He loved that about her and at one point had tested it out extensively. No matter what he said to her, she would take it to heart and improve upon it. It didn't matter if it was constructive or not. This woman never stopped to become something much more beautiful and if not for that, he might have given up on her. It was one of her traits that he could surely say was a positive one. At least, in his eyes.
The Antagonist followed behind once more except, the wolf puppy was in between them. He frowned unsure how to feel about it. Should he have asked her to pick it up? He shook his head, letting himself walk at the same pace as the young dog. It was fine and after what Lethe had gone through, it was better to let her recover her happiness. He didn't want to dampen it too much in a day as past experience had taught him that it was the opposite of what he wanted.
He had made the mistake once and only once in their younger years. He had accidentally scolded her one too many times. As a result, the pitiful girl became unsure of every single movement, bothering him with questions on what to do and how to do it. In short, she was nothing but a servant afraid of angering her master. That wasn't what he wanted.
It was a miracle that she had recovered from that and since then, he made sure to be more careful with his words.
"What do you see ahead?" he called out, a hand cupped to the side of his mouth. The other hand was placed in his pocket as always. As much as he liked his knife, he made it a habit of storing it away after each battle. It got in the way otherwise.

lethe didn't really notice the little wolf pup trailing behind her, conveniently almost seeming to make a point of stepping between her and noir. even if she had been aware, she would've been sure it didn't mean anything. npc ai was fairly advanced, eerily so, but she wasn't sure if she would have said the same of the pet system or not. it would have meant nothing to her.
she held herself, telling herself that she simply still felt chilled after the encounter with the ice chameleon, and would be better soon once whatever effect she had been inflicted with wore off. after all, her armor was warm. even in this icy landscape of the dungeon path, she should be fine. once he asked her what she saw up ahead, she realized that he must not be able to see.
she had never been good at describing things, but she did her best. "there's a room up ahead," she announced. "i don't see any kind of door, just a clearing." she was still walking fairly slowly, more cautious than she had been in a while, hubris tempered just enough by the most recent encounter. she didn't ask if noir thought there might be more of the monsters; it felt like a stupid question. instead, she opened her inventory and finally retrieved her sword and shield. she should have done so from the beginning; she'd do better next time. "do you think we're close?" she asked instead, before pausing and realized she'd been rude in her panicked mess. "oh, and um. thank you for helping me back there." she said quickly, words fast although she didn't slow in her steps, not wanting to slow him down.

How cute, he thought happily. Lethe hadn't forgotten her manners even with her mental state a mess. He prided himself on how well behaved his woman was and she had yet to disappoint him. "You're welcome," he said in a light tone. He walked into the clear with her despite the awful description it was what it was: a clearing covered with snow. The Antagonist frowned at the heaps of snow, looking towards the pup bouncing around in it. Not so cold anymore, huh?
He strolled past the puppy to take a better look around, wondering if there was anything more to it. There was no exit that he could see and no other path for them to advance. This was it and whatever was in here, it would be the end all. Scratching at his dark hair, the male looked up in front of him, noticing a screen similar to the interface of their own menu. It was suspended over the snow like a mounted flat screen tv.
Was it going to display something significant?

lethe hadn't described the screen, because she wasn't sure if she was really seeing it. she shifted in her footing, but however she moved, it was in the same place in the distance. did that mean it wasn't a glitch in her ui? how strange ... it pulled all of her attention, the strange screen blinking 'congratulations' on it. it was cut off, as if frozen mid-scroll, but what else could 'congratulati' mean?
she frowned, drawing close to it.
"a glitch?" she asked, but she wasn't sure what else it could be. the screen flickered, but the word did not move. "how strange ..." her eyes were glued to it, unable to take in any of the other details of the clearing as she stepped forward once, and then again. she passed by noir to approach it, up until she stood just before it. it didn't hurt her eyes, but she couldn't figure out why it would be here.
maybe it was some kind of puzzle, and not a glitch at all? maybe if ...
she frowned, reaching out to touch it. the screen began to crackle, and then crack from the point at which she had touched it. what? she staggered back, drawing her shield up above her head in case it was some kind of trap, bracing for some kind of impact.

Richard scowled at the distasteful screen obviously mocking them. If the boss was so great, it should have shown itself without tricks. However, with the screen as a prop, he could only assume it was the doing of the system dev. Which meant one thing: they were here. Richard felt a chill run up his spine and it was not from the room. He was so lost in thought that he was too slow to notice Lethe doing something foolish again.
There was no yelling, no screaming at her to get away from the screen.
He didn't have the chance to when her touch had shattered it. It was the coming of something bad, real bad. He could feel it in the air and all around him; it made him nauseous to the core. Whatever Lethe freed...it was something that should have stayed locked in pandora's box. Fetching his knife to hand, he was prepared for the worst. There was no holding Lethe's hand through it now if this was the dev's set up.

she should have known better.
it was stupid, stupid, but the moment the screen ripped open the blast sent her back and the room ... changed? or perhaps it was just the air. it was only then that she heard it, and for a moment she thought it was all in her head, from the stress, memories flooding back to her and overpowering her senses. it was not. the growling rose to her ears and she whipped around to see they were surrounded by wolves. that wasn't fair, they hadn't even gone the same way as last time.
she remembered, then, that they hadn't been able to.
there was no hesitation this time, not even looking to see where the great scar was now, resurrected in a way that they would never be. she knew what to do, raising her sword and issuing a center of attention, drawing all of the attention of the wolves to herself as she raised her shield and prepared to be rushed. she had protected noir the first time. she wouldn't let them touch her friend this time, either.

