Richard noticed the girl match with his steps like a baby duckling. There was something cute about Lethe despite her other flaws. Lethe reminded him of a puppy with her big eyes yearning for something more. The things that she yearned for always changed and if he could, he would always help her gain whatever it is that she wanted. Except for romance as he had learned, usually led to lewd activities. It was sickening and made his stomach wretch just thinking about it.
Certainly not.
Lethe was to remain pure and loving at all times. Anything that threatened to corrupt her were immediately disposed of. He wouldn't have it, absolutely not. His woman was a perfect example of how all women should act. It exhilarated him to know that only he had such a priceless lover and took great pride in it. After all, he had been grooming her carefully over the years. Making sure she turned out just the way he wanted.
And she did.
"Let's walk up there together," Richard suggested, taking the first steps up before turning around to hold out his hand. "Luckily this staircase is fairly wide."

lethe hesitated when he offered her his hand, not because it was unusual to hold hands with him. quite the opposite, she didn't think twice about it and had even lifted her hand before she had paused, but she twisted her hand just so to make sure that the shield across her arm would not brush against or chafe him. the last thing she ever wanted to do was hurt richard. not after he had always looked out for her in his own way.
sure, he wasn't strong - in fact, she had often tried to do her best to protect him physically - but he had always been smarter than her. where he had always seemed to know what to do, she was the one who had always had to cram and study for school just to scrape by for as long as she could remember.
the moment she had figured out the best way to hold his hand, though, she had brightened right back up again as if nothing had happened just moments before, trailing up the steps alongside him. it was probably really smart, making sure they didn't lose their footing or balance this way. when she looked up ahead, it was so bright she had to close her eyes immediately, tripping on a step before she caught herself just as quickly. "it's hard to believe it was so dark back there," she murmured, casting him an apologetic glance in case she had slowed him down.

Richard didn't approve of intimacy at least, nothing too explicit. Holding hands with Lethe was enough for him. The way they intertwined their fingers, sharing the heat of their bodies... it thrilled him deep down. This was proof of their relationship and how strong they were together as two halves joined as one. This was the proper way to bond with someone instead of that disgusting act against God. He grimaced briefly at the thought of defiling his love, clearing his head of it all.
He turned his head upwards towards the light, wincing. He had to hold his hand up in front of him to lighten the burden upon his eyes. Cursed traps. Richard took slow steps when he reached the top of the stairs and beyond the light was another door. This one had no locks, nothing. The boy looked at Lethe with curiosity.
"Do you think we should open it?"
Oh, how he enjoyed feeding into her sense of independence and free thought only to rip it down.

thankfully, he wasn't mad she tripped and nearly dragged him down with her. instead, they just kept moving upwards, and eventually they came to ... another door. before she realized there weren't any harder locks on it, or even any at all, her heart dropped into her stomach. when she realized that there was nothing else in the way and she hadn't led them to a dead end, however, she smiled and nodded. at the very last moment, she remembered the entire reason why she'd wanted to come here in the first place.
they were so close! they'd just have to overcome one big bad monster, and then maybe the players who remained could have hope again.
since he'd brought it up, she reached forward towards the door with her free hand, seeing no reason to hesitate any further. the handle shifted under her grip, opening more easily than she would have imagined for a door so big. it was as if the brilliantly lit door was made of feathers, it was so light. when it opened to reveal the room beyond, her eyes shone, all of the risk lost on her in that moment. "wow!"

