shizuka did not move from where she stood, eyes fixated on the way down. the darkness was deep and threatened to envelop even the smallest traces of light. that wouldn't do. she did not turn to look at her companion, sure that he was already searching for an alternative. there wasn't much she could do to help, but stand watch over the hellish hole. if their enemies should come in swarms, a warning would be more than enough to help catharsis escape. she did not worry about herself.
her head finally turned to take a look at the empath's find, lips curving up in approval. "yes, that would do just fine." it was only then that she moved to make her way into the tunnel. it was lucky that it was just barely wide enough to allow the two to walk together again without leaving one following behind. "we should leave immediately; before they realize we were here." she did not stop to wait for him, he could easily catch up when ready. all she could see ahead was a bright light that looked too good to be true.
"a light at the end of the tunnel...how convenient."

GIVE ME ALL YOUR ENERGY LOVE ME LIKE AN ENEMY It seemed what he'd picked, as unexplored as it had been, had turned out to be the preferable option to the bats. Good enough for him. The moment she started to move, he considered himself freed. It wasn't at all hard to catch up with the woman, his long legs carrying him far. It was no sweat, and Cat let a hand slide to the back of his neck, briefly. She seemed pleased by the change in plans, so that'd be enough. Now that he was matching pace with her, he let his gaze flick up and ahead when she mentioned the light. She was right; it looked like this was going to end into a well-lit room of some sort. "We should still be careful," He said, voice soft. It was probalby a worthless reminder, but it was just as much to himself as to the newcomer. If he let his guard down, they'd both probably be in trouble. Just to make sure, he switched Gungnir to the hand farthest from her, checking the weight of the spear. It always amazed him just how lightweight it was for him; he'd never been particularly strong. Looking up ahead, he tried to get a better picture of what was in front, but no luck thus far.

"We should still be careful."
This brought a smirk to the woman's face. How many times has she heard that in her life? Did it truly ever do her any good to 'be careful'? Not really. "Being guarded can only do so much. As long as you've got a good head on your shoulders, nothing can do you harm," she said. It was how she lived her life and so far, it proved effective. If anything, she knew that being too careful could lead into paranoia and excessive stress. "You'll grow old if you worry too much," she laughed, shaking her head. Shizuka was rambling now that they were getting close.
The light was becoming blinding as they had gotten closer and closer to the mouth of the tunnel. The Fate Weaver winced, holding up the sleeve of her kimono to shield her eyes. The crunch of snow had come back to her, seizing her senses again as she quickened her steps to leave the brightness. The first step outside drew out a soft gasp from her as the light had faded down in intensity, allowing her lower her arm. The unfamiliar room was a dead-end.
"Does this mean we should return?" she asked. Despite not wanting to, if they had to, she would go. Looking over her shoulder, she eyed the path back. The moment she blinked, the entrance was there no longer. "I see that it's answered it for us."

GIVE ME ALL YOUR ENERGY LOVE ME LIKE AN ENEMY Considering that Catharsis lived and breathed paranoia, expecting even people who were friendly to him to betray him eventually, the woman's words were jarring. Worry had kept him safe, kept him ready to dodge or run when he might not have survived otherwise. The Empath wondered what type of person it took for confidence to actually work out for them instead of biting them in the ass. She was either very lucky, or had the strength to back herself up. Something about how dissonant that seemed with his first impression appealed to him, so he decided on a whim to go with the latter. It was good to have role models, and all that. "I thought getting to grow old was kind of the point?" He asked, glancing over at her with curiosity. He had to admit, it was nice being able to do that as opposed to craning his neck over his shoulder every time he wanted to speak. He frowned as his eyes adjusted to see a blank room. He paused, not stepping forward for fear of traps, and glancing over his shoulder when she said something about going back. He didn't even blink when the place they just came from was no longer there. The mapping in this dungeon was a good half of the death trap. Had he had energy to spare, he would've put up a barrier between them and the rest of the room, but he didn't. Instead, he glanced forward ahead of himself, not at all comforted by the fact that he didn't see enemies right away. "There might be a pitfall trap here. I've run into those before." He warned, explaining why he wasn't moving forward. "Maybe if I just ..." He set out to test it, scraping the edge of the spear through the snow in the ground in front of him, half certain he'd just wind up tripping a different kind of trap.

