shizuka gave cat a nod, shifting herself close to him. the moment that she did, a force field was put up around them, protecting them from the assault. the small monsters were thrown back violently, deterring the rest from even trying their luck. the fate weaver hummed, using the chance to assess the battle field. it had changed dramatically since they first entered giving them more information on their opponent. they had held out and slowly wore down the monster, biding their time. she felt confident that they had the means to end the battle.
"when you first attacked the monster up close," she started, "the outer layer of ice was not hard, was it?" depending on his answer, there was a way out. "with a little more power, your spear may be able to pierce through it completely." she paused, glancing up at the health bar that was now drained down nearly to the red. "I can provide you with that power -- if you wish. It will take some time to cast it and for that reason, I leave our safety in your hands." the woman pushed back her sleeve to reveal her wooden arm and from her fingers, drew out the same ropes of red. they twisted and twirled from her finger tips, working themselves onto the spear head of catharsis' weapon.
"it isn't ready yet, but it will be. fix your eyes on the queen and her young for now." they had one chance and she was aware, feeling her mana nearly drain to the last drop.

LOVE ME LIKE AN ENEMY The pulse came and went like waves lapping at the sand in the beach, but it was enough. With each heartbeat, any of the small devourers brave enough to try to come forward were denied, knocked back just as quickly. He could keep them at bay, but his energy levels dropped the longer he sustained the field. They did not have forever, and that left Catharsis stressed enough for the both of them. Whereas he saw no way out, however, Izanami seemed to have a plan. He stared blankly at her, before glancing back. The devourer had had a strong outer plate - past tense. The force he'd used and the angle he'd had in his last strike had left her with a soft point. While he had done quite a bit of damage then, if he were able to hit her there again - yeah, he could see where she was going there. He nodded, glancing at her. It'd be risky to get in that close again, but he should be able to do it with her help, if she could pull off the same trick as before. "It's worth a shot." He said, his heartbeat beginning to accelerate and the pulses mirroring the output. He just needed to make sure the barrier kept up until she was able to cast her spell. Deciding to put his faith in whatever her ability was, he tried to calm down as he watched the threads wrap around the blade of the weapon. He felt it when his summon finally came apart, the rush of the simulation coming back to him. Not nearly as much as it might have been with more than one other as company, sure, but it was palpable. "She'll be headed our way right about now." He hissed, growing tense. Hopefully, she was about done; he couldn't tell unless she told him.

"it's done," she announced, staring back at her work with an approving smile. the spear was now reinforced with her threads, increasing it's sharpness and durability. looking up from the weapon, she made note of catharsis' warning. the devourer was on the move again, pushing aside it's young as it rushed in, jaws snapping. the miniature creatures were trampled upon and for the ones that survived, they ran along side with her. "animal instinct?" the utility mused. the devourer looked desperate to end them almost as if it had felt death's loving touch.
with a single senbon needle, the woman helped herself to pricking the player next to her, embedding the thin tip into him. "this will restore your stamina and grant you a small increase to your evasion and speed," she explained. "i will do my best to clear the way for you." facing the devourer with cold eyes, shizuka sat her self down with her legs folded under her. the snow bothered her, but did not detract from her concentration. "she'll want to kill one of us and if i am the easiest target, she won't attack you just yet."
the fate weaver let out a breath, eyes closed with her hands held together in her lap. "didn't i tell you that worry will age you quicker? go on." the woman smiled. she was not worried; from what she had seen, this man was capable. upon opening her eyes, shizuka prepared herself to do as she had promised. two smaller pups lunged at her, baring fangs threatening to kill her and before they could touch her, she had subdued them with two strands of red, knocking the two together. the creatures disappeared quickly into a scatter of pixels leaving no other to protect the queen.

LOVE ME LIKE AN ENEMY It was done, and Catharsis shifted the weapon in his hands. It still felt as light as usual, but he could swear he could see the buff actually sharpen the blade. Even though they were both utilities, it gave him actual hope that they might be okay. When the woman pricked him with something, he winced and spared a glance down where the senbon poked out of him, more than a little alarmed. When she explained and he saw that his energy had grown, though, he relaxed. Even without the speed and evasion buffs, that on its own would have bought his loyalty. Izanami had basically just done the equivalent of feeding him while he was starving. The repulsion field had just been about to falter and fail, at which point they would've been swarmed by the oncoming hoard surrounding the charging queen. Instead, she had just bought them a few more much needed moments. When she went ahead and knelt, it shook something in him. There was confidence, but he was left uncertain if she understood the gravity of the situation. What if she just didn't know that this monster could actually kill her. Sure enough, the devourer turned her head towards the prone woman, racing towards her, but Catharsis didn't wait. The moment she was close enough, he gambled on hitting her right in the same chink in her armored plate, lunging forward and driving the spear home. Even as it was his attack, he knew it wasn't his luck. That didn't make him falter, as he twisted the spear and lunged further forward. He could take a hit or two, he had already decided, if it came to that. This needed to end now, a desperation in the air, and the Empath wasn't sure if it belonged to him or the Devourer. Either way, he managed to do something right with the boosts from Izanami, a fact proven when the monster leaned too far into him as if slumping. His boots were pushed back into the snow with the force of her weight, just before she burst into pixels and all of her spawn disappeared with her. He panted before he caught his breath, a shaking hand letting the spear steady him as he glanced down at the woman - if she was even still sitting. "We did it." He said, trying not to sound as surprised as he was, considering they had come up against something he'd never even faced before. "Do you need any healing? You're pretty good at this." He asked, still coming down off of the adrenaline. He glanced towards the loot that had appeared in the snow, motioning towards it. "We should probably get our rewards while we can, if you aren't hurt."

within her mind, she thought of nothing else but hot tea as she watched the other utility do some work. with her end of the job completed, shizuka stayed put deciding that it was for the best. with no mana left, there was nothing else for her to do, but entrust the task of slaying the monster to catharsis. he didn't disappoint. the spear was driven in the exact spot that it had once before, going in much deeper this time. with a twist, the devourer disappeared, breaking up into pixels and dropping several unknown items into the snow in the place it was slain.
standing up, shizuka brushed off the snow from her kimono as she approached the young man. she chuckled at the words, 'we did it' almost sure she had heard a hint of disbelief in them. "yes we did," she confirmed with a chipper tone. holding out a hand in front of her, she shook her head, "it's not necessary, thank you." her health was practically unscathed from the boss fight; that wasn't to say it was entirely easy. "shogi," shizuka repeated, bending over to pick at her earnings, "is like chess. know the limits of your allies and foes -- use them -- and achieve victory. that is what my class is and i'll have you know, i was quite good at shogi."
