The journey back seemed to take forever. They didn’t take a different route or do anything different on their way back to the town of origins. It was just...the awkward silence that sometimes passed between them. It was obvious the two of them wanted to say something, at least in Noel’s case, and that there was something wrong. Usually their conversations were filled with teasing and back and forth that made his stomach flutter; the small talk they shared between each other now just made him feel sick.
His failed attempts to get Theo to talk at the temple ended up backfiring on him and now he was at a loss. Noel wasn’t the talker; he didn’t know how to talk to people nor did he care to. But Theo was different and it was obvious that the other was suffering and wanted to keep quiet this time around. Or he didn’t want to bring up what was bothering him because of what would happen if he did. So Noel wanted to try to be that person Theo was to him, giving him the encouragement and reassurance he needed when something was obviously bothering him. But he had failed and now there was nothing he could do.
So Noel hadn’t said anything else about what happened after they left the tower. Instead he commented on things around the festival as they went to leave, trying to keep up the conversation even though all he wanted to do was scream. But it was the lull in their talks that made him feel worse, unable to keep himself out of his own thoughts or the guilt he felt over what happened. And as they entered their room that they’ve been sharing since the beginning of the game, Noel could almost feel the tiredness of the events that transpired creeping up on him.
“We have to go back there one day. I had a little fun with the games.” Noel was still holding the fish he won in his hands, staring into the bag with curiosity as he went to sit on one of the beds in the room. The fish he had gotten was weird and he refused to tell Theo how much money he had spent on the game. “Did you think of a name to call it? I’ll give you the honor.” It wasn’t the first thing he wanted to say, the words he wanted to say getting clogged up in his throat. Instead, he waved the fish in front of him as he looked at Theo with a teasing smile, watching to see if the other would give him something other than the forced smile they’ve been sharing since the raid. “I won’t change my mind so feel free to go crazy...but not too crazy.”

theo had tried to keep the conversations noel attempted to make stay for longer, however with each passing topic slowly scratching off the shortlist they both (surely) had made theo could feel himself always drift back to his own somber silence. there wasn’t a comfort in returning to his mind but his thoughts always welcomed him back with open arms and stabbing claws, digging themselves deeper until noel's voice brought his attention back for however long it lasted. it was a cycle that theo was exhausted with yet growing accustomed to in the most sickening of ways. there was a fear that lingered amongst the others, of a possibility of they never moving past whatever this was between them; and familiarity of their former selves growing faint with each passing minute they stay stuck in the holes they each made themselves. it from frightening to consider himself growing used to this silence and burning in his lungs each time his breath caught to drag whatever words that begged to come out back down to the pit of his stomach; but the thought seemed as close to a reality as the day he nearly watched noel die before he could even make it to his side. while the trip back to the town of origins (and, lastly, back to the small room in which they called home for the term of their imprisonment) had been slow, everything -- eventually -- had to come to an end. noel was the first to step within the space and, as he feet prompted him to follow, theo (for the first time tonight) felt a wave of relief wash against his posture at the walls that boxed them in. he had never felt the same anxiety as noel and, while wanting to go home, had taken their new found world in stride the best he could; but now the outside world seemed menacing. even surrounding himself with festive lights and dulled cheers had created a sense of fear that creeped up every so often. “yeah, we should. we didn’t get to see everything … next time we can.” theo ensures, biting back the apology that hangs on his tongue. while they both had not felt up to socializing theo could feel the guilt nipping away at him as the words came out. noel had (at least) tried to make the night fun but theo hadn’t budged, and instead continued to selfishly return back to the silence the other was so desperately trying to pull him out of. it’s the motion of the bag held within noel's hand that catches his eyes and snaps him away from the awkward silence he had -- unknowingly -- fallen back into. his head tilts ever so slightly, catching sight of the distorted view of noel's eyes watching him through the water just before the fish swims between them, breaking their vision. theos hands react faster than his thoughts and, slowly, he reaches out to take the small plastic bag from the others possession; and when he does theo holds it in the palm of his hand, eyes trained on the fish inside. it’s something to distract himself from staring at noel with the same pained look he knows he’s been giving him -- and each time the fish moves to another direction it brings theos attention to somewhere other than those clinging fears. a name doesn’t come easy and, while theo carefully sits beside the other on the bed, he realizes that he’ll be keeping noel waiting for something that’ll never come. “i … i don’t know what to call him. her? but i’ll think of something and i’ll tell you.” theo starts, still holding the small bag in his hands. “it’ll probably be crazy though, just warning you. i … don’t think i’ve ever really named a pet, so i get a free pass to call this little guy anything i want.”

Noel noticed the way their eyes caught as he held up the bag to Theo, waiting to see if he would do or say anything. He wasn’t expecting anything since Theo had made it clear to him that he didn’t want to talk yet. But at the very least, he knew Theo could see that he was willing to continue on and not bring it up again. However their contact was broken by the fish swimming between them and Noel felt a little disappointment go through him. He didn’t expect Theo to reach out and take the fish from his hands to stare at it. It gave Noel the chance to stare himself, his eyes torn between watching the fish to distract himself and watching Theo to relieve his fears.
He knew he should back off a little and try to give Theo his space. But it was hard to push down the fears he has about their predicament. He kept telling himself that it would work out and that this wouldn’t last forever. They would have to force themselves to talk to each other one day. But there was that tiny fear that crept into his mind each time he saw Theo’s forced smile or sad expression whenever he thought he wasn’t looking. It hurt to see him like that when he knew that he could do something to help. But he didn’t know what to say or do in order to alleviate Theo’s guilt and fears. He just didn’t know what to do. And as Theo walked over and sat next to him on the bed, Noel felt his stomach flip inside his body. He would try his best to keep quiet about it, push everything he wants to say back until Theo was ready to talk. Because this wasn’t just about him, what he wanted, and what would make him feel better. It was about Theo. Everything that he did now was about him.
