Rai swore every game has to have called at least one of their monsters the stupidest name they could ever think of. Not that he could blame them though, since they'd probably have worse names if it had been him in charge. And here he was, taking care of such monsters that had been blessed with glorious names such as Tatroz and Zortat. Pushing the thoughts from the convention of naming away, he didn't care much what they were called as long as they gave rewards.
He already had been halfway there by the time he realized that fighting it alone was a terrible idea. Squatting on the ground on one of the cavern's corridors, he set out an invite for anyone who could be interested in taking the duo with him. He wasn't picky with whoever he gets paired up with, but he did hope that it was someone who could carry him throughout the ordeal. With his torch planted on the ground, he set his eyes to watch the direction he came from. No, he wasn't going to go meet them at the entrance when he already walked all the way here.
// open to anyone! bounty

he had seen the man go in ahead of him. ten hadn't been trying to pry, not really, but the yellow streaks in the man's hair were hard to not pay attention to; and, he had been heading into the cavern alone; and, ten had, admittedly, been looking for a distraction to take him away from the hand-wringing, sweaty-palm anxiety that came with making big decisions such as whether or not to charge headfirst into danger and possible death.
so, when the invite came, he wasn't entirely surprised. the apprehension, however, hit him like a brick to the sternum. he wanted the pride of taking a bounty, but.
he pulled up the chat interface, keying in the message with just-barely shaking fingers.
utility. unpredictable rng moveset. ok?
if the man said yes, he would accept the invite. until then -- ten took a deep breath, lit his lamp, and took a hesitant step forward. if he said no, ten would turn back. he could turn back. he would probably turn back. the man would say no, and he would have to turn back.
just around the bend, something glowed dimly -- a lamp, set into the ground beside a squatting figure.
ten swallowed, the sound bouncing across the claustrophobic, narrow walls of the cavern, unnaturally loud. it was too late to turn back.

The notification from receiving a message turned his attention away from the tunnel entrance. Opening a screen on his interface, he started reading the contents and ending up with a brow raised. Was the sender unsure of himself that he had to send something like this before accepting an open invitation? With eyes on the screen, he started typing away a response: don't care. attacker. passive-only moveset. ok? On the contrary, his passive skills made him too predictable in a sense. This 'Ten' guy wasn't the only one with an unreliable class if he had to compare it with his.
Sounds came from the direction where he came from. The source wasn't visible by any means, though Rai was certain where it came from. If it wasn't his ears, his eyes could clearly tell the dim lights by the distance. With the darkness of the caverns, even the smallest of sparks were visible. "Oi, don't go 'round sneakin' on me like that," he called from a distance, stretching his limbs and carrying the torch he had on the ground. Hearing his loud words reverberating across the walls, he quickly wished he hadn't yelled.
Rai pulled a knife and thrown it in the general direction. He still wasn't sure if it was a trash mob from this place or simply the guy he was waiting for. Regardless, it wasn't bad to be too careful he supposed.
// Ten . dont worry. we can just treat this like a normal thread if we don't reach it by then lol

his message notification dinged, metaphorical gates slamming behind him. ten pulled it up:
don't care. attacker. passive-only mo--
a sudden shout reverberated across the cavern walls -- the only warning ten got before a flash of light emerged from the dark, flames glinting off metal. a dagger, mid-flight. it was an obviously haphazard throw, aimed nowhere near his vitals -- but it was still a knife aimed well enough to do some damage. there was no time to shut his display; with his vision still half-obscured by his screen, ten sidestepped. the dagger clanged against the wall behind him, clattering to the floor. ten winced; it was as if cavern soaked up sound and threw it back amplified tenfold. his ears rang.
he shut the message window and took a few steps forward, lamp held out. the shadows faded away. before him, stood the man he had passed at the entrance to the cavern, tensed for a fight. ten thumbed at the prayer beads looped around his neck, weapon at the ready -- even though they hadn't even seen hide nor hair of what they were actually supposed to fight yet.
"we're off to a great start," ten said, swallowing back the quaver in his voice. no turning back, now. "do you greet everyone like that, or am i just special?"