shizuka did not say anything when catharsis had decided to hesitate, not moving deeper into the center of the room. he knew this place better than her and would know the best methods to approach it. if there was a secret escape some place, she was sure that he would find it. in the meantime, she focused her attention on the room itself. knowledge was everything and here in this room was nothing, but mounds of snow left untouched. the room itself was dome-like with curved walls and a circular base trapping them inside with nowhere to go. it was also rather small as she was able to see the other side of the room quite easily from where she stood.
looking down for a brief second, she watched as catharsis busied himself with his spear. the mention of a pitfall trap had her frown deeply; unamused by tricks. shizuka did not mind battles nor puzzles so long as she was given some options to work with in order to achieve victory. pitfall traps were... simplistic in design and entirely made to kill players instantly. it was a wonder how the other utility managed to survive one. either he was lucky or crafty; she hoped he was the latter.
the fate weaver stirred as the room started to...snow. she extended a hand outside the safety of her umbrella to touch at the falling flakes. now that was an odd development. looking towards the center of the room, her eyes narrowed at a sudden appearance of a mysterious figure. this left her with some discomfort. how did they not hear it? she tapped a finger on her partner's shoulder to alert him of a new enemy -- a boss.

GIVE ME ALL YOUR ENERGY LOVE ME LIKE AN ENEMY Catharsis tensed slightly at the uninvited touch, but relaxed once he realized it was her and not ... well, a threat. Following her eyes, he winced as he realized with a sinking feeling that he didn't recognize this monster. The great beast towered over them, eyeing them with a hunger that chilled him to his core. There was something about this that was considerably worse than the time he had found himself right on top of Scar. He was far less inclined to let the beast come close to him than he had been with the Wendigo, and he twirled his spear as he stepped away from the woman. Just his luck that he had assumed they'd be fine without a defender or attacker this time around. "I'll try to keep his focus, if you want." He offered, but there wasn't really any time to discuss. After all, it wasn't like the queen before them was about to wait patiently for her meals to come up with a battle plan. Getting a handle on his spear, he threw it like it was a javelin. It wasn't, but thanks to game mechanics it soared through the air all the same, making contact with the monster's flank. The ice covered creature turned towards him with a shriek that echoed off of the walls int he closed space, making him wince and cover his ears. It was only through force of will that he uncovered them to grab for Gungnir as it reappeared next to him, readying the spear for the next attack. Using his skills to attack was a no go; he could tell just looking at this thing that he needed to conserve his energy to keep healing abilities at the ready.

"that'd be lovely," shizuka replied absently, eyes still locked on the still white beast, unflinching in it's presence. it's eyes followed them as hers did with it. it was proficient in hunting -- that was clear. "hm." the fate weaver allowed her free hand to unravel the strings of fate as neither side dared to move. that was, until catharsis had openly attacked the creature with the spear that he had held in hand, flinging it. her eyebrows raised at the bold move, deciding to watch for now.
the spear head had hit it's mark easily, returning to catharsis almost immediately after it had done damage. the once quiet hunter was now enraged and in pain, howling up something wicked -- she was sure. it thrashed up the snow underneath it with such vigor that it had become something akin to a smokescreen. the snow that was falling before had grown heavier, obscuring her vision to the point of only being able to make out the harsh lines of the boss.
tsk.
the loud cries had stopped ushering in an eerie silence that was soon followed by high whistling. shizuka took a step forward to position herself right next to the red-haired male. her umbrella opened and held right in front of them as projectiles were rapidly fired in their direction. the beginner weapon held up well enough to block the attack that had lasted only a second. withdrawing it back revealed shards of ice littered on the snow around them.
"are you familiar with this one?" she questioned flatly.