“I haven’t named a pet either. Well unless you want to count the goldfish I had when I was four that died a day later.” Noel remembered himself crying to his parents as they held a small funeral for the fish in the bathroom. He had even flushed the toilet and watched it go down the drain. “But we don’t have to worry about this one dying anytime soon.” His body moved on its own, moving closer to Theo to where their arms were brushing and leaning down to reach for the fish bag. He carefully untied the bag while it was in Theo’s hands and released the fish, watching it suddenly float into the air around them as if it were swimming. He glanced up at Theo and gave him a teasing smile, moving away a little but still close enough to touch if one of them moved just a little. “Take your time. It’s not going anywhere and it’s too cute to get rid of I guess.” Noel had thought about giving it away, he really did. “Kind of like me right?” It was natural for him to slip into teasing Theo, even when something was troubling him. Theo had that effect on him, making it easy for him to be childish and playful instead of trying to be the adult he desperately has to be. And he wanted to show that despite what was going on, he didn’t think of Theo any differently and that nothing for him had changed. At least that’s what he was trying to tell himself.

for a long moment theo hadn’t realized how physically close he had gotten to noel upon sitting beside him on the bed. it had come almost naturally to invade the other's personal space without so much as a second thought that, when done, theo didn’t think twice on it even with his current state of mind. he had been too focused -- too preoccupied -- with the small bundle of code within his palm to not notice anything else around him; or at least, not enough to let his mind stray away from what his eyes were trained on. the goldfish noel had won during their short lived trip to the festival was cute enough to warrant some thought into a nickname, however the longer theo wondered the more his mind wandered to whether he had gotten a fish similar to this as a child. he doubted it -- which had been the reason behind his small comment about naming a pet -- and with that it made him realize just how many things he had yet to experience; and how the majority of them were being done because of noel. at the start of noel's voice theo slowly raises his head to the sound, eyes suddenly trained on the blonde beside him as he speaks, leaning over against him to do something to the bag in his hands that theo ignores. he’s too caught up in just how easy it is for his attention to be caught by noel, and how difficult he finds it to tear his eyes away. it’s startling in a strange way, twisted in comfort and a feeling of home that theo can only get when around noel ---- and in a small moment theo wonders, briefly, what he’d ever do without him. he notices how noel's eyes are trained on something else and, even when the fish begins to swim in the air around them, theo only watches as noel’s attention finally returns his. that teasing smile causes theo's face to avert away, realizing -- quite suddenly -- how long he's been staring in silence. the realization of his obvious moment and the bag, untied and free from what had held his attention prior, is as startling as the thoughts that plagued him just a moment ago. it takes theo a second to process the teasing comment noel gives to him, glancing back over to the boy at his side before finally grinning back. “you can’t just steal my line like that, it’s not very cute.” theo says, mocking the same tone noel had just given to him the best he can. he had put noel through so much tonight that, at least, this small mimic of their usual back and forth games would be enough to show the other he was sorry. “well, maybe i shouldn’t say that. you still are pretty cute.” his words come slow off his tongue, leaning against noel to cut whatever little distance had been made between them away until their arms touched. before the other can speak theo opens his mouth again to cut him off, however as the words hang from his tongue his eyes finally catch sight of the small goldfish, swimming behind noel and around them both. he hadn’t really noticed it before, or if he had the sight had been pushed away by something -- someone -- far more important. his words change and with them theo smiles, partially amused and curious at the question that comes to mind. “so, how much money did you spend on the fish?” theo asks, pulling back slightly to watch as the pet finds a small path between them to swim through. “or, should i not ask?”

“I know I am.” Noel instantly said back, smiling as Theo leaned against his arm. He hoped his small joke would do something to bring Theo back to their normal conversations. Even if they never talked about what happened, he wanted them to continue teasing and laughing with one another. He wanted to let Theo know that nothing had changed between them, that even though they might fight, it was still easy to fall back into one another like nothing had ever happened.
His eyes watched as Theo got distracted by something behind him, leaving him to stare at the other without any worry. It was easy to get distracted by Theo, having it happen to him far more often that he wanted to admit. The close proximity to each other didn’t help matters either, leaving him to openly trace the his features and wanting nothing more than to lean closer and close the distance between them. It was hard to push down his feelings, brushing off Theo’s flirting tendencies, and accepting them as something that was purely Theo and nothing else. But even he couldn’t deny that there was something there that they had yet to talk about, something that had been going on even before the start of the game. And as he watched the smile form on Theo’s mouth at something he was about to say, Noel felt his eyes linger a little too long there, wishing that he had the courage to finally do something he had been wishing for a very long time.
It was Theo’s voice that caused him to snap his eyes up, hoping that the other had been too distracted by the fish that was now moving between them. Theo moved back to give it room and Noel followed suit, not wanting to be so close after his little moment of weakness. Instead, he chose to pout, glaring as Theo called him out on his many attempts at the fishing game. “Don’t even ask.” He groaned out and fell back against the sheets of the bed, staring angrily at the fish swimming closer now that he’s shifted. Raising a hand into the air, he watched the pet float near and brush against his fingers, only to change course and swim back to Theo. “I kept trying because I was getting the same fish. This one was the only one that was different. Stupid carnival game…” It was just like any other carnival game that kept taking your money in order to win. They were designed that way in order to make it hard for people to win and keep throwing their money in when they were either ‘so close’ or ‘you have to pay more in order to win the big prize’. He refused to admit that he had been a part of the fish scooping scam. “I guess I’ll keep it since you’ll name it and all.”