And from the corner came another player instead of a monster. "Oh, sorry about that then." At least that was better than getting ambushed in the dark. Placing the knife on his hand back where it came from, he started fiddling with the user interface once more and sent a party invite to Ten. He wasn't even sure if it was required even, considering being in a party provided no actual benefits in a short venture such as this. Technically, it simply was a reflex from playing other games before. Ultimately, it didn't really matter.
"Yeah, maybe I like numbers, snowflake. Besides..." Quickly drawing his free hand to his pocket, he threw a knife straight at Ten in one swift motion. "It doesn't hurt, right?" Players cannot hurt players anyways outside of PvP after all, though he wasn't sure if others could also feel the tingling sensation brought by the electricity on his weapons.
Heavy footsteps were heard from the other side of the corridor opposite of where Ten came from. Rai turned his attention away from the utility player towards the other end, squinting his eyes to try as he raised his torch to light up more of the area and try to decipher the shapes within the darkness, but to no avail. "You haven't brought friends along with you, right?" Since it came from that side, surely that wasn't supposed to be another player.

another ding. ten pulled up the interface again, and accepted the resent party invite -- right before he saw another glint of light. seriously? the dagger was too close, there was no time to sidestep. he tugged on one end of the prayer beads, and sent it whipping outwards; it caught on the dagger mid-arc, batting it into the wall. the metallic ring of dagger against stone bounced around them, loud -- and only then did rai's words settle in his head. a wry smile played across ten's lips; he'd forgotten that damage from other players was restricted to pvp. the rules of all the games he'd played before this one had coalesced into a mess inside his head. not that he could play any of them anymore. not while he was still stuck here.
and, still, a knife in the shoulder didn't make for the best of introductions, even if it turned out to be merely ornamental. "neither does bathing yourself in mud, or so they say. i'm not too keen on that, either."
he trailed off at the sound of a distant thud. thud. thud. it was growing closer. too heavy to be an average player; and, at any rate, from the wrong direction. he joined rai in lifting up his torch; he could barely see anything past the shadows, the path ahead a swath of dark. he could hear something, though: two joined breaths, inhaling, exhaling, louder with every successive thud. their ruckus must have drawn something towards them; two breaths -- probably, the bounty. he ran his hand along his prayer beads again, checking for tangled, hoping the dark hid how his fingers trembled.
"oh, no, i just thought i'd introduce you to my fiancé. my fiancés," ten said dryly, sounding calmer than he felt. no tangles. everything in place. he'll be fine. they'll be fine. he took a deep breath. and and snapped the prayer beads outwards; it cracked like a whip, the sound like thunder in the cavern. something - things - roared in reply. not too far, now.
"let's hope your trigger-happiness proves useful. any plans?"

His expressionless face broke into a a smirk as Ten deflected the knife he threw. From Ten's reaction, Rai could deduce that he'd either forgotten about the mechanic or just didn't take jokes well, though the situation eventually led to the former. He didn't seem to be too offended by his actions at least as well. That shouldn't be where his attention should be though.
Present matters forced him to set his sights to the darkness, where they'll be meeting up with their target. Judging from the rumbles from that direction, it was a given that it wasn't simply some trash mob and was something more major. He did not expect to fight that thing within the narrow corridors of the caverns when he arrived though. With Ten lighting up the way beside him, Rai decided to throw his torch straight forward, revealing the pair they were supposed to subjugate. "That's my plan."
As soon as the light showed the rider and its mount, the pair started charging up straight. A huff of discomfort could be heard coming from Rai as he started throwing his knives at the overgrown lizard. It hit it once or twice, Rai couldn't tell, but it certainly wasn't slowing down. Fortunately, they had distance to close before it reaches them. "Looks like being trigger happy isn't useful. I hope we won't die." He turned to face Ten before asking, "Got any tricks with that RNG moveset you have?"

of course. of course, his first strategy was to charge headfirst into battle. ten didn't know what else he expected from a man who threw two knives at him at their first meeting.
"i hope we won't die," ten repeated, matching rai word-for-word, right down to his tone of voice. "what an inspiring way to start the battle. i'm overflowing with confidence."
the lizard and his rider were barrelling straight down towards them; it was still out of range of his beads, but close enough that there wasn't much time left to react, or -- in the claustrophobic space of the cavern -- much room to. keeping his eyes on the approaching duo, ten waved his hand, a deck of cards sliding out of his sleeve.
"tricks, yes. guaranteed success rate, no." what stellar advertising; it was no wonder that guilds were all fighting for a piece of him. "i might give both of them a random status ailment when they get within range, or nothing at all. feeling lucky?"
his playstyle had been fun to experiment with, at first, but not every party member he encountered was pleased with the skillset he provided; skills that relied entirely on luck tended to get in the way of proper strategy, after all.
but, rai did say that he didn't mind, at first; and he didn't seem like the sort to come up with detailed, drawn out strategies, either. the lizard was too close -- almost within range now. ten swallowed down his instinctive flight reaction, fingers spasming over the deck. he called, loud enough for rai to hear over the monster's thudding footsteps. "drawing! one, two -- " the lizard was almost within range, too close for comfort. he tugged at the top card of the deck. " -- three."
he dove to the side, just barely dodging the lizard's forward scramble. the card fell loose. he flipped it up, angling it such that rai could see it as well.

