Whatever strange thing the game was doing, it was making their game selves think they were drunk. She did want to know if they still had to deal with hangovers and morning sickness.
“Eliza...cute name, it suits you.” Reign commented, glancing over at Eliza with a small grin. However before she could comment further, it was the next question that made her pause. “You’ll be happy to know you can make fun of my name.” Reign traced the edge of the glass with her fingertips, a frown slowly making its way onto her face. It was why she didn’t mention her name when they were all in the dungeon together. Why add more fuel to the fire? “It’s Snow... you know the thing we kept making puns of that time. I’m letting you get away with laughing since we’re about to be too drunk to remember much of this conversation anyway. Your turn.” Maybe it was a bad idea to start off with names first.

as the liquor made its way through her system eliza couldn’t help but feel a flutter in her gut, anticipating the next question or answer causing a rise in excitement. it was due to the alcohol, she thought, or at least some percentage of it was. she hadn’t done something like this in so long. there’s a small smile on her lips at the compliment given to her, eyes averting slightly to see the glimmer of the glass reflect the light of the bar. “well, thank you.” she starts, voice low as she listens to reign begin to talk, silencing herself in order to focus on the woman's words.
was she expecting her to be rude and laugh? whatever name she had been given probably wasn’t as bad as the other thought. without saying a word eliza looked over at reign, eyeing her with suspicion laced curiosity. she didn’t want to say anything in fear that it would trigger the reason behind the woman's hesitance, causing her to call of their little game and leave her hanging on a cliffhanger for the rest of the night. so, she waited until the words came to reign.
she feels the laugh leave her lips before it hits her that it happened. quickly eliza's hands come up, clasping against her mouth in order to force whatever laughter was left back into silence. or, as much of silence as she could muster. it wasn’t the name that got her but the anticipation that had come with it, than the resurfaced memory of their snow adventure and the puns they had all made.
“i-i... i’m so sorry,” she stutters, voice muffled by her hands still clasping her mouth. she can feel the water in her eyes from her held back laughter and, in an attempt to remove the watered blurr from her vision, she blinks more until there’s that feeling of tears against skin. “w-why didn’t you say anything before about it... it would have made such a great pun.” there’s a hint of guilt, buried under the amusement accelerated by the rush of alcohol.
slowly she removes her hands from her mouth, doing her best (but failing) to hold back a laugh stuttering out beneath her breath. “it’s such a cute name, i promise.” she starts, trying to make her voice sound casual. “y-you should have made your username something related to snow.”

Reign knew she was going to regret the question as soon as she asked. As much as she wanted to start off easy, it wasn’t worth the teasing and laughing that would come with it. She could see the way Eliza was trying to cover up her laugh and while it was cute, it wasn’t worth it. She watched as tears came to the woman’s eyes and rolled hers in response. Her name was always a bitter subject and this was the reason why. It just reminded her of all the teasing she dealt with when she was a kid. But it wasn’t like Eliza knew about her childhood. She would rather deal with her laughing than anyone else.
As the woman questioned her about her choice of not revealing her name during their adventure, she couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow. “I could deal without the puns.” She scoffed and raised the glass to her lips with a frown. “Telling you girls that would have made it worse.” She was getting buzzed from the drinks but she wasn’t quite where she wanted to be in alcohol consumption. However instead of chugging her glass like normal, she chose to drink this one a lot slower.
“I actually hate the stuff.” Reign said and leaned against the counter. She had thought about putting something related to her name but nothing would have worked for her. Instead she chose Reign; a rule of a king, or in her case, a queen. It was a strong name unlike something after the delicate snow. At least with this, she could be seen as something powerful and trustworthy.
Or at least that’s what she had in mind when she was creating her username.
“Who wants to be named after the frozen shit that comes and fucks shit up every winter? Back at home, I was always shoveling it out of the driveway only to do the same thing hours later.” Reign gave a nostalgic smile at the thought of home. She really did miss it. Shoveling snow would be ten times better than being trapped here. “Anyone you left back at home?”