Noel dropped his hand back down and turned to look up at the ceiling, staring at it like it was the thing that made him waste his money. Resting on the bed made him realize just how tired he was. It wasn’t the exhaustion one felt normally when they did strenuous activities. It was the one where he wanted to close his eyes and sleep for days without waking. It made sense considering all that went on with the two of them the past couple of days. The raid, the awkward silences, the festival, and the journey back had left him more exhausted than he had felt in a long time. But something was pushing him to stay awake, at least for now. Noel didn’t even realize he had closed his eyes until he was opening them to look over at Theo. “Remember when we first came in the game, we ended up sharing a bed cause I was terrified?” He didn’t know why he was remembering it now of all times or where it had come from. But it was a memory that Noel held with him since he got here, knowing that during that time, Theo had helped him more than he ever could imagine.

there’s a feeling, so small yet capable of capturing theo attention, pulling at the corner of his lips at the sound of noel's voice -- it’s nature, like everything else the other brings out of him, and theo is left giving into the urge. after all the trouble he's caused for noel within the past few days it’s hard for theo to allow himself such a luxury though, ultimately, he understands that doing so will help noel in the long run -- and so, he smiles. it doesn’t reach his eyes, his body still strained, still on edge and frozen in items as noel moves just a few inches away from him and onto the bed. the guilt is was keeps his nerves wired and his mind cloudy, drifting every so often to dark thoughts he’s done nothing but wallow in since the raid. it’s what blocks the smile spread on his lips from feeling as genuine as it should be; and it’s what makes him believe he shouldn’t even pretend. why should he smile if he had been the cause for noels distress? it was a question theo couldn’t find the answer to and, each time it was thought, oddly enough seemed to be voiced by someone familiar. his father, or perhaps his mother -- their voices sounded the same in his head; riddled in disappointment and contempt. they could always see the flaws in him, even when theo himself thought he’d done well to mask them. he guesses that’s where he gets this mindset from ; or maybe it was just another problem his parents had yet to pick out before he left. he welcomed the silence between noel's words as much as he clung to voice that pulled him out of his thoughts. it helped to imagine the other staring at one of the many stands that had riddled the festival grounds that night, watching as the fish swam just below the surface, taunting to be captured all the while hiding their willpower to stay living within their small tank. he should have joined him in that game -- maybe than noel would have had a better time. he should have done a lot of things than that he didn’t do. this may have been a whole other world entirely but some things never changed. he could do these amazing things -- call upon weapons in the blink of an eye, enchant a sword with fire with just a simple bead … yet he couldn’t do what mattered most. even now theo stayed silent, just barely turning on the bed to watch as the fish swam through the air, brushing against the hand noel held up to greet it. there had always been so many things he wanted to say, but he was scared. of the rejection -- of losing noel -- or realizing that he never really had a chance to begin with. “i remember,” theo says, just barely able to push the words out of his mouth. it’s not a welcoming thought to reminisce on the day they all got trapped in this game; but it’s something that could never be forgotten. the faces of all those panicked people around them didn’t compare to that of the other, pulled away from the crowd to somewhere as quiet as this room. “i was terrified too,” he reassures, eyes drifting from the strange little pet and to the boy laid back on the bed beside him. “even if you hadn’t been scared i probably would have dragged you into the bed with me anyway.” there’s a small hint of a grin resting on his features, his shoulders lifting in a simple shrug once their eyes meet for a moment. “i always tried to get you to sleep with me before. figures it’d take us both getting trapped in a video game for my chance to finally come, huh.” he’d always tried many things -- opened so many doors and given too many hints for theo to remember. it was what fueled the thoughts that nothing would ever start between them, yet, he still continued, pushed to keep trying. there were days he thought that maybe, just maybe, there was a chance; or, perhaps, he was getting better at lying to himself. “why do you ask?”

Fatigue was creeping into his body a lot quicker than he would have wanted. Stress was a contributing factor to why he suddenly felt so tired. The raid, his inability to relieve theo’s guilt, his failed attempts at talking, and the memory of his mother...it was a lot easier to think about everything in their tiny room where it was small but familiar. It was the reason why he randomly changed the subject on theo, watching as the other just barely started to push the words out on the touchy topic. Once again his eyes naturally fell to theo, watching the way he spoke and teased him in such a natural way that it left Noel slightly jealous. Theo was a lot stronger than him.
“I don’t think you’re thinking about the same ‘sleeping with you’ that I am. Or maybe you are...” Noel whispered to Theo, staring up at the other with a small grin on his face. The atmosphere was a lot more intimate than he had planned for it to be, unable to stop the softness in his voice as spoke to the other. It was teasing like this that made him question whether or not Theo was making fun of him or if he was serious. Theo did seem genuine about things when it came to him, his actual meanings hidden behind light teasing and flirtatious comments. In a way, Noel wished he would come right out and say it to him so he wouldn’t be left with doubts. He didn’t want to dive in and feel like a fool when Theo took everything back. He knew he wouldn’t. He knew Theo better than that. But it didn’t hide the lingering fear that everything they shared between them would be gone because he was impatient. If life had taught him anything, it was patience; he would wait for however long it took for theo to come to him.
It was Theo’s prompting that brought him back to reality, turning his gaze away from Theo and back to the ceiling. He honestly didn’t know why he brought it up so suddenly. “I don’t know.” He started and slowly drifted his eyes around the room from where he could see. “I think I’m just tired.” He finally turned his attention to the other bed only a few feet from where he was laying. For a few seconds he didn’t say anything, staring at the covers on the other bed. It was the same one they had shared for the first few days in the game; Noel holding onto Theo tightly and hiding his face while Theo talked to him the entire time. And despite Theo’s fears, he still somehow put his feelings first. “You know…” Noel began, ripping his eyes away from the bed and back towards the one person he wanted to talk to more than anyone else. “You were terrified too but you still put your feelings aside and comforted me instead.”