Like watching a puppy play with a ball clumsily, Richard's lips curved upwards at Lethe's movements. He stood to the side of her, eyes locked on the girl as she reached for the door. He knew that whatever ensued if it should be something bad, it would only deter the girl from making decisions in the future. He got all of that from just asking her to open a door to a room that may or may not contain another monster. He hummed to himself softly, turning away for a moment.
It would do him some good to finally use the time to equip his weapon. With a quick swipe, he retrieved his cheap knife. Doing a few practice slashes in the air, he nodded to himself. He was now prepared to kill anything that should lay a hand on his woman. He didn't want another repeat of the centipede incident. Richard touched the tip of the knife softly, testing it's point before walking through the room.
He was unwavering with his plans. Anything that dared to take Lethe away from him, would have to answer him with their life.

the high ceiling, the rocky and uneven cavern with ledges and mutliple entrances - it must have been amazing to plan out all of the detail involved. lethe's eyes were wide as she stepped forward, but a howl reminded her why they were there. they were lambs led to the slaughter in the wolf's den, but that was the entire purpose for entering the dungeon, wasn't it? she did not falter, did not even look back to see the barrier come up behind them and seal the way to retreat shut.
she was ready, twirling her beginner sword in a show of bravado.
she could see them, large wolves and small alike growling as they lowered their heads and stalked close every which way she looked. she did not shrink back this time, stepping forward and raising her sword. it shone brightly, drawing all eyes on her and making her the center of attention. she heard a howl that was much louder that echoed through the cavern, but did not see the owner. lethe did not blink; she had expected this.
they were doing the right thing, and that meant they would be okay.
the first of many wolves responded to her skill, and lethe raised her shield just in time to catch a wolf that had leapt from above as they began to swarm her.

richard swung his arm back and forth like a child carrying a beloved plush toy. in hand was his knife and as terribly made as it was, it had proven itself useful before. it was durable and dependable when he needed it. the boy smiled, watching his brave heroine rush in ahead of him, drawing the attention of a pack of mutts. he hummed, eyes drifting away from the scene and over to a much bigger wolf overseeing the situation.
the alpha male, hm?
richard tapped a finger against the handle of his knife, still humming a simple tune to himself. he had exactly two options available. it was between saving lethe and taking his chance at defeating the king of beasts. the antagonist chuckled to himself having decided that perhaps, attacking the latter was a better plan. if all went well, they would be a step closer to leaving the dungeon in one piece.
he walked over to scar, eyes locked with it as if it was intelligent enough to comprehend him. he laughed, holding up the knife for the creature to see. yes, he was going to kill it -- slowly. at least, he had planned to and had gotten cut off by two other smaller wolves. have they strayed from lethe? richard scowled as the two pounced at him.

within moments she was surrounded, barely fending off the lunging teeth from all sides. some found what they were seeking, her health starting to fall, but that was okay because she was keeping him safe. it was only out of the corner of her eye that she saw that she had failed, caught sight of the two wolves that had strayed from attacking her. perhaps they hadn't been able to find room amidst their brethren to lunge at her. she winced as a wolf bit hard into her undefended calf, crying out in pain.
had she made a mistake?
no. that couldn't be. she was the hero of this story, and so she could not die. it was without fear that she activated the ability chosen one, magical energy surrounding both her sword and shield before she began to lash out. she no longer cared about keeping up her defenses to buffer the attentions of the wolves from noir, because that hadn't worked. now, she swung her sword without anything in mind except reaching him in time, with no thought on protecting herself.
she would be okay. she was doing the right thing.

like the beasts that they were, the lunges were telegraphed and hardly surprising. a few swipes of his blade as they flew past him and they were gone. it was like they didn't try to harm him and in the end, it didn't even matter. he stifled his growing laughter when the two that had attacked him had disappeared into fine pixels. it was pathetic and now, their incompetence was going to cost the life of their leader. he advanced without a shred of fear in his eyes and just as he was about to drive the knife into the alpha wolf, a cry rang out.
he turned his attention to the source immediately to shout, "be mindful, fool!" his blood boiled when he caught sight of Lethe struggling. useless. he almost considered turning his back to his prey to offer aid to his prized possession. only, for her to redeem herself by breaking free of the wolves' formation. his expression softened as he talked himself down from his brief rage. he had to remind himself that he needed to be composed if he wanted to secure their future together forever.
the antagonist exhaled sharply, placing his hand over his face to mask the expression. he couldn't let her see him like this. smile, smile, that's good. he forced a soft, thin smile before letting his hand drop to his side. it wasn't unheard of for him to lose his temper and raise his voice at her. he was sure that she knew he did it with good intentions.
he was, however, unaware of the sharpened claws that came right at him.