Rai wasn't exactly the luckiest out there, considering he had been trapped in this game with no way out. A class like Ten's probably won't fit him well. On the other hand, Ten's case may not be as unfortunate as him if it pushed him enough to convince himself to take a risky class. "Sure, go ahead. It's not like we'll lose anything." They could lose their life, but Rai was confident enough to at least keep himself alive by the end of this. Defeating the bounty on the other hand, not so much.
For a moment, he stopped attacking the lizard. His eyes were trained on Ten as he drew his card, dodging the rider duo's attack who had their attention on the utility player. The card did not make sense for the Capacitor as no effect happened afterwards. Whether it failed entirely or just had a delayed effect, he wasn't sure, but Rai took action as soon as the situation got too dangerous for his liking. Knives were thrown on the lizard's eyes the moment Ten drew his card. It won't be enough to kill, but it was enough distraction for Rai to step forward and touch the lizard with his right palm.
Sure, the mount was stunned and immobilized for a duration thanks to a passive skill of his, though Rai did not take the rider into account when its lance pierced through his shoulder. "Tsk, let's back off for a while. Try that thing again." With his hand covering his wound, he took a few steps backwards before running for a corner somewhere along the corridor. The lizard duo has to slow down by taking a turn as opposed to running in a straight line. "What's that card thing supposed to do anyways?" he asked.

he made a mental note to thank rai later; he had acted fast, drawing the lizard's attention with his daggers while ten regathered his wits. and, then, between blinks, rai had darted forward -- what is he doing? that's way too close. -- to brush his right hand against the lizard, the rider's lance had stabbed forward into his shoulder -- and the lizard had stopped moving.
he tailed rai into the corner, half-skidding around the bend. "not yet. i'm locked out." bits of data swirled blinked around the deck in his hand, the cards in it shuffling automatically. "the draw succeeds if the card turns up upright. a fifty-fifty chance." just like their fifty-fifty chance of taking this bounty, he supposed. guilt settled low in his gut. the hit to rai's shoulder had looked bad. pain here was muted, sure, but pain was pain.
"i'm going to tangle the rider and his lance with my beads. it might give you a window for a few safe hits until i can draw again." it was a gamble -- there was a chance it wouldn't work, but it was worth a shot. behind them, he heard echoing thunder of the lizard's footsteps; rai's quick thinking and the bend had put some distance between both duos, but it was catching up. he had to act fast.
ten ignored the sirens sounding in his head and changed direction, swerving back towards the lizard. the rider had its lance out, like it was jousting. perfect.
he ducked out of a swipe from the lizard, cringing as it clipped him in the side, and whipped the prayer beads in a wide arc. it hit his target with a rattle. bracing himself against the ground, he tugged. his feet slid forward, bringing him uncomfortably close to the lizard -- but the beads had wound around the lance and the rider's torso, shortening its range for as long as he could maintain his grip.
"now!"

A few seconds was all it took for his self-capacitance skill to patch up his health to a comfortable range. He took his hands off from the wound as soon as pixels stopped leaking from it and readied his hands back to his weapon. No matter how he assessed the situation, it was no doubt a position that they need to get away from. Running was obviously out of the equation when the enemy duo can easily outrun the two of them. Defeating it was the only option.
"Whatever works." Rai wasn't going to argue with Ten and would rather just go with Ten's suggestion. With a throwing knife on his hand, he followed behind as Ten went on and restrained the rider. Getting a signal from him, Rai threw his knives at the rider, nearly hitting Ten in the process. Even if it did, it wasn't like it'd affect him at all. Ten wasn't the only one to get into close range against the rider duo though, as Rai got close enough to stun the lizard once more with his left palm. With both it and its rider unable to combat them, possibilities opened up for the two of them.
The electric field around him finally triggered, jolting both Tatroz and Zortat for damage. With his free right hand, he took the knife he threw at the lizard and pierced it at the cavalier's wrist, weakening its grip with its lance. With Ten restraining it, he supposed he had too much freedom in this situation. "Guess we just beat them up at this point." As he spoke, another bolt of electricity came from Rai and went straight to the lizard once again. Pants could be heard from it at this point. Rai had been targeting it specifically after all.