It wasn’t what he wanted to say but the words were still stumbling out, something lingering at the tip of his tongue that still wouldn’t come out. But he was never one to shy away from telling him how much he appreciated Theo for all that he did for him. “I was really selfish. I didn’t do anything to help you when you were just as afraid as me. I was worried about myself and wondering if I would have died,” Memories of a woman with blonde hair came into his mind causing a lump to appear in his throat. “Or that you were going to disappear in front of me too. I wouldn’t have been able to do this without you.” he probably said it a hundred times by now but each time was different for him. He wanted Theo to hear it as many times as he needed to. “I’m sorry…”

it’s in the way that noel looks at him, eyes wide and hardened far too much for his age -- still, despite all that, holding a gleam within the color that’s bright; gentle but strong. those very eyes keep theo mesmerized, holding a power that could keep him rooted for days simply staring in awe; and he’s sure that there still would be more things left hidden within them that would remain a mystery. in all honesty, there are far too many things that theo finds so intriguing about the other; but, he guesses, that all stems from finally finding someone to connect to. he's been alone; noel knows this. he’s accepted it. to be a child living in a home where it’s made quite clear that they’re unwelcome makes it hard for them to find a place. it’s even harder when that child grows up to realize just how unhealthy it is to stay. there had always been people in his life, each coming and going as they pleased with little to no protest. he had been okay during those days. life was hard, he understood that more than anyone. so, when the time came for someone to find their comfort somewhere else, theo was fine to let go. but, than he met noel. he got to know him, confined in him; realize just how similar they were in the worst of ways -- and, for the first time, theo felt as though someone in this crazy world understood. it’s why theo would fight to keep the other by his side no matter the relationship they were in. because, that’s what made noel so important (or, really, one of the reasons why). because, that’s why he would protect him (though, he had been given a chance and failed). because, that’s why noel was his (something one sided, he guesses). theo feels his fingers inch across the sheets of the bed at the whispered voice being spoken through the silence. it was alluring, temptation dripping in a tone that so easily took his attention and molded him into whatever it wished. it was moments like these that made theo wonder -- that brought him back to a worn-thin hope -- that noel felt the same way about him. noel understood him better than anyone so, maybe, he had read all those hints from before. just maybe … there was something. it’s noel's voice again that brings him back from his thoughts of false hope and silent, wishful thinking; of images of him gaining enough courage to bring his body down beside the other, fingers running through the strands of hair that fell beside noel's face. this is reality, theo thinks, as his eyes try to find noels again -- only to see them trained on something else in the room rather than him. a sinking, familiar feeling falls in his chest that quickly fades with the words that leave noels lips. stop. hes heard this all before. “you weren’t selfish and don’t … don’t go and apologizing over it either. you don’t give yourself enough credit. you helped me, more times than i can remember.” theo started, unable to find the right words in that moment. what he settles for doesn’t suffice for everything else still hanging off the tip of his tongue, bit back by clouded thoughts and exhaustion of the days prior. “you wanna know what scared me the most that day?” theo asked, silence settling after his final words for a second. he doesn’t wait for him to answer nor does he want him to; theo wanted noel to listen, nothing more. “seeing you panic like that … that’s what scared me the most. it wasn’t the fact that we were stuck in this game or that we could die any second. it was seeing you get brought to that point … that made me worry.” he shifted slightly from where he sat, head brought down -- turned in a way to hide the expression stilled on his face. there were a lot of memories theo hated to remember and this was one of them. “i wasn’t sure if i could help you before, though … i guess i should have known you’d be okay. you’re stronger than that. plus, it’s not like i didn’t think that too … i thought about what would happen if i left you here by yourself or if …” his voice trails. a thought of bright light, a burn that spreads through his nerves and the feeling of his body slamming into the ground. voices; muffled -- calling out for help amongst the orders to attack and defend those hurt around them. he remembers a name, placed right above a bar of life that quickly depleted down to red until there was nothing to be seen but a small sliver of what was once there. “if … you know,” theo continues, unable to say the words aloud. fear hugs his throat, choking him -- burning his lungs between every syllable. “i couldn’t go back. not by myself.”

He had been so selfish. He wasn’t sure why it was suddenly occurring to him now of all times. Maybe it was the familiarity of their room and the growing pressure within him to say something to theo, anything to relieve the obvious problem between them. It was easier to talk here with no one around, just the two of them alone. The room brought back memories of the first night where he was shaking so bad that he couldn’t sleep and all that came from outside were cries and screams. It wasn’t fair to Theo that he had to be the one to listen to him try and catch his breath and mumble about his mother. And despite what Theo was saying, how he was more concerned about Noel during that time, he knew that they should have been there for each other.
Not Theo being there for him.
But the memories here weren’t all bad. There were days where all they did was laugh and talk until late in the night. There were days where Noel was the first to awaken and he would turn to see Theo’s sleeping face only a few feet away from him. It was those mornings that he would sit and wait for the other to awaken, glancing every so often at his face and focusing on the features he had come to love. Their tiny room nestled deep within the town of origins is where Noel knew he could open up and talk to Theo, wanting nothing more than to ease his worries and fears. Because in spite of the bitter memories of their first encounter in the game, they were overlapped by everything Theo was and did.
Hearing what Theo said made no difference in the way he felt about him; he already decided ages ago that he wasn’t going to let him go. It was noel’s own selfish wish and desire. “I don’t think you give yourself enough credit either.” Noel saw Theo turn away from him and face towards the ground. “You’ve helped me so much, even before we got stuck here.” He had grew up way too fast, accepting years ago that his life was just going to be filled with working his ass off to get by and a father who could barely look at his face. It had been that way for a long time before Theo showed up. And it was by chance that he happened to be working one day and theo waltzed into his life. Ever since then, his days were filled with a spark that he thought was lost years before. “You did more than help me.”