he was right. he was always, always right. she was being stupid, she always had been, and a fear rose in her chest like flowing ice not from the wolves, but from the touch of anger she thought she heard in his voice. richard had always been there for her, had never left her side, but there was always part of that that hung over her head. he was always there, because no one else was. without him, she would be all alone, and she did not know how to be alone. there was a desperate gnawing every time she thought he might be getting sick of her, just like everyone else must have. after all, if they hadn't gotten sick of her, if she hadn't done something wrong, they never would have left her alone.
there was a way that, over time, being isolated from all but one person warped you down to your core.
she didn't remember who she was outside of desperately trying to keep him from leaving her. then again, she had been so young when they met, she wasn't sure if there was anyone she had used to be before she met him. she didn't want to find out.
and so, she only started fighting harder when she sensed his anger, breaking through the wolves. only a few of them remained, panting and weakened; they would not last much longer. when she saw him standing before scar, the much larger wolf. she heard a scream, not realizing it was her own, and broke from the combat she was in with the remaining wolves to lunge right towards the greatest of the beasts. there was no time, no time -
the best she could do was dive in between him and the blow, and pray her beginner's shield held.

he was not a stupid man; he was a careless one. he did not know which was worse out of the two, only knowing that both led to imminent death. the antagonist braced himself for the attack when he had turned around a second too late. his eyes shut tightly as he held an arm in front of him defensively. he had no shield like lethe and his armor was nothing but cheap cloth. was he going to die here?
his smile twisted at the depressive thought, leaving a void within his heart. the last thing he was going to hear was his beloved's screams? he cursed under his breath nearly resigning to his fate as scar lashed out at him for his hubris. it was out of pure luck that his protagonist had somehow made it in the knick of time. the heavy blow, knocking against a shield held by his lovely hero.
excellent.
richard took the opportunity to cast his own ability, striking fear into scar, hoping to immobilize the beast long enough for lethe to strike. he knew from experience that his fear was particularly effective on monsters. he wasn't too sure about one that was twice the size of an average monster and twice as strong. from behind him, he heard a low growl, but ultimately ignored it. it was most likely the wounded dogs that lethe had left behind with little to no energy to attack.
"now's your chance, lethe! i don't think i can kill him. i can only count on you to do it," he encouraged earnestly.

the blow struck, and it resonated through the shield and down her arm. it hurt, left her less certain of the ground she stood on as the snow crunched under the weight in her weak footing. her breathing was haphazard from the rush to reach her friend in time, her heartbeat skipping as it hammered in her chest, but no damage came to her healthbar. not yet.
she heard the growls behind her, but she couldn't take wide eyes off of scar as the beast breathed out a growl, his breath washing over her. if noir was not there to remind her who she was, she might have faltered. but he was there, still, because she had saved him. this only proved him further right, reminding her that she didn't remember a time when he had been wrong. even in the early days, when she had questioned him, she had always just misheard or accidentally twisted the truth. she would never doubt him again.
only she could do this, any of this. all of it fell to her shoulders.
there was no choice to turn back, or leave it to anyone else, or ask for help.
lethe cried out in anger as scar began to crouch down, unaware that he was preparing for a lunge even as she struck forward with a sword blazing with blue light. even unaided, she was enough to fell this great monster. she was, after all, the protagonist.

had he fallen in love with her all over again? he certainly did. there she was in all her glory, asserting her role upon this lowly creature. even if he was leader of the wolf pack, before her, he was nothing. nothing but shattered pixels that scattered away into the light without so much as a trace. his smile widened until it spread from ear to ear, his eyes shining brightly at the sight. he couldn't hold back his happiness, clapping slowly at the calculated execution.
as rough as that battle had gone, he was proud of his woman. she showed him that she was everything he could ever want. it was only a matter of time before he could call her true immaculate perfection. only in time would he find out and unlock her full potential. for now, he supposed he could settle with the disgusting amount of loot left for them.