she hadn’t meant to laugh, especially not as much as she had. her palm ran up her cheek, wiping away the stain left against her skin where her tears had fallen during the moment of guilty weakness. it wasn’t that reigns name was funny, but the hesitation and tone in which she had used to confine in her this little bit of information was priceless. while the laughing fit that tempted to come had subsided there was a smile stained to her expression that eliza couldn’t shake in her current, inebriated state. there was one thing eliza knew without a doubt despite the way her mind blurred and her rationality faded away. reign was, without a doubt, cute.
placing an elbow on the counter eliza leans against her arm, resting her head against her hand. she takes in the way the other slowly takes in her drink, wondering if she’d abandoned the idea of getting as close to black-out wasted as possible. or if she thought another approach would give better results. “oh come on, snow isn’t too bad. when people think of snow they think of such romantic things, like ... christmas morning and the snow falling. or seeing snow on the mountain top in some pretty, landscape picture.” eliza argues, musing over her thoughts as she tries to find the right words. “a lot of people like snow for a reason.”
she’s in her own world, attempting to compose another string of words together when reign speaks again. momentarily eliza had forgotten the other hadn’t asked a question, and as it weighed down on her eliza couldn’t help but glance away from the other as her thoughts shifted. “well, we’ve all left someone behind. family, i guess, but no one too special.” she shifts a bit in her seat as her words fall to silence, blurred haze revealing things she’d always ignore. if this was a night of confessions than she guessed it was a better time than any to finally voice something she kept locked up.
“honestly, this has been the most fun i’ve had in a long time. being trapped in this game ... it’s frightening but, it makes you feel alive doesn’t it?” she brings her head up as she talks, leaning her arm down against the counter where her hand takes the glass nearest to her. too many people hated it here; too many people had lost or left someone behind because of this game. it was an unpopular opinion to say the least, and eliza knew it. before reign could talk eliza brought the glass down onto the counter, cutting the silence with the noise and the approach of another npc and another filled glass. “weird, right? it’ll probably pass, i’m sure.” she spoke, straining laughter as she brought the drink to her lips. she wanted to make sure she didn’t remember tonight. “what about you, did you leave someone back home? a little sweetheart who calls you their little snowflake.”

She had heard her mother speak about her name the same way Eliza was now. How people loved snow for a reason and she was going about viewing her name all wrong. How the kids who teased her in class meant well and whenever someone thought about snow, it was always the pleasant side of it; snow falling and dusting the landscape in a blanket of white, children laughing and playing outside because school closed for the day, Christmas morning-- yes, her mother had told her all the things that snow meant and why she was named after it. Something gentle and exciting.
But she had been burned way too many times for her to take pleasure and pride in her name. It was why she preferred to go by Reign, after something strong like royalty. She didn’t want to be some delicate little snowflake that someone had to protect.
Reign stopped her musings, wondering if the alcohol was making her a lot more thoughtful and bitter tonight. She had never been a depressive drunk and she definitely didn’t want to start tonight. Eliza didn’t deserve to hear about her childhood drama and daddy issues. She wanted to have fun with the other woman but her idea of fun didn’t involve her drunkenly rambling out some sob story.
She finished the rest of her drink as she listened to what the other was saying, pausing at the hesitance and small confession she admitted. Her hand placed the empty glass on the counter and turned to stare, her eyes focusing in on the woman beside her. She wasn’t expecting her to say that but… “I get it.” She admitted as well, leaning her elbow against the counter so she could rest her head on her arms. She was still looking at the other, her thoughts getting a little hazy but her mind still clear enough to get them out. “It is weird but I’m just as weird for seeing it. I’ll admit, I’m terrified of dying and this wasn’t my idea of spare time when I bought the game. But…being here has made me realize that I’m a lot braver than I am back home.” Her voice trailed off, staring at Eliza for a few more seconds before sitting back up in her chair. She definitely wasn’t drunk enough yet to talk about her issues.
Her eyes zeroed in on her empty glass and frowned, taking note that the bartender was attending to someone else. With a small shrug, she reached over and took Eliza’s hand, brushing against her fingers as she loosened the hold on the glass of alcohol. With a smirk, she took the glass back and winked at the other, bringing the glass to her lips and downing it back. “Also if anyone called me their little snowflake, I would punch them in their throat. I don’t have anyone like that though. Just family. My mom is probably worried sick. She would kill me if she knew I was running headfirst into getting myself killed.”