He slowly sat up from his position on the bed, staring at theo’s back for a few seconds. Slowly, he reached over and leaned his head against Theo’s back, wrapping his arms around his waist in a tight hug. His hands gripped at Theo’s clothes gently so the other had no choice but to stay there until he heard what he had to say. But he knew Theo wouldn’t leave. He never did. “I wouldn’t be able to go back by myself either. I can’t go back to that now that I met you.” He didn’t want to imagine going back to the life he had before this. He wouldn’t be able to take it. He pressed his face deeper into theo’s back, gripping him just a little tighter. They had almost lost each other; the close call with Otohime made them realize just how easy it was. “This game has done some crazy shit to us but,” he couldn’t ignore all the good things that had come from this game. There were too many good memories between them for him to just brush away. “it helped me realize how much i need you. And how much you need me.” He didn’t need a life or death situation like the game to help him realize that but it did. And he was going to work with what cards he was dealt the best way he knew how. With Theo “I’m not going to leave you. Even some crazy dragon won’t get in my way.” Slowly he brought his head up and placed it on Theo’s shoulder, nudging his face into the side of his head like Theo had done so many times to him before. The familiar action caused a smile to appear on his face, knowing that the other would know exactly where he got it from. “Just like you promised you wouldn’t leave me right?”

it felt strange to talk this much after so long of keeping things between them silent. while it may not have been that long, for theo it felt like an eternity. he had always been the talkative one out of the two; ready to fill whatever silence with some unnecessary, flirtatious comment or sudden topic that came to mind. it was in his nature. he was social at heart despite whatever teachings his parents tried to instill in him; maybe it was his rebellious nature that made him such a social butterfly. however, despite the cause, it had been what pushed him to talk to noel the day they first met -- and why, even after that, he shoved his way into the other's life. there were a lot of things theo wanted noel to understand as he talked. he wanted to tell him that their mindsets were similar, that his fear was the same as his. he wanted noel to realize he wasn’t selfish for being so scared back then -- and, most of all, theo wanted noel to understand that he was here for him. even if he couldn’t protect him like he should; even if he had lead him to a situation that nearly killed them both; and, when he shouldn’t deserve to be around noel after all of it, he was still here. if only noel knew just how selfish he was. he feels the sensation of movement on the bed and, before he can turn to glance back, theo is caught within noels arms, wrapped and submerged within his voice. something crawls just under his skin, heating his face and causing his heart to race. it takes a courageous push of will for theo to bring his hand up, tentatively touching the others that grip at his clothes as though to keep him stilled on the bed. his eyes avert away at the mention of noel being unable to leave without him, as though the other could see the guilt taking over his face (and the hidden relief in those words under the surface). but, it’s the mention of otohime that hits him the hardest -- leaving his breath to slowly seep from his lips until there was nothing left within his lungs. theo loved this; and, at another time, would have surely been the one to initiate such an intimate expression of concern. it was when noel took the lead to do something like this and say such things that made him feel more important than anyone else in the world -- it fueled his hope, made him needy for the attention the other gave. but, right now, all it did was make theo even more concerned that his thoughts would be too easy to read. “noel,” the name falls from his tongue, lower than he intended but still so easily heard amongst the silence of the room. the familiar nudge of the others head against his -- so playful, something that’s too much like himself than the other but fitting painfully well; it makes him smile despite the words awaiting to be said aloud. instinctively he nudges back ever so slightly, bring his head down just enough to where there’s a sense of comfort in the thought that maybe noel couldn’t see his eyes. “that day… you know that was my fault, right?” he asks, knowing noel will say no and hating the thought all together. “when we went to the raid… i was the reason we went and if i hadn’t been so cocky you wouldn’t have nearly--” his voice drops again. it's the pain that pulses in his chest and the thought of the boy he could never get out of his head disappearing before he could even reach him. “... died. you almost died because of me. i don’t even have a way to heal you in this game, yet i told you to go attack that thing like it wasn’t killing people already.” it was hard to say the word. it came out strained and stuttered against a fault in his breathing that he could only blame on the same pain that continued since he started to talk. he wanted to stay silent. he wanted to not show noel just how weak he felt; but, once the other's name had dripped from his tongue, it was over. “i’m sorry.”

Noel already knew how Theo felt before he even spoke. It had been obvious how guilty the other felt about what happened at the raid. It was his whole reason for trying to talk to Theo and help ease his worries. But as his friend spoke and he listened, knowing what was coming… it didn’t make it hurt any less. Noel continued leaning against him and holding on tight as the words theo was holding back came forth. He wanted to cut him off and stop him from blaming himself for something that had been out of his control. It wasn’t his fault that any of this happened. He couldn’t, in any universe, fathom blaming Theo for something like this. But Noel knew he needed to be patient and let him talk. He wanted to hear everything that was bothering Theo. And he wanted nothing more than to reassure him that no matter what he thought, there was nothing they could have done to prepare themselves for what the game had in store.
“I didn’t know you were behind all of us getting trapped here.” Slowly, he sat back up and let go of his hold on the other. He sat for a moment and simply stared at Theo’s back without saying anything. Theo wasn’t the one who trapped them here. He didn’t invent the system that made them die when their health reached zero. No one had any control over this except the psycho who did it. With careful movements, Noel maneuvered himself off of the bed and stood in front of Theo, looking down at him with a small smile on his face. “If I had known, I would have gone to look for someone else to show off to everyone.” It was the memory of their day on the beach that brought a smile to his face; the way he looked at theo and teased him only to watch him get slightly flustered as he walked away. “I can’t exactly go up to someone and brag about you when you somehow managed to trap us here in the game. Mass murder takes away all your good qualities.”