the whiz of a knife by his ear made ten jump. it wouldn't hurt him even if it hit, he reminded himself -- but he couldn't hold back his instinctive flinch.
rai had darted forward, hand outstretched towards the lizard. ten blinked; his shoulder looked fine; and it had only been less than a minute. impressive passives, he thought to himself, unaware that he'd said it out loud as well.
"as opposed to sitting down for a tea party?" ten tugged hard, again, at the prayer beads. he could feel the rider straining to break free, but with his mount incapacitated, and his grip weakened, they would have the upper hand until the lizard broke free of its stun. but even then, it didn't look like it would last much longer -- it had been the recipient of relentless attacks from rai for the entire duration of the fight, and the focus fire had clearly taken its toll. ten winced in (misplaced) sympathy; he didn't envy it one bit.
"i'll hold down the rider for as long as possible. can you take the lizard out?" they could win this. he chanced a glance at the deck, stuffed halfway up his sleeve. pixels swirled on its surface -- and, then, stopped.
"drawing," ten called out, it took a bit of uncomfortable contorting, but he managed to turn the deck over, letting the first card flutter down, face-up, to the floor.

Rai scoffed at the idea of getting impressed with his passive skills. They were useful, yeah, sure, but they weren't going to be relied upon on when push comes to shove. He'd rather have a skill that goes with a bang that could decide the tides of a battle rather than a bunch of passives. Then again, he didn't mind it so long as they kept him alive.
"Yeah. Gotta know more about your fiancés, y'know," he jeered back at the sarcastic comment. Ten was still grappling against the rider with his beads, stopping it from taking any sudden movements. The lizard on the other hand was on the verge of exploding into pixels. Another hit or two and the mount would soon meet its demise. Rai's hands went in a quick motion to his pocket once again, retrieving another set of throwing knives to do the job. "Well, since you asked so nicely..." Taking a step back, he threw them at Zortat's hide, resulting with the lizard leaving nothing but pixels in its place.
With the mount supporting it disappearing, the rider fell into the ground with a thud. "Hey, your card thing didn't work again it seems," Rai mentioned, stating the obvious. "Looks like it's still alive. Wanna marry it before it dies?" A knife was readied on his hands, with Rai tossing it up in the air and catching it back as he waited for a response.

as the rider crashed to the floor, ten was very nearly pulled off his feet. stumbling a few steps forward, he let the line of beads grow slightly slack -- not enough for the rider to break free, but enough that he wouldn't go soaring halfway down the corridor.
"thank you for telling me that, there was no way i would have noticed," ten deadpanned. on the ground, the rider writhed, disoriented and desperate. "marriage in a dark, claustrophobic cavern, with flickering, dim lamplight? it's so romantic, i could just swoon."
the rider's struggling only managed to tangle the beads around itself further. the red string of fate? that would make this entire fight a shakespearan tragedy, really. very poetic. out of the corner of his eye, he watched the glint of rai's dagger soar up, then down, in a repetitive motion.
"thanks, by the way." rai had carried them through this, after all. if ten had been here alone, he'd probaby have been grinded into stew.

Alone, the rider did not pose a threat to the duo anymore. Weak and defenseless, it did not put up a fight anymore after its mount died. Perhaps it accepted its death knowing that it had no chance of survival after its lizard vanished from its sight, if it had any. The only thing to do now was to end it all. This was an act of kindness all things considered. Rai wasn't cold-hearted enough to keep the two from meeting in the after life. The knife on Rai's hand went to the rider's throat, killing it instantly.
"And done."
With the rider disappearing into pixels as well, Rai was left alone in the corridor with Ten. The torch he brought earlier to navigate through the interconnecting tunnels of the caverns died when he threw it to provoke the rider pair. A huff of regret could be heard from Rai, staring at the other player knowing he couldn't navigate his way back alone. "Maybe you could try escorting me back to the entrance for that. I, uh, don't have spare torches." He did not mind asking for petty favors such as this. Ten did sound like Rai had done him a favor after all.