someone didn’t need to be smart to know that enjoying this new, forced life wasn’t the most proper mindset. everyone had been jailed away in this virtual world, and seeing it as a paradise over a prison was crazy. like a stockholm syndrome victim falling in love with their captor eliza was smitten by this new life, amazed by how she had changed from the woman in the real world to who she was now. it was as though she was someone completely new; and with it, eliza wasn’t sure she’d want to go back to her old identity if given the choice.
her fingers drum against the glass she holds, rhythmic dull sounds coming from her attempt to focus on something other than the slipped confession. she hadn’t thought such a simple question would have triggered such a thing in her; nor open a door to where she’d sit at a bar, too gone to really regret her choices, spewing unfavorable opinions to a woman she barely knew personally. but most of all eliza hadn’t thought someone else would understand.
in her drunken haze eliza could feel herself stare, unable to do much else let alone turn away. she had, for the most part, expected an awkward response. something forced, in the same way someone would answer another when words failed them but polite conversation deemed them to respond regardless. yet reign had found her words and with it caught her by surprise.
she realizes her silence as she notices reign reach over. then, soon after, it comes to her that she’s been gawking at the woman for far too long. it’s when she feels the other's hands brush against hers that eliza finally brings her gaze to something else. or, more specifically, the glass of alcohol being taken from her. eliza's eyes follow it as reign takes the drink into her possession, frowning at the wink given before slowly letting her expression fall to a pout.
“i think i get a free pass to call you snowflake since you just stole my drink,” she starts, glaring down at her now empty glass in reigns hands. her gaze lingers for a second, but when it returns her expression softens. her pout spreads into a small smirk, leaning her body a little closer to reign so her lowered voice may be heard over the noise of the party around them. “but i’ll make sure to keep it in private, that way you don’t have to punch me because people heard my little nickname for you.”

Reign wasn’t one to judge anyone. She didn’t have the right to. Everyone had their own issues and shit in their lives they dealt with. And life had thrown everyone here a curve ball of an issue. There were some players who were scared and wanted to go home. There were some who didn’t care either way. And then there were those who were starting to embrace this new life. It wasn’t like this world was a terrible place. They had everything provided for them here plus the bonus of abilities that were beyond human limits. If she were back home, there was no way she would be able to carry around a greatsword. There was no way Eliza would be able to travel back in time for a few seconds. Despite the looming threat, everything in this game was amazing.
But for her personally, she wanted to go home. There was still too much she needed to do back in the real world for her to stay here in the game. Gargantua wasn’t worth the look on her mother’s face if she had to lay her daughter to rest. “Maybe I am a depressing drunk…” She mumbled to herself and stared at the empty glass in her hand. She hoped that hangovers weren’t a thing in the game.
Her depression episode was soon broken when she felt the other woman lean her body against hers. She jumped a little and turned to look at Eliza in surprise, not expecting the closeness or bodily contact at all. A breathless laughter left her at the comment about the nickname, rolling her eyes and turning her face to look at the woman. The contact was surprising but not unwelcome. “In private? We never meet when we’re in private.” Reign teased and didn’t move away, instead raising an eyebrow in amusement. “Unless we plan on meeting like this more often. It would be nice to talk more without getting attacked by monsters and we’re not about to pass out on the bar.”

liquor made her bold and this new found self within this game was even bolder than before. it’s what made her tease reign the way that she did, or at least hoped to have come out despite her current, drunken state. she had wanted fun and excitement during this mundane ball and she had found it within the woman at her side. it was surprising and odd to think such company, of a person she barely even knew, would make up for such a boring night.
she hadn’t meant to get as close as she had, but the further she leaned towards reign the quicker she forgot to stop. it was only when she felt her body touch hers that it registered what had happened, and by that time eliza couldn’t care to pull back. the other, while surprised by her closeness, hadn’t moved away, and when she noticed the way reign eyed her words she couldn’t help but grin. the other's words made her pause, words caught in her throat as she felt her teeth bite at her lip under her smile.
“i’d like to. we could continue our little game. we haven’t even started getting to the fun part,” she begins after a long moment of silence. “and i want to get answers i know i’ll remember the next morning.” there’s a hint of excitement in her tone that eliza can’t quite place nor hide as she speaks, eyes focused solely on reign at she stays, too close, to the other. with how the night was heading the ball would be too populated by players eliza would surely forget the moment she left, and with how much alcohol she’d already consumed prior to finding reign in the crowd; it was all going to be a blur. except, she thinks, for her time at the bar.
“why don’t we save our little game for another night. i don’t want you getting shy on me and choose not to answer something i might ask.” with that eliza reaches over, pulling away from reign to give them both some distance. her hands finds reigns and, instead of stealing the glass back, keeps them placed over the others. “for now, let's get you a little more drunk.” she teases, moving reigns hands to knock the glass against the table before pulling away. “unless you think you can’t handle it…”