It was light teasing but he knew he couldn’t keep it up for long. “Theo listen…” This is the moment he wanted and he wasn’t going to let it slip by. Slowly, he knelt to the ground so he was on his knees, kneeling in front of the other so he could be face to face with him. He made sure that the other was at least looking at him before he began. More than anything, he wanted Theo to listen and understand his next words. “I never blamed you for what happened. It was never your fault.” Shitty things happened without a reason; he’s learned to accept that. He spent so many years blaming himself for what happened to his mother that the guilt had been eating away at him. But theo taught him so much and helped heal the wound that were there. Because if it was Theo’s fault that he almost died, then it was his fault that his mother died. “Maybe I could have gotten the killing blow. Or maybe I could have saved someone’s life only for you to get jealous and say how I should only save you. There could have been so many things that could have happened while we were out there.”
Words were coming easier to him now the more he continued. Everything that had been bottled up was spilling out of his mouth. He wasn’t a talker nor did he know how to talk to people. Theo was the one who did this. He was the one who usually ranted at him until he couldn’t help but feel starstruck and in awe at how someone so amazing would take the time to help someone like him. But right now, Theo needed, more than anything, to listen to his words. “I don’t want to forget about how you helped me get rid of my fears. I don’t want to forget about our time at the beach or how excited you were when you saw me kill my first monster. I don’t want to just remember lying there, seeing my health drop, and the only thing I worried about was if you were okay. Because out of all the good memories I have in this godawful game, I won’t let one bad thing ruin it for us.”
There were too many memories he had of the two of them for him to just remember what happened with Otohime. He wanted Theo to remember the good things that happened in the game, even amongst the bad. He didn’t want to give up. “You believed in me and you knew I was just limiting myself because of my fears. All you’ve done, even before this game, is believe in me and I can’t blame you for that.” There was so much that he had done to push himself down. He had stopped going out, forced himself to work ungodly hours, and made himself think for years that everything that happened was his fault. But Theo was the first one to believe in him and make him think that there was a life outside of his fears and anxieties. Theo was the one person who gave him hope for the future.
Noel’s hands slowly raised and took Theo’s, interlacing their fingers and holding on tight. “I’m still here.” His eyes were focused on their hands now, his own holding the other’s in fear of Theo disappearing in front of him. “You’re still here.” It takes him a few seconds before he is able to rip his eyes away and look up at theo, hoping his words would somehow be able to help in some way. Even if the guilt didn’t go away or theo didn’t believe him, he would say it as many times as he needed to for him to understand. “We’re still here. And that’s all that matters to me.”

logically theo understood that, at some point, he’d need to voice his fears and new-found anxieties regarding the incidents of otohime eventually. though, illogically, he’d prefer it later than now. while the words fell and burned his throat as they approached one by one in a line theo wanted to stop; halting, mid-sentence, leaving noel to guess whatever else might be said all the while refusing to reveal anything else. it made him feel weak -- like everything (every word and disgusted look) his parents shouted at him when he was younger were true. theo didn’t feel like himself like this. he had never been silent nor fearful without good purpose; at least, not since he left his home and started a new, better life. this was how it felt to be twelve again; voiceless and worried of too many things out of his control, giving into whatever scenario or thought that came to mind until it was all he could think of. the words are dulled before him at the sensation of pressure leaving his back, making his mind -- every nerve that had sunk into the feeling of noel against him -- too sensitive at the lack of something so precious. it left him needy with a silent, small voice screaming for it to return, in sync with the drum of his heart that hurt far more than it should. he knew noel was still right beside him, coming over to his front to stare him down; yet, despite that knowledge, it was easy for him mind to twist it into something negative. in a second a simple repositioning had turned to noel leaving him within this small room alone, tired and frustrated at the pitiful self-pessimism theo had let slip. his imagination took no time to fill his thoughts with the idea of it; allowing theo to live his fears through his mind while noel spoke, teasing him in what seemed like a whole other world. there’s a subtle hint of a smile gracing his lips before noel kneels before him, swept as quickly away as theo closes his eyes, giving in to the scene playing behind them; pained as much to the idea of noel leaving as he is to the thought that he deserved the unwanted solitude. it takes theo a moment to realize the voice that was speaking to him had quieted and upon it his eyes open, finding noel to his knees in front of him. all he can muster is a confused expression that later falls apart as noel begins to talk once again; yet, this time, the words aren’t dulled. they pull his attention like they always had before, drawing him in until everything else around him falls to silence. in this moment seconds felt like minutes, yet even still it was never enough time. it all went by so slow yet too fast, sweeping away the world only to return it all back. theo wonders at what time his eyes had started to burn, his vision faltering unnoticed through the silence and bitten back words that held little to no importance to anything noel was saying. nothing compared; not the world past the closed doors and dim lights of the town nor anything past that. his fear ridden thoughts, soaked in illogical anxieties and nightmares -- oh, how they still were there -- but now they fell to the same silence all other noise did, lacking far less of a presence as the boy before him. the same one who took up his sights every day. the one who theo wished he’d known a long time ago. he blinks; but, as his eyes reopen again, theo isn’t sure when his attention had drifted down to where their hands now met, his own clung to by noels with that same sensation of their skin against one another that he’d craved when it was gone. however, the biggest question that raises in theo's mind, is when he had started to cry. he’d been silent throughout this whole time, so focused on noel and his words as though if, even for a second, if he’d look away or stray from them he’d disappear along with the room. he blinks again, attempting to stop the burning that comes with the next bit of