GIVE ME ALL YOUR ENERGY LOVE ME LIKE AN ENEMY Honestly, if she had stayed where she was out of the monster's line of sight, he wouldn't have even questioned it. He had expected to be left to his own devices, torn between budgeting the energy for a barrier or trying to dodge. Garm barked by his side, but Catharsis ignored him and so did the boss; the pet was incapable of actually engaging in the fight or doing anything to defend him. When the woman stepped in, the Empath's entire plan for dealing with the devourer's wrath on his own was interrupted. No matter how many times it happened, he might never get used to the concept of someone stepping in to actually keep him safe for once. Usually, he could discard it just as quickly; of course they would defend him, he was a healer, but she didn't know anything about his abilities and for all he knew could heal herself just fine. It wasn't something he could dismiss or reconcile so easily, but there was no time to think about it anyway. "Thanks," He managed, but he shook his head as he drew his arm back to throw it again. There was, really, not much else he could do in the face of the giant ice monster. "No." He admitted once he'd thrown Gungnir, watching it soar through the air and already getting ready to grab it as soon as it materialized next to him. "I've never seen this one before." It seemed like the creature was fine trading volleys of ranged attacks, perhaps hoping to maim them before drawing closer. Looking at that jaw on the monster, he was fine with that.

"i see..." the woman's voice was soft, observing the spear disappear once more only to reappear in the man's hand. it dealt damage, but not much. "peculiar isn't it?" she left her words hang in the air briefly. "i have not seen a more passive hunter in my life," she spoke thoughtfully, her finger curled against her chin. "it is difficult to keep track of amidst the snow...are you following?" she grew quiet, threading her thoughts together. "if not for it, it is for...them!"
flicking her wrists, shizuka clutched tightly on three senbon needles placed between the spaces of her fingers, flinging them out in front of her. each one sinking into the bodies of three smaller creatures mid-pounce, administering a paralysis effect. the three smaller white beasts collapsed into the snow with a whine. her wooden hand hovered in front of her, unsure of what to do with the offspring of the queen exactly. the only thing she was sure of was that this, was not the end of the devourer's schemes merely a part of it.
"be quick, boy. she's coming."

GIVE ME ALL YOUR ENERGY LOVE ME LIKE AN ENEMY Must be nice to be able to use abilities, Catharsis thought when he finally caught sight of the woman's threads darting through the snow. Still, it didn't really distract from the fact that they'd nearly been ambushed, probably dragged right back to the mother for feeding if the little monsters had been able to overwhelm them in any way. Catharsis twirled his spear for a moment, casting a glance to the mother. She'd hunkered down, and was closer than when he had last set eyes on her, stalking through the snow ever closer. They didn't have much time, but he could turn her spies into offerings. Cat didn't waste time, stabbing into the closest of the smaller monsters with his spear. They weren't long strikes, and he wasn't trying to hit them with his hardest blow. Quick, fast strikes hit the paralyzed creatures, taking advantage of their space and drawing more energy from them with each hit, pixels draining away from their wounds and into the Empath. She told him to be quick, though, so so he wasted no time either. He was halfway through the last of the little monsters when he sensed the larger presence a little too close for comfort, and he wasted no more time, driving the spear deeper into the body than he had been and twisting it. He was no attacker, but the trash mob was weak and didn't withstand it. Now, he turned to face the monster only a few feet from them, too close for a barrier to be able to materialize before she stuck herself inside of it and shattered it. He adjusted the spear in his hand, using it to try to maintain a healthy distance from the monster now rather than throwing it away. He didn't like the way she raised her head to peer down at him, saliva dripping down into the snow in front of him. Even at his current armor and gear, he wasn't equipped to take the majority of her attention, but neither was she. One thing left to do, then. Catharsis took a step back, freeing a hand to cast chaotic manifestation. The spirit summoned wasted no time in darting forward and raking claws into the monster's flank. It was difficult, wanting the malevolent creature to draw most of the devourer's wrath, but not before it had at least paid him back for the energy cost. The monster turned to look to the summon, and just as quickly he sidestepped and lunged to attack the monster's other side.

shizuka's face was impassive when the empath had cleaned out the three beasts attached to the ends of her threads with ease. his movements looked to be clumsier than the average attacker, but he did do the job and did it right. it was something she hadn't expect from him, mainly due to his frail frame. looks can be deceiving and if anyone were to know that, it would be her. with the ethereal bonds doing their job, shizuka turned her focus onto their real target. like she had predicted, the hunter was on the move now.
heeding her warning, the other utility had done his best to fend off the charge with a barrier -- though cast too slowly. the woman frowned, coiling red strings around the beast's neck. she knew that try as she might, it would fail to strangle something so overwhelming strong and so, she settled with simply slowing it down. like a dog on a leash, the devourer snapped at the air, struggling to break free of the fate weaver's hold. a second after the empath's successful casting of his spell, the threads had snapped leaving the devourer to move freely once more. rather than target the red-haired male, it had focus on the malicious spirit, attacking it irritably as if to remove a flea from it's fur.
taking notice of catharsis reaching into close proximity of the monster, she did her best to limit it's options. three threads coiled tightly around it's massive jaw, shutting it closed. the other two threads wound themselves around the boss' front legs, tying them together temporarily. it wouldn't hold any longer than two seconds at best. "pierce it and get out," she spoke sharply.