His teeth gritted together when the screen's flash had changed their surroundings. It was like they were teleported back to Scar's den. Actually, they were. Richard recognized the sounds of the pack and among them a snarl. He could clearly identify the snarl as Scar's, but this time he was no where to be seen. Clever. It had learned from the last time and decided to be more offensive.
No choice.
Richard reluctantly decided to aid Lethe with the mob of wolves. He knew for a fact that he couldn't take on Scar alone. He needed her, his other half to be there with him at all times. Stabbing down on a wolf that stood in his way, the Antagonist fought his way to his Protagonist. The woman doing well not to get bitten this time around. There were more than he expected and one lunged right at him after he had destroyed one of it's kind.

she was surrounded, just like last time, and she was not afraid. last time, they had survived. it was easy for her to remember this, somehow, a cold calm overtaking her stressed mind. her movements slowed, but there was a thought behind each one as she activated chosen one, lashing out with a magical augmentation to each basic attack she struck out with. fearless, she cut down wolf after wolf.
there were so many. it felt as though each time she cut down two, three more dove in front of her to replace them. she glanced over her shoulder just in time to see noir kill one himself. he wasn't surrounded. scar wasn't behind him. he was going to be okay, and that meant she wasn't afraid. she frowned, realizing this was all probably because she'd failed some puzzle. she hated puzzles.
yelling, she lashed out, turning to face forward only to freeze as she turned just in time to see the great beast himself, standing atop a platform too far away for her to reach. he could pounce at any time he wished, and somehow she knew this. instead, he raised his head in a howl, and more wolves poured into the room. she raised her shield as one wolf clashed its full weight against her, having almost seemed to have the intellectual hope of knocking her off balance. she swept her sword to her other side, feeling the resistance as it collided with some wolves and met air as others dodged.
she looked up just as it seemed scar himself was about to pounce from above, raising her shield.

Richard was never the type to be easily impressed yet, Lethe earned it. Her movements were much more clear cut and fluid unlike last time. He smiled at the sight, turning himself around to slash the wolves in the throat for daring to pounce on him. These wolves were in his way. He wanted nothing more than to witness the epic battle in comfort. It didn't surprise him that he wasn't given the chance.
Looking up, he noticed Scar eyeing the pet wolf that Lethe owned. He couldn't tell if the AIs were intelligent enough to discern specifics. He ignored this and focused his attention on the swarm of mongrels flowing in. Using his skill, Shocking Betrayal, he forced a switch with Lethe even if she was prepared to guard. It was better this way.
In her place, he risked the aoe charm in hopes of buying them some opening to counter attack.

lethe had thought she'd been doing pretty well, but apparently not.
the protagonist stumbled when her swing stopped connecting with anything at all, stunned before she looked around to see that she wasn't standing where she'd thought she was. the moment she lifted her eyes, she saw richard standing where she had been, surrounded by an overwhelming amount of wolves. her heart stopped for a moment, but ... none of them attacked. all of the smaller wolves, two of them even nearly as big as scar was, were stilled. it didn't seem like the kind of thing that would last.
all the same, it meant her priorities immediately shifted when she noticed a scar rounding back right towards the antagonist, unafflicted with the charm. without any hesitation at all, she fearlessly rushed forward to try to drive the point home, bashing against scar with both sword and shield. she would keep him away. she would keep all of them from hurting noir, and nothing would happen to her for it because that was just how these battles went when heroes were involved.

From wolves to puppies, the creatures all fell to the ground with some inching towards his feet. Their tongues lolling out, licking at his shoe. Richard frowned at the act, stomping his foot on one of the wolve's heads, crushing it. It was then that the same feeling crept up on him. The King of Beasts was back to finish him off. He smiled at the thought, a 'tsk, tsk' eliciting from his curved lips. If Scar wanted him, he had to get through Lethe first.
Right on cue, his hero had swooped in on Scar, swinging her sword to keep the ferocious snapping jaw away from him. He stood right behind her back, brandishing his knife again. The same move that had caused Scar to fall to the hands of Lethe. He knew now that the charm was ineffective, but the fear stuck. At least, it did last time.
"Go for it," he told her in a smooth husk.

just as scar had started to snap back, the monster froze and lethe knew that noir had saved her. she did not waste time, immediately taking advantage by activating another chosen one to boost her attack as soon as the magical element faded, striking out towards the beast with every bit of her strength. this was her chance to give hope to those still alive in the game. she wouldn't fail them.
more importantly, she couldn't fail noir.
she wailed against the creature, doing her best to sink her blade into his heart before the fear status wore off. the protagonist used both her sword and her shield, unafraid of what would happen if scar snapped out of his trance before she could kill him. that wouldn't happen, and she knew this because she was the hero everyone had needed. if she hadn't been, then noir never would have told her otherwise. they were going to win, again, because it was the right thing to do. again.
this was how the story was supposed to go.

A gallant hero taking down a beast in order to rekindle the hopes of all, that was Lethe, that was his Lethe. The Antagonist watched in awe as his Protagonist fought Scar with all her might. In the end, it was her pure sword that sank through the alpha wolf's heart, shattering him. In his place was more loot, but ones that they had already picked up from last time. Above it, a screen congratulating them on unlocking the second floor in an eerie manner like earlier. Distasteful as always.
The room that had no door had manifested one that was more detailed than any door he had encountered. He walked over to it slowly, hands reaching out to push it open. He was curious and wanted to know what laid ahead of them. He wasn't given a chance when his body started to deteriorate into pixels, a white light shining underneath him.
Teleportation?