tears that fill his eyes and stain his cheeks. it’s weird, embarrassing even, to sit before noel and be brought to this state right before his eyes; but even still theo can’t bring himself to turn away as noel looks back at him. “i-- i’m sorry …” it’s the first words that come out of his mouth. they’re strained and panicked, in the same way he would apologize as a child to his parents when he knew he had done something wrong. though, unlike than, he isn’t before his parents; two people who had wanted nothing to do with a child they’d made the mistake in keeping. it was noel right there, holding his hand wanting him here; but, old habits die hard, and theo can’t find the ability to stop the way he feels so rushed and scared as he continues. “i thought … we could do it that day in the raid. you were so amazing -- you are… you’re so much stronger than me. if i had been able to heal you or keep you safe it would have been different. you wouldn’t have almost died…” his hand grips noels as he speaks, squeezing it, keeping noel close to him in this one, small gesture, all the while trying -- hoping -- that it will ground him with the pressure. “i want to be as strong as you… i want to protect you as much as you protect me, and the one time you needed me the most i couldn’t do anything. i couldn’t even heal you when everything was over … all i could do was wait for someone else to bring your health back up.” he remembers the feeling; of how utterly useless he felt as someone called out for a healer to arrive and bring noels health back up to a decent level. it had been theos job to keep noel alive, yet he had no way to do it. “than i put you through so much because i was too afraid to even look you in the eye,” theo starts, unintentionally casting his eyes away from noel and to the floor noel had kneeled on to speak to him. “you had almost died and all i was doing was sulking in some corner. i made you take care of me when i should have been the one making sure you were okay … even tonight, i … i ruined it just because i wasn’t in the mood.” he feels like a child having to explain himself to someone who’d long since decided it wasn’t worth listening to. with each passing word theo has to remind himself that it’s noel he’s talking to; that noel cares, even when he’s as pathetic as this. if theo could ask for anything out of noel he’d want forgiveness for everything he’s put him through for the past through days; he knows noel will do it, but theo wonders if he deserves it. “i’m sorry for being like this … i’m sorry i put you through hell just because i was being selfish,” as theo speaks his words hitch in his throat, caught by a fault in his uneven breaths. his eyes still burn and the feeling of water rolling down his face hasn’t stopped; even when he closes his eyes tight in an attempt to push it all back. “i’m sorry i couldn’t protect you … i’m sorry … please,” forgive me. his words fall flat, silent; hushed by a low cry that escapes his lips and bite of his lip to keep any others from leaving. he didn’t want to make tonight any worse than it had, even if he knew this was necessary to move on.

It surprised Noel how much he had said within the last five minutes. He was never the one to talk to people or offer words of comfort. It was awkward for him to listen to someone tell them their life stories along with their problems on top of that. He could never put himself in their shoes and say what they needed to do to help themselves. He would rather focus on his own problems then trying to help someone else. But Theo was different. Theo was the same as him with a situation they both managed to escape...only to run into each other. Theo had opened up an escape from everything that had been going on in his life and more. It was easy to talk to him because they were similar and Theo was different from all the others. He was in a league of his own and it changed so many things for him. Noel could be vulnerable around him and it left him open and scared for Theo to learn everything. But Theo didn’t mind his faults and shortcomings, coming in like a tornado and sweeping him up for him to see.
Theo was different in every sense of the word. He wouldn’t do this to anyone else. He wouldn’t do this for anyone else. He wouldn’t kneel on the ground in front of them nor feel his heart break watching the tears come to their eyes. Theo was the only one to bring up all these emotions within him and lay them bare for all to see. Everything about Theo was different and he didn’t want anyone else. Everything he does and will do, it was all for him.
His hands raised to cup Theo’s cheek, brushing away the tears as quickly as the ran down his face. The words that poured out of Theo’s mouth continued to fill up their small room and wash over them as they faced each other. Theo’s words made him feel so small and weak, unable to form any response as the other pleaded and broke down in front of him. “Don’t cry…” Noel whispered, pleading as his hands wiped the other’s cheeks. He could feel his own eyes burning as he continued to listen but refused to let them fall. This wasn’t about him. None of this was about him. All of this was for Theo and nothing more. “I already told you.” He never wanted to see Theo cry, especially over something like this. “You have nothing to apologize for.”
Before Theo could say anything else, he moved forward and wrapped his arms around his neck, pulling him down to his position on the ground. He pressed as close as possible, his face burying itself into theo’s shoulder as he held the other in a tight embrace. “You’re an idiot.” He whispered into his shoulder as his hands clutched into the clothes on theo’s back. “Don’t apologize for something you had no control over.” Nothing that happened had been his fault. He couldn’t ever imagine placing the blame on Theo for whatever happened in the game. Nothing made sense in this strange world they were in but Noel didn’t care. He had accepted that as long as Theo was by his side, he would take whatever it threw at them. He didn’t want to hold them back anymore. He didn’t want to be afraid anymore.
“You’re way stronger than me. You were the one who kept us both going when all I did was curl up in a ball and cry. Don’t…” He slowly pulled away to look at Theo’s face, his body still within the other’s hold. His hands rose to cup theo’s cheeks to make him face him, a smile of disbelief coming to his face at the other’s words. “You’ve been nothing but strong so don’t say that.” Out of the two of them, it was Theo that had pushed them forward. It was Theo that had stood up while his anxiety almost crippled him to the floor. It was Theo who had held him and talked to him throughout the night as he tried to keep his focus on trying to catch his breath. It was Theo that pushed them out of the inn and into the town to explore all the game had to offer. It was Theo that saw the fun this game had to offer and tried to go forward the best way he knew how. Theo was always stronger than him. It was one of the things that attracted him to the other, following after him in an attempt to just be by his side. All he wanted to do was be by his side.