GIVE ME ALL YOUR ENERGY LOVE ME LIKE AN ENEMY If Cat had noticed anything with the summon, it was that it cut him off from the typical simulation his class came with. Usually, that was a welcome relief even if it didn't make up for a loss in energy gain. In this situation, though, with this companion, it made hardly any difference. The woman's presence didn't bear down on him like most people. Had they been in any other situation, that would be a comfort. Here, it left him having to think far too much about what he could and couldn't do. He'd almost had to back off immediately when the monster took notice of him far too close for comfort, Gungnir barely grazing the thing. It wasn't surprising; he was a utility pushed into the position of acting like he was anything but, but excuses weren't going to save him. When ropes tied around the monster's jaw and legs, he relaxed but did not falter. Her words reached him, and where he might have resisted a different kind of stranger doling out orders, he responded to Izanami. He stepped into the opening, lunging straight for the monster's exposed chest with his spear. He didn't expect to kill the damn thing outright, but it actually chipped past the layer of ice and he saw pixels start to seep around the wound, so that was something. To pull the silver spear free, he had to shift his grip and twist it, wincing at the awful noise as metal scraped against hardened ice and he staggered back. She didn't have to tell him twice to make distance, watching as the strings seemed to strain against the weight of the thrashing queen and scrambling back. He didn't go much farther than Izanami was, though. She hadn't left him just yet, so he wouldn't, either.

there was a fine line of trust between them, making the fight flow much smoother than it would have otherwise. it was a problem that she encountered awhile back partying with other strangers. without the trust placed in her, she would have to constantly adjust her plans to fit those around her. with catharsis, she felt like there were some liberties that she could make without the boy hesitating to follow through. like she had hoped, he had gone in without a second thought, piercing the spear deep into the devourer's chest. she held firmly onto the strings while it thrashed, desperate to break free. she would not let go; not until the boy was safely returned.
the fate weaver smiled when catharsis had run back with spear in hand; just in time. the red threads did not hold together, the beast breaking free with new life. another roar echoed inside the enclosed room and from the heaps of snow, popped out more miniature devourers. troublesome. they lined up in a formation in front of the queen, reared back and ready to attack on order. as for the queen herself, she picked up one pup in her mouth, tossing it up into the air, snapping down on it. there was a dreadful crunch before her jaw had dropped open, shooting out shards of ice. as if on cue, the rest of the pack attacked simultaneously.

GIVE ME ALL YOUR ENERGY LOVE ME LIKE AN ENEMY Oh, there were suddenly a lot more of those anklebiters than Cat liked. He frowned, thinking fast. The summon was still alive, but not for long as soon as the boss monster could turn her undivided attention to it. That meant his energy supply was about to get a whole lot more limited. Cat was busy trying to calculate whether to outright attack or set up a barrier to buy them time, when the devourer went ahead and ate one of her own children. He winced. Now that was a little over the top. The devs would've deserved a strongly worded letter, had anyone actually been able to log out of the game to write one. The moment the small legion of miniature devourers charged, the Empath was fresh out of time to come up with a plan. When Izanami didn't give an order, he braced the spear in front of the both of them a sharp, "Stick close to me, okay?" Rounding the spear around, he activated the repulsion field, steady pulses in time with his own heartbeat knocking back any of the creatures that came too close. Some even turned tail and ran back to the mother, who as he had thought had finally been able to turn her full attention to the summon who was bound to dissipate into pixels at any moment now. He had no time to focus on the spirit's wellbeing. Instead, he drove the spear point home against any of the monsters who braved to come closer to him despite the occasional pulses that added a slow drain onto their health. Short, long strokes did the trick of feeding him more energy while maintaining a safe distance.