“God, Theo you don’t even know…” Noel’s hands slowly fell to Theo’s shoulders, gripping them as his eyes traced the other’s features. They were still too close, to the point where Noel could pick out the brown specks in his eyes and the lingering tears dried up on his cheeks. It was at the tip of his tongue, wanting nothing more than to spill out and reveal itself. His expression was vulnerable, afraid that the next thing he did was going to ruin what they had spent over a year building up. There was something there, Noel wasn’t blind to it. But he was afraid that their relationship would change due to what he would do. He needed Theo to show him. He needed show him that he wanted this too. There were so many hints, too many to count, but he needed to know for sure. “I don’t know what i should do.”

theo hadn’t meant to cry, nor had he meant to start rambling on about the sole reason why he’d put them both through a rather painful few days. but, hearing noel talk -- watching a boy who never was one to start a conversation so heavy as this -- it had unexpectedly took theo out of the rut he’d hidden himself in. honesty had never hurt theo as much as it did now. he’d been told the truth from day one. by his parents, by friends; by life in general. even by the same blonde haired boy sitting before him, reaching out to wipe the tears that stained his skin. honesty was good. however, this time around, honestly had forced theo to face his own inadequacy and mistakes.
he feels the pull of noels arms around his neck, stumbling him to his knees onto the floor with the other; and theo lets it happen, falling on command to noel's touch. there’s a bitter laugh that escapes his lips at the name he’s been called, wrapping his arms around the boys body to grip at his clothes as noel does to him. “i know,” he admits under his breath, closing his eyes once he leans his head against the others. “i’m sorry.” theo ignores the one thing noel has told him since he started to cry -- apologizing despite having doing so too many times in the past few minutes.
but he is sorry; for everything he's done.
theo quiets as noel talks, pulling himself away to cup his face and speak; and all he can do is stare into noel’s eyes, entranced by a voice he melts in. noel's words recall a memory theo hates. the first day they entered the game, getting trapped within it and noel, scared and panicked. it hurt to even remember. even more so after what he had done; dragging noel head first into such a dangerous situation. it’s only when theo feels noels hands find his shoulders, gripping them and bringing him back to reality that theo realizes he lost focus. he’d been too caught up in a memory, lulled into noel's words and the feeling of how close they were.
that hesitance he hears in noel sets a curiosity burning, sparking that same hope he’d always get when around him. in fleeting seconds where theo wonders if he’s the luckiest person in the world -- if, for a moment, he’ll be able to have something he’s been wanting for so long.
“what do you want to do?” theo chooses his words carefully, pushing away the hope still clinging to him; biting words that would make this whole endeavour far more awkward for noel than it already is. it’s uncharacteristic of him -- so much so that theo nearly laughs. a man so ready to say anything that crosses his mind brought to a point where he contemplated different options; if only noel knew. he’d call him an idiot just as fast as he had before.
“if i could cry in front of you, out of everything i should have did instead … you’re free to do anything.” his tone is light, contrasting the way he blinks away the last bits of tears still left from before. theo thinks for a second and, weakly, lets his false hope get the better of him. “you know there’s nothing you could do to make me upset.” it’s not the word he wants to use, nor is it as straightforward as he wants; but this was the game he played with his emotions. teetering on the edge of a cliff, unsure whether it’d be best to fall or stay. “i’ll always be here … if you can’t let me go after what i did, then you really are stuck with me.”

It was there right as the tip of his tongue. He knew what he wanted to say and do. The answer is his problem was right in front him, staring back into his eyes that were burning with curiosity. He knew what he wanted to do. Theo didn’t have to ask. His hands gripped theo’s clothes a little harder as the other talked, taking in his words and unable to keep the small smile off of his face despite his nerves getting the best of him. It was things he already knew; things theo told him hundreds of times and showed through his actions. No matter what Noel did, Theo was still going to be there with him.
“I don’t know. I made you cry just a minute ago. Does that count for being upset?” Noel reached his hand up and brushed away the last of the tears that were lingering on his eyes and cheeks. It was something he never wanted to see again but he knew that Theo needed to get it out. Theo’s guilt had lessened and that’s all that mattered to him. It was his next words that made Noel freeze again, his hands slowly falling back down to Theo’s shoulders. “I couldn’t let you go even if I tried.” the words came out naturally and unhesitating. There was no reason to think about it nor hesitate. They were stuck together now; they had been from the day they met.
They had been through so much together that he couldn’t picture a life without Theo in it. He didn’t want to imagine what it would have been like if Theo had not shown up that day in the restaurant, naturally flirting with him more and more as they continued to talk to one another. Noel would admit that he was exasperated by theo at first, unable to get his order without getting ten comments about how he looked. But as they continued talking, behind that confident persona, he found someone that was just like him. Both of their childhoods had forced them to grow up way too fast. And while Theo had chosen a life away from his past and enjoy what life had to offer, Noel had stayed, taking on too many burdens for one person to shoulder alone. But Theo provided him with an escape, had took him in and helped him get back to the way he was before everything had gone downhill. Theo had taught him how to smile again.
It was these reasons that he didn’t want to hold back anymore, wanting nothing more than to finally push this forward and not look back. He wasn’t as brave or confident like theo but he would push back all his fears for theo. Everything he did for over the past year had been for him. “Don’t hate me,” Noel whispered and leaned forward, wrapping his arms around Theo’s neck to hold him in place. He still had time to move away, to push him and tell him that everything he thought was wrong; that theo didn’t love noel like he did with theo. The hair on their foreheads brushed together as Noel rested his against Theo’s, looking one last time into his eyes before he gently closed them shut. “Please…” And with one last whisper, he closed the distance between them, pressing his lips against Theo’s in hopes that the one he wanted more than anything wanted him just as much.